Technology Design 3 Introduction The purpose of this reflection essay is to describe the multimedia project created as part of task 3 in TDT1 as well as the audience that this project is intended for. This paper will also include a description of the software used to create the multimedia project, which is Windows Movie Maker, and the rationale for using this program. Included at the end of this paper will be a description of the conceptual framework along with an image included in the appendix located at the end of this paper. Once this paper has been graded and passed, it will be changed from rich text format (RTF) to portable document format (PDF) so it can be added as a link to the website. Audience for the Multimedia Project The audience for this multimedia project consists of educators for both the hearing and the deaf culture who help construct curriculum for the core academic subjects. These teachers have special training in deaf education and are working with general education teachers to help mainstream deaf students into the general education classroom. Many general education teachers are unsure of what strategies to use to make their classroom inclusive for the deaf student. With the implementation of technology into the mainstream classroom, it has become much easier to integrate deaf children into a classroom with hearing children. The specialists will provide training on the advantages and the disadvantages of inclusion into a mainstream classroom. The population consists primarily of the Caucasian race, but there is an equal combination of Hispanics/Latinos, African/American, and Oriental cultures in the educational field. The average age for educators in the non-classroom environment begin in the early to mid-
Technology Design 4 thirties thru the mid to late fifties and beyond. They all have a master s degree in an educational field with some receiving a specialist or even a doctor s degree. These educators, primarily, help to establish academic guidelines and curriculum for their various school districts. Many educators have no knowledge on how to educate a deaf student since they have not had the opportunity to participate in any field work in deaf education. This lack of field experience leaves them at a disadvantage when developing curriculum for the deaf and hearing-impaired student. These educators have many skills that can help to implement the desired instruction for students with disabilities, especially for the deaf student. They have the knowledge to set up technology-based instruction that can benefit the deaf student. Purpose of Multimedia Project The project was created to show educators that deaf children are not any different than hearing children, except for the fact they cannot hear. Given the opportunity to learn in a familiar environment, deaf children can excel academically just like their hearing counterpart. The deaf student desires to learn about technology and to become proficient with all aspects of the internet and the equipment that one uses. The objective is to teach and train mainstream educators on how to use technology in their classroom, and how to include a deaf or hearing-impaired student into the mainstream classroom during academic instruction; therefore, given the appropriate technological tools, mainstream educators will be able to integrate technology into their daily lesson plans while differentiating instruction to include the deaf and hearing-impaired student in the mainstream classroom with 100% inclusion.
Technology Design 5 Software Chosen to Create Multimedia Project Windows Movie Maker was chosen as the software that was to be used in this multimedia project because of this author s familiarity with the software program. This newer version of Movie Maker encompasses the video, audio, and the narration aspects needed to create this project. The possibility of using a photo or graphic image to create a multimedia project was phenomenal in the fact that it made the movie seem like it had been videotaped in the order that it all appears. Windows Movie Maker is not only limited to the use of pictures. Videos can also be included and edited to fit the portion that is relevant to the movie that is being created. A webcam can also be used if one wishes to create a video directly onto the computer. If one desires to use a video camera, the movie created on the video camera can be uploaded into Windows Movie Maker and then adjusted to fit the style of movie that is to be created. Music as well as narration can be included on separate tracks. I like Windows Movie Maker because all the tracks that are needed to create a movie are included in this software and other software programs, like Audacity, are not necessarily needed. Rationale for Choice Windows Movie Maker was the software of choice because it has all of the elements needed to complete the multimedia project. The director of this multimedia project was able to utilize all aspects of the software to create a semi-professional movie project. Windows Movie Maker permits the user to capture a picture or video via a webcam or to upload these different media files from the computer. It offers various types of animations and visual effects that can be applied between frames.
Technology Design 6 Windows Movie Maker does not require more than one person to operate. That makes it a very sought after program which is also quite inexpensive. This author downloaded it onto the laptop that was used for free. There is also a 30 day trial program if one wishes to upgrade to more MB. Process Followed to Create the Multimedia Project Windows Movie Maker is a very easy program to use and it does not require any prior video training or experience. The first step consists of opening Windows Movie Maker and clicking on new project. Next, click on click here to browse for videos and photos section of the web page. The picture and video files open and then you can choose the pictures and/or video and add to the storyboard. Once all pictures and/or videos have been uploaded, you can then start the editing process. Animations can be placed between frames as well as visual effects. Once these have been added, you can begin searching for music by clicking on the add music button. When you click on this button there are several choices that are displayed. You can choose music from the Free Music Archive, Vimeo, or even from your own music files on your computer. Once you have chosen the music that you wish to use, listen to see how loud or soft the music might be and adjust accordingly. The music can be adjusted to fade in or fade out and it can be slow, medium, fast, or none as far as speed. Now you are ready to record a narration track if you wish to share information that has been displayed through the visuals that has been chosen. A record button will pop up. Press the button and begin the recording. Again, listen to the narration when you have finished and adjust the volume accordingly. Once you have finished recording, a preview screen will open where
Technology Design 7 you can preview your video before saving. If you like the finished product, then you can click save video. To make it easier to locate after it has been saved, it is best to save under the video file with a specified name (e.g. tdt1 task 3). The video will open from this saved location and is ready for viewing. Just press play and you can then begin watching your video. All editing can be completed before you create your final copy in the storyboard section. If you should be presenting this movie clip in person, it is possible to pause the clip if one desires to expound a little more on a particular slide. One you have completely finished your movie, you can go to file, and click on publish movie and several different options are available (e.g. one drive, facebook, youtube, vimeo, etc.). since the video is saved under the video file on the computer it is always available for upload.
Technology Design 8 How the Conceptual Framework Helped in the Design Process The conceptual framework created for this project was in the form of a storyboard. The storyboard used to create the project is included in the Appendix. The storyboard was a vast support in the creation of this movie project. It helped to organize my thoughts and visuals that would make this movie project a success. I arranged and rearranged the pictures and my narration many times. The storyboard helped to project what the final project was to look like. The storyboard guided the director in establishing a reasonable timeline and also helped the director to stay within the time constraints that were stipulated. The director used the storyboard to rehearse the narration before the final recording. The final version of the storyboard was completed within Windows Movie Maker and is also attached in the Appendix that follows. Each slide was afforded a ten second segment which allocated plenty of time for the slide as well as the narration and all was completed under two minutes including the credits, the director, and the soundtrack slides.
