2 Classroom Procedure: Approximate Grade Level: Pair students. (Students should be seated during this exercise.) Tell both students to close their eyes. Instruct students to tell each other their favorite color, number, etc., without talking to their partner. 2. Give students about five minutes to brainstorm ideas to communicate with their partner. The room should be completely silent. 3. After five minutes, ask students to discuss the experience. Why was it difficult? What would it be like if they were deaf and blind and were unable to talk? How would they communicate? 4. Allow for responses and discussion. Introduce Helen Keller. 5. Distribute Helen Keller content pages. Read and review the information with the students. Save the final question for lesson closing. Use the additional resources to enhance understanding. 6. Distribute Activity page. Read and review the instructions. You may need to review how to make a time line. Distribute supplies for the timeline which could be as basic as paper and colored pencils, or use computer images or other kinds of paper, and materials. 7. Distribute Practice page. Check and review the students responses. (Practice page may be completed orally together as a class.) 8. Distribute the Homework page. The next day, students share the responses from family member(s) related to the quotes. Ask students if they learned anything from the Helen Keller quotes. 9. In closing, ask: Helen Keller inspired many people during her life. Is there someone in your life who inspires you today? 10. Allow for responses and discussion. Ask students to explain why the and how the person inspires them. What has the person done to help them in life? Objectives: The students will be able to identify Helen Keller and explain her significance in history. Common Core State Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.7 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.3 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.7 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.3 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.4.3 CSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.5.3 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.2 Class Sessions (45 minutes): At least 2 class sessions. Teaching Materials/Worksheets: Helen Keller content pages (2), Activity page, Practice page, Homework page Student Supplies: Colored pencils, construction paper or other paper for the time line, ruler, handouts Prepare Ahead of Time: Supplies for activity. Copy handouts. Options for Lesson: Students may work in pairs for the activity. Activity time line can be adapted to the grade level using the lesson. Use additional activities in the resources to enhance the lesson. Blindfold students for one class period giving them an experience of Helen Keller, along with not speaking. Students write a two-person act showing the training Anne Sullivan did with Helen Keller. Invite a blind person to speak to the students about his or her blindness (or another person with a disability). Students write an essay about a person who has inspired them. 2
3 Teacher Notes The lesson introduces students to Helen Keller and the significance of her life. The lesson may be used to inspire children to overcome obstacles in their own life, and to reach for their goals. The lesson could also be used along with a class discussion related to disabilities, physical or otherwise. Though the focus of the lesson is for younger children, it can easily be used for all grades one through six. 4 Who is Helen Keller? Nearly everyone has five senses: hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and touching. You use your senses throughout the day without ever having to think about them. However, what do you think it would be like to lose two of your senses? Most likely if would be very difficult to live a normal life, but not impossible. One person, though, who became an inspiration to millions, lost her hearing and site when she was just 19 months old. Helen Keller was born in Alabama on June 27, 1880 and was born with full sight and hearing. However, 19 months later she came down with a serious fever, which back then was called brain fever. Today it may be known as scarlet fever or meningitis. It caused the little girl to lose her sight and hearing. She became blind and deaf. In addition, Helen had never learned how to speak. As a young child, she had trouble communicating with others and would become angry and frustrated. She would use special motions to show what she wanted from her mom and dad. When she was not understood, she would sometimes throw tantrums, and kick and hit other people because she was so mad. Helen s parents, Arthur and Kate Keller realized she needed special help. They contacted a special place, called an institute, in Boston that helped blind people. The head of the institute suggested a person to help Helen. This person was Anne Sullivan, who later became known as a miracle worker for how much she did for Helen. Anne Sullivan was once blind herself but her sight came back after she had surgery. She understood through her own experience, she would be able to help Helen live a normal life. So, on March 3, 1887, when Anne was almost 7-years old, Anne became Helen s helper for the next 50 years. Learning Begins The first thing Anne taught Helen were words. She would use Helen s sense of touch to help her learn words. For example, she might place a doll in Helen s hand, and in the other hand she would spell out the word doll, tracing one letter at a time, d-o-l-l. Helen would then repeat the tracing movement in Anne s hand. For you, this would be the same as a person saying and spelling a new word for you, and then you saying and spelling it back to them. Helen was only able to use her sense of touch to learn words. 4
5 Next, Helen learned how to read using a special reading system for the blind called Braille. Braille is a system that uses letters made from little bumps on a page in a book or on a sign. (Your school may use Braille underneath room numbers or other places.) With Anne s help, Helen learned how to read entire books written in Braille. By the age of ten, even though she was still blind and deaf, Helen was able to read and use a typewriter. Finally, though Helen never learned how to talk, but she wanted to start talking. Another teacher, Sarah Fuller, used the vibrations of words on her own lips to teach Helen how to talk. Helen learned how to feel sound vibrations and how the lips moved to make her own sounds. She started off slowly with simple letters and words, but then advanced to longer words and full sentences. Because Helen had advanced in her learning, at age 16 she attended Radcliffe College for women in Massachusetts. Anne Sullivan attended with her and helped her listen and hear the lectures by signing the words into Helen s hands. In 1904 Helen Keller became a college graduate, with honors. Helen Inspires Others Once Helen learned how to communicate and read using Braille, sign language, and speaking, she was on her way to becoming an inspiration for people throughout the world. During college, Helen wrote about her experiences of being deaf and blind. Her stories were published in several magazines, and then the articles were turned into a couple of books. Many people became interested in Helen Keller s life. When Helen became older she wanted to help other people who were like her, giving them inspiration and hope. She began to travel the country after joining the American Foundation for the Blind. She gave speeches and raised money for the foundation which would be used to help other people who were blind. During Helen s life, World War II was taking place as well and Helen visited wounded army soldiers and encouraged them to never give up. Throughout much Helen Keller s life, she was a hard worker for those with disabilities, especially those who were deaf or the blind. She helped organizations raise money, but more importantly, she brought an awareness for people who had disabilities. Helen met many presidents including Grover Cleveland, Lyndon Johnson and every president in between. Helen also became friends with Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer, and Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. Also, in honor of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she wrote a book titled Teacher about her helper s life. Finally, one of the most famous and inspiring movies about Helen Keller is titled The Miracle Worker, which was released in In 1968, about a month before her 88 th birthday, Helen Keller died in her sleep. Helen Keller inspired many people during her life. Is there someone in your life who inspires you today? 5
