At HearUSA, our skilled providers, world-class clinical practices and state-of-the-art technology enables us to offer you the very best in both hearing services and hearing aids. We believe our standard of hearing care is unparalleled and we take pride in being the nation s first hearing care network accredited by URAC, an independent, non-profit health care accrediting organization dedicated to promoting healthcare quality through accreditation, certification and commendation. In this guide, you will find valuable information about hearing, how hearing loss affects quality of life, how hearing aids can help, and what you can expect from your hearing care provider. The Lifestyle & Technology Guide will help you choose the right hearing aids to meet your needs, if you are a hearing aid candidate. Today s technologically advanced hearing aids are capable of dramatically improving the quality of life for millions of people who are suffering from the effects of untreated hearing loss. You will find that HearUSA offers five levels of technology in hearing aids. There is one price for each technology level, regardless of the model or style of hearing aid you choose. 4 The Invisible Handicap Hearing loss is called the invisible handicap because there are no outward signs of a handicap or limitations. The loss is almost always gradual, usually occurring over a period of years, and there is rarely any pain. Steps need to be taken to keep you connected and avoid a breakdown in communication. Our hearing is a vital link to our world; it connects us to our friends, our families and to the world beyond. Loss of hearing is life altering and it can be devastating often leading to depression, withdrawal, anxiety, and even confusion and short term memory loss. The good news: properly fitted hearing aids can reverse or prevent those consequences. What you don t hear can hurt you Of all the reasons millions of Americans living with untreated hearing loss should use hearing aids, safety is at the top of the list. Studies have linked hearing loss to reduced alertness and increased risk to personal safety. Warning sounds, if not heard, can result in injury: The siren of an emergency vehicle An alert from a car passenger An approaching vehicle when crossing the street or parking lot The phone ringing or the inability to communicate by phone in an emergency A child crying out in pain or distress The home smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector Machinery or warning signals Loss of hearing is a serious life issue, a medical condition that is associated with physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Depression, anxiety, emotional instability, phobias, withdrawal, isolation, lessened health status and lessened self esteem have all been linked to uncorrected hearing loss. 5 Understanding Hearing Aids What are hearing aids? Hearing aids are small electronic devices that you wear in or behind your ears. They make some sounds louder so that you can listen, communicate, and participate more fully in daily activities. If you have hearing loss, hearing aids can help you hear more clearly in both quiet and noisy situations. Hearing aids receive sound through a microphone, which converts the sound waves to electrical signals and sends them to an amplifier. The amplifier increases the power of the signals and then sends them to the ear through a speaker. Advanced technology has additional functionality to address difficult situations, such as background noise or feedback. Miniature computerization provides more features and better signal processing. Today s hearing aids are smaller, smarter and more effective than ever. Connect wirelessly to your Bluetooth-enabled device or discreetly adjust your settings using your smartphone. How can hearing aids help? Hearing aids are very useful in improving the hearing and speech understanding of people who have hearing loss. Damage to the ear and hearing can occur as a result of disease, aging, injury and noise or certain medicines. Hearing aids magnify sound vibrations entering the ear. Surviving nerve cells detect larger vibrations and convert them into neural signals that are passed along to the brain. The greater the damage to the nerve cells, the more severe the hearing loss, and the greater the hearing aid amplification needed. However, there are practical limits to the amount of amplification a hearing aid can provide. In addition, if the inner ear is too damaged, even large vibrations will not be converted into neural signals. Sometimes assistive products with hearing aids can offer a solution. If you have hearing loss, hearing aids can help you hear more clearly in both quiet and noisy situations. Call HearUSA Toll Free:

6 Understanding Hearing Aids You may benefit from hearing aids if: Your hearing frustrates you when you converse with family or friends. Your spouse tells you he or she often has to repeat what was said. Your hearing problem causes embarrassment. You have difficulty hearing the TV or radio at a normal volume level. Your hearing causes you to have arguments with family members. You feel that hearing difficulties hinder your social life. You attend religious services or group activities less than often because of your hearing. It is difficult for you to understand when someone speaks to you in a whisper. Your hearing creates difficulties when you visit a restaurant with friends or family. aarphearingcare.com

7 What to Expect at Your First Appointment You will meet a hearing healthcare provider who will conduct the following: Physical examination of your ears Complete hearing evaluation and detailed case history Interview to discuss hearing needs and review situations where you may experience hearing difficulties. If you need hearing aids, your hearing healthcare provider will recommend hearing aid choices, taking into account: Your hearing test results Your lifestyle Your style and technology preferences Your budget ask us about financing programs New method for testing hearing effort measures ongoing electroencephalographic activity of the brain Damage to the ear and hearing can occur as a result of disease, aging, injury and noise or certain medicines. 8 Two Ears are Better than One It is called binaural listening: bi, for two: and aural, for ears. The human hearing mechanism is an advanced stereophonic wonder. With all of its amazing accuracy and versatility, it provides the listener with space perception, depth perception and balance. Give your brain what it needs for auditory intelligence. The sound signals travel from each ear to the brain via complicated pathways. Some cross over and eventually stimulate the opposite side of the brain. Others stimulate the same side. These complex patterns of stimulation make up auditory intelligence. Binaural hearing instruments help the ears get the messages to both sides of the brain, thus increasing your auditory intelligence. Stereo listening gives depth perception. Anyone who has enjoyed music in stereo, compared to mono, knows the difference. Mono makes all sounds be delivered by both ears, which is also important for safety and determining the direction in which the sound is coming. Less power is needed when two hearing instruments are worn. When your ears work together, lower volume settings are required for comfortable hearing. You will experience greater efficiency and clarity with two hearing instruments as compared to monaural listening. The benefits are that loud sounds are more comfortable and listening is less stressful. Two ears hear better in noise. Whenever several people are talking at the same time, such as in a restaurant, it becomes more difficult to understand the person close to you. Voice discrimination in noise may be difficult with two ears and becomes impossible with only one. Binaural hearing instruments give the best advantage to hearing clearly and comfortably in noise. Quality of sound is better quality of life. The majority of hearing instrument users who have worn both binaural and monaural hearing instruments report a significant improvement in sound quality with two hearing aids. 10 Hearing Aid Styles Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) This is the smallest custom-made hearing instrument. The shell is designed to fit discretely inside your ear canal. These devices may be limited in the number of programs and options. Suitable for Mild to Moderate Hearing Loss In-the-Canal (ITC) This hearing instrument is custom-made to fit your ear. It is slightly larger than the CIC and may provide access to multiple listening programs. ITC instruments may be a little easier for some people to manipulate than CICs, though they are still small. Suitable for Mild to Severe Hearing Loss In-the-Ear (ITE) This style is custom-made and fills your entire outer ear. A full shell ITE provides access to telecoil and multiple listening programs. Larger batteries and controls make this model easy to handle. Suitable for Mild to Severe Hearing Loss Open-Fit Behind the Ear (BTE) The microphone and tubing of this type of hearing instrument are hidden in the ear s natural contours, so the instrument is virtually invisible in the ear. Multi-venting allows air to travel freely in and out of the ear, ensuring an open, comfortable fit that makes your voice sound as natural as possible. Suitable for Mild to Moderate Hearing Loss Behind-the-Ear (BTE) This style fits behind your ear and comes in a variety of sizes and colors. It is attached to a slim tube or an earmold that is custom-made for your ear. Suitable for Mild to Profound Hearing Loss aarphearingcare.com

13 Hearing Aid Technology Hearing Aid Features Bluetooth Compatibility allows hands-free use of compatible wireless devices like cell phones. You connect directly and hear more clearly and comfortably with no wires. Use your smartphone as a remote control! Directional Microphones are more sensitive to sound approaching from one direction, such as the front, while minimizing unwanted sounds from other directions. This feature is helpful for conversing in noisy situations, like restaurants. Feedback Suppression reduces feedback (that annoying whistling sound). Noise Reduction automatically alters the response of the hearing aid in noisy situations and is most useful with steady noise, such as fans, motors, etc. Programs are different settings within the hearing aid for different situations, such as quiet places, noisy places and telephone use. Advanced hearing aids have memories that are automatic or in a combination of both manual and automatic. This allows the user to select particular listening preferences, depending on the situation. Remote control is an optional accessory with some hearing aids that allow the wearer to discreetly make adjustments. It is also convenient for those with dexterity issues. Speech Enhancement technology allows hearing aids to detect certain speech sounds and provide extra amplification to those sounds. This makes speech clearer and easier to understand. Telecoil amplifies sound from the telephone or loop amplification system without picking up background noise, which helps prevent feedback. This results in better hearing on the phone. Today s hearing aids are smaller, smarter and more comfortable than ever before. Explore the new options that digital technology offers and discover how you can live better, with better hearing.
