4 Welcome Hello and welcome to Castleford Academy. The Resource Base is a Wakefield Council (SENSS) provision that caters for pupils with the most significant hearing impairment. Our Ethos: To ensure every Deaf/Hearing Impaired (DHI) child reaches their full social and academic potential. Our Philosophy: We recognise and celebrate the potential of our DHI sign bilingual children. We hold a strong commitment to providing a child centred approach to learning. Our aim is to ensure that our pupils are fully included in academy life, educationally, socially and emotionally thus ensuring they leave secondary education as confident and independent learners and young adults. We are privileged by having professional and highly skilled staff who are hardworking and dedicated to the education of our pupils and support them to reach their full potential. We believe that our Resource is a calm and happy environment happy where pupils can aspire and succeed as independent learners. Where appropriate, all pupils follow the National Secondary Curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to take part in all aspects of school life, including participation in mainstream lessons and extracurricular activities. Qualified Teachers of the Deaf, teach within the Resource Base through an appropriate mode of communication to consolidate and reinforce learning. We hope your child will be happy at Castleford Academy, and that you as parents and carers will become fully involved in your child s education and the life of the school generally. The partnership between home and school is a vital one and mutual support is imperative. At this Resource, we value and encourage your participation and support. I hope you will find this prospectus useful in giving you an overview of the Resource base for the DHI young people as well as providing you with practical information. 5 Supporting Children s Success All children access a curriculum that reflects their individual needs. Resource lessons Lessons in Resource are one hour long and are delivered through British Sign Language, Sign Supported English and/or speech. The lessons are taught in a visual style to meet the needs of a deaf learner. There are pre and post teaching of main concepts and vocabulary for core subjects, target language sessions and BSL level 1, 2 and 3 classes. Lessons are taught in small groups or on a 1:1 basis depending on the lesson and the needs of the pupil. Mainstream lessons Children access mainstream lessons with support as needed from a Teacher of the Deaf, Specialist Support Workers, and/or a Deaf Instructor. 6 Supporting Children s Success Professionals involved QTOD Qualified Teacher of the Deaf A Teacher of the Deaf is a qualified teacher with the skills and knowledge required to provide quality teaching to mainstream learners, with the additional mandatory qualifications and expertise in teaching deaf learners. They teach, assess and monitor pupils on a one to one basis or in small groups to ensure they are achieving their maximum potential. DI Deaf Instructor Deaf Instructor Our Deaf Instructors are skilled native BSL first language users that offer holistic support and act as positive Deaf role models for our pupils. Part of their role involves supporting both staff and pupils in their development of British Sign Language. Using their own backgrounds and experiences, they help our pupils cope with any social and emotional issues; developing their awareness or sense of: Identity Being deaf in a hearing world Community Important life skills 5

7 Other Information SLSO Specialist Learning Support Officer We have a group of communication professionals that work with pupils in the mainstream setting to ensure they receive full access to the curriculum. All of our students have individual communication needs. Where some will require full (BSL) support, others will use Sign Supported English (SSE) while some will prefer a more oral approach or somebody to take notes of the lesson. Our team encourage communication amongst peers, especially when participating in group work. All of our staff have been trained in the use of BSL up to Level 3 and work closely with the Deaf Instructors to develop their skills.
