2 Audiology Externship PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) offers a one-year Audiology Externship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. This program provides in-depth clinical knowledge and skills that enable practitioners to provide quality comprehensive audiology care. Education will focus on patient care, providing state-of-the-art clinical audiology services to patients of all ages. 3 FACILITIES The Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester comprises an extensive outpatient complex, two hospitals, and research and education facilities. It is among the largest, most advanced medical centers in the world. Mayo Clinic s Division of Audiology employs 21 audiologists and four technicians. Audiology care providers see patients of all ages who suffer from hearing and balance problems. Audiology is a part of the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) practice. Each year audiologists at Mayo perform more than 35,000 procedures and tests. GRADUATION AND CERTIFICATION Upon successful completion of the Audiology Externship, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Mayo School of Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. HOURS For the majority of the externship, you will be in the clinic setting Monday through Friday, and rotate occasional weekends for universal newborn hearing screening. CLASS SIZE Each year, Mayo School of Health Sciences admits one student to its Audiology Externship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. This ensures that you will receive a comprehensive educational experience with close one-on-one instruction. Curriculum CLINICAL The Audiology Externship consists of comprehensive clinical training to ensure that the program meets your training goals. During this training, you will have the opportunity to rotate through all of the division s clinical areas, including: Diagnostics Cochlear implants Vestibular/balance Hearing aid program Universal newborn hearing screening You will gain experience in the many facets of an active audiology practice. Close and positive relationships with otolaryngologists offer a unique learning environment. 2

4 As an extern at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, you will be required to complete four projects directed by each of the Ph.D. audiology staff. PRACTICE MANAGEMENT During this time, you will acquire a thorough understanding of departmental philosophy and mission, and skills to identify and solve practice problems using policy development. You will learn the elements of performance improvement and participate in the process through departmental initiatives especially as they relate to patient safety. DIDACTIC You will have the opportunity to participate in a monthly teleconference with audiologists from Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville as research and clinical cases are presented. In addition, a monthly in-house clinical issues conference allows further education and integration. You will also attend monthly division meetings to discuss current issues relating to the Rochester audiology practice. GRADING OR EVALUATION Mayo School of Health Sciences uses evaluative tools that include: Written examination Demonstration of skills Self-assessment exercises Faculty reviews Our system of evaluation provides students and faculty with a comprehensive look at individual performance, allowing students who are experiencing academic difficulty to be directed to appropriate support resources, including tutoring programs and counseling opportunities. Faculty TEACHING FACULTY The Audiology Externship Program draws its faculty from Mayo Clinic s clinical, scientific and technical staffs. Mayo School of Health Sciences faculty members are chosen for their commitment to teaching as well as clinical practice and/or research. Many have published and lectured extensively and are highly regarded in their field. They bring a vast amount of knowledge and experience to share with you. 3

5 The Division of Audiology current staff includes four Ph.D.s, three Au.D.s and 14 master s-level audiologists. You will have direct access to these individuals throughout your training. This allows you the opportunity to learn from some of today s best practitioners in audiology. VISITING PROFESSORS/LECTURERS A hallmark of higher education excellence is the breadth and depth of information and experience provided students by the faculty and visiting experts. Many prominent professors visit Mayo Clinic to lecture on their areas of medical and scientific expertise each year. As a student of Mayo School of Health Sciences, you are encouraged to attend all conferences, lectures and seminars prepared for students, residents, fellows and consulting staff. Admissions PREREQUISITES To be eligible to apply for the Audiology Externship Program, applicants must be enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Audiology program. Candidates must have completed the didactic portion of the degree prior to being admitted to the externship. In addition, you must obtain a Minnesota provisional audiology license. POLICIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following Mayo School of Health Sciences policies affect applications and admissions to its programs: English fluency Fluency in written and spoken English is essential to succeed in the program and to ensure patient safety. If English is a second language, you must be able to demonstrate fluency. Satisfactory performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language examination or the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency must be documented as proof of fluency. Your test results must be less than two years old. Immunization record For the protection of patients, students and employees, and in compliance with state regulations, Mayo Clinic requires students to be properly immunized. You must show proof of the following immunizations before you begin a program at Mayo School of Health Sciences: Tuberculin test in the past six months Varicella, rubella and rubeola immunity 4

6 Up-to-date diphtheria and tetanus shots Hepatitis B vaccination or signed declaration Documentation of vaccinations must be provided to Mayo Employee Health Service prior to the start of class. Health status Prospective students will undergo a physical examination or nurse s review at Mayo Clinic and will have the opportunity to update or receive the required tests and immunizations cited above. More information about the physical exam will be provided after you have been offered a program appointment. Acceptance to the program is dependent upon successful completion of the physical examination. Medical insurance Students must have medical insurance coverage during their program. Evidence of medical coverage must be provided when your educational program begins. Background check Prospective students must pass a criminal background check and/or drug screening required by state laws, prior to enrollment to Mayo School of Health Sciences. Student responsibilities Mayo School of Health Sciences students are expected to attend all scheduled classes, examinations and assigned clinical rotations unless absence is approved. Students are required to exhibit professional and ethical conduct at all times. TECHNICAL STANDARDS Mayo School of Health Sciences accepts students who are highly qualified for its programs. To be considered for admittance you should exhibit strong qualifications for the health profession you wish to pursue. Applicants to programs must possess the following general qualities: Critical thinking skills Sound judgment Emotional stability and maturity Empathy for others Physical and mental stamina Ability to learn and function in a variety of settings 5

7 You must be able to perform the essential functions of the profession and meet the standards of the curriculum. Students seeking exceptions to these standards or reasonable accommodations should initiate their request with the program s director. Application Process POSITIONS One candidate is selected each year for the Audiology Externship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester on a competitive basis. The program runs from July 1 to June 30 annually. APPLY To apply to the program, please submit: 1. A completed Mayo School of Health Sciences application form. 2. An official transcript of all college and/or university credits. 3. Three letters of recommendation (at least two from health professionals). 4. A statement of your professional goals. 5. Results from college entrance examinations, such as the American College Test (ACT), are desirable. Your application and all supporting documentation must be received by Mayo School of Health Sciences by February 1 of the year you wish to begin the externship. Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to Mayo Clinic in Rochester for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty. Appointment letters are mailed at the end of March. If you receive an appointment letter, your reply is expected within 10 days. Your appointment to the program is dependent upon successful completion of the physical examination and background check. 8 Tuition & Financial Aid PROGRAM COSTS AND STIPEND There is no tuition for the Audiology Externship Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Externs receive a stipend of $20,000 during the twelve months of the program. Please contact the program director for more information about the stipend. You are responsible for providing your living accommodations and transportation. You may hold outside employment during the program, if it does not conflict with your program responsibilities. FINANCIAL AID Mayo School of Health Sciences offers financial incentives for students to participate in some of its health sciences training programs. For other programs, scholarships, grants and low-interest loans may be available for those who demonstrate financial need. Audiology Career Overview FIELD DESCRIPTION Audiology is the science of hearing and the study of hearing loss. It encompasses aspects such as acoustics, noise pollution, diseases and defects of the ear, and the effect of hearing loss on the child s development of speech and language. Audiologists are professionals educated in the study of hearing, hearing loss, and rehabilitation of the hearing impaired. The audiologist s day-to-day work involves the prevention, detection, measurement and rehabilitation of hearing loss in children and adults. When an individual is referred for audiological assessment, the audiologist must determine the severity and type of hearing loss present. Hearing loss is measured with sophisticated electroacoustic equipment using tests specially selected to match the needs, capabilities and age of the patient. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Employment of audiologists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year Because hearing loss is strongly associated with aging, rapid growth in the population age 55 and over will cause the number of persons with hearing impairment to increase markedly. 7

9 In addition, baby boomers are now entering middle age, when the possibility of neurological disorders and associated speech, language and hearing impairments increases. Medical advances are also improving the survival rate of premature infants and trauma and stroke victims, who then need assessment and possible treatment. EARNING POTENTIAL According the U.S. Department of Labor, median annual earnings of audiologists is $44,830. Salaries range from $30,850 to $68,570, with the majority falling between $37,000 and $55,290.
