1 Teacher s notes Level: Aim: advanced/proficiency (C1/C2). to understand and practise using multi-word verbs and idioms in a business context. Timing: approximately 30 minutes. Whenever you ask higher level students what they would like to do more work on, the answer is almost always idioms, and, in particular, multi-word verbs. So what exactly is an idiom and why do they cause so many problems for students? An idiom can be defined as a phrase which has a different meaning from the meaning of its separate components. One of the characteristics of idioms is that you cannot normally change the words, their order, or the grammatical forms in the same way as you can change non-idiomatic expressions. In other words, idioms are fixed expressions. Sometimes the meaning of the idioms can be guessed from the meaning of one of the words, but usually the meaning is completely different, which is why they are so tricky for students. Care needs to be taken when writing idioms, as many of them are only used in informal language. On the other hand, there are other expressions which are literary or old-fashioned and unsuitable for use in everyday language, except perhaps as a joke. Grouping idioms according to topic makes it easier for teachers to relate the exercises to topic-based units in course books. However, it does not necessarily make it easier for students, as the similarity of meaning and context of use may cause them to confuse the idioms. One alternative is to group together idioms and multi-word verbs which make use of the same lexical verb (take, get or come, for example), but here similar forms may cause confusion, such as set up versus set out or set off. Another alternative is to group them by particle (on, or up, or over, for instance). This is possibly the most helpful grouping, as the same particle may add the same element of meaning to a range of lexical verbs: on often adds the meaning of continuity, e.g. carry on, go on, keep on; up often adds the meaning of completion, e.g. use up, shut up, end up. A combination of these two alternatives is used in the Find someone who activities in this resource. Note that some of the questions are quite personal, so make sure your students know polite ways of declining to answer a question, e.g. If you don t mind, I d rather not talk about that. As a follow-up, you can arrange the students in groups and invite them to write dialogues incorporating as many of the multi-word verbs and idioms as they can. This can even be made into a competition, with a prize being awarded to the group which manages to include the highest number. Alternatively, you can ask the learners to make sentences about themselves using the multi-word verbs and idioms. Most people find that if the examples are personal, they are more likely to be remembered, and sometimes you find that more creative members of the class will even incorporate the target language into a connected story for homework Page 1 of 5
