2 Everyday Implications of ANSD: Current Perspectives and Best Practice Seminar Description and Objectives This course includes a discussion of current issues in evaluation, management and educational planning for individuals with ANSD. It will describe the continuum of educational placements and the importance of ongoing diagnostic therapy for management of these children. Case studies will be presented and current medical issues will be addressed. Participants will be able to: Appropriately list an evaluation protocol to diagnose children with ANSD. Describe the spectrum of ANSD. Identify appropriate audiological management of patients with ANSD. Describe the continuum of educational placements available to children diagnosed with ANSD who receive cochlear implant. Explain the importance of on-going diagnostic therapy in the management of children with ANSD. Who should attend? This program is for professionals involved in the care of children, including physicians, psychologists, educators, educational therapists, advocates, speech-language pathologists and audiologists, as well as parents. Continuing Education Credit This program will meet the qualifications for 7 hours of continuing professional development credit for speech-language pathologists and audiologists. 5 Everyday Implications of ANSD: Current Perspectives and Best Practice Speakers and Faculty Linda J. Hood, PhD Professor in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences and Associate Director for Research at the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Received a Master s degree in audiology from Kent State and a PhD in hearing science from the University of Maryland. She completed an NIH Post-doctoral fellowship and was on the faculty of Kresge Hearing Research Laboratory, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans for over 20 years. In addition to research and teaching, Dr Hood has participated in several review and working groups of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicaltion Disorders, is a past president of the American Academy of Audiology, past trustee of the American Academy of Audiology Foundation, and is a current member of Boards of the American Auditory Society and the International Society of Audiology. Joy A. Murdock Kearns, MS, CCC-SLP Associate Director and Speech Language Pathology (SLP) Faculty Partner for Professional Preparation in Cochlear Implants (PPCI). Previous Director of Education & Outreach for the Let Them HEAR Foundation in E. Palo Alto, CA. She has served on three multidisciplinary CI teams. She is an instructor for the Project Aural Impact SLP grant scholars at San Jose State University and was a part-time lecturer at SF State University. Joy worked on the Communicate with your Child Project in cooperation with the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management (NCHAM). Joy has served on two medical mission teams in Bosnia and Nepal. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara and her graduate degree at San Francisco State University. Michael Murray, MD Michael Murray, MD, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University. He attended the University of Minnesota Medical School where he graduated with honors and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor society. Dr. Murray went on to an internship and residency at the University of Oklahoma. After residency, he completed a two-year fellowship in Neurotology and Skull-Base Surgery at the California Ear Institute at Stanford. Dr. Murray sees and treats all ear, nose and throat related conditions. He specializes in ear and skull-based surgeries and is currently the Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Children s Hospital Oakland. Alison Nachman, AuD Pediatric Audiologist at Children s Hospital Oakland for over 10 years. Ali received her Master s degree in audiology from San Francisco State University and AuD from Central Michigan University, where she focused her dissertation on ANSD. She has published in the International Journal of Audiology and has presented on the topic of ANSD in Italy and Holland. She is the co-author of the Pediatric Resource Guide to Infant and Childhood Hearing Loss, a publication utilized in the training of medical residents and pediatricians on hearing loss and the benefits of early intervention.
