Prevent Cavities Interproximal Caries The Progression Toward Cavities Dental caries start long before they can be detected. A cavity is only the terminal stage of a progressive mineral loss provoked in enamel by caries as a silent disease, dependent on the presence of biofilm and sugar exposure 1. The disease progresses silently until the changes provoked in enamel by biofilm-sugar are clinically visible, i.e., a white spot lesion is present. If the disease is not controlled, dental destruction will not be prevented 2. In spite of being one of the most common diseases in the world today, interproximal caries are extremely difficult to detect. Caries in adults mainly occur at interproximal and restoration margins. Furthermore, these lesions remain difficult to treat even when they are detected. 1. Fejerskov O, Nyvad B, Kidd E. A. M. Pathology of dental caries. In: Fejerskov O, Kidd E (ed). Dental caries The disease and its clinical management. 2nd ed. Oxford: Blackwell Munksgaard; 2. Fejerskov O, Thylstrup A. Different concepts of dental caries and their implications. In: Textbook of clinical cariology. 2nd ed. Munksgaard, Copenhagen; chapter 9. *Actual teeth pictured above. 3
The Most Difficult Area To Clean Teeth Contact Area Interproximal Caries occur most often directly below the contact area of the teeth, the most difficult area to clean, where caries-causing bacteria lives. 4
What Is The Origin ProActive Crown? Origin ProActive Dental Crowns & Bridges have caries inhibiting RMGI (resin-modified glass-ionomer) material applied on the areas of the crown that come into contact with the adjacent teeth. Due to the fluoride releasing and recharging feature of RMGI materials, the ProActive Crown has interproximal caries inhibiting capabilities for the adjacent teeth. 5
Caries Inhibition Effect When Adjacent to Fluoride Releasing Materials Microradiographic images (50x) and corresponding mineral profiles of three specimens cut from the same tooth. Mineral profiles were determined at 0.5 and 1.0 mm from the material margin. In the study 1 referenced above, the effectiveness of the fluoride releasing materials (RLC & RLP) to remineralize a tooth s enamel is highlighted with the yellow dashed lines compared to the normal demineralization that occurs uninhibited by the non-fluoridated composite material (ZSG) marked in red. This demonstrates the ability of fluoride infused glass-ionomers to restore layers of protection to prevent tooth decay. Powered by 1. Fluoride release and dentin caries inhibition adjacent to resin-modified glass-ionomer material Darantee Tantbirojn 1 Afshin Falsafi 2 Sumita B. Mitra 2 Ralph Delong 1 William H. 7 Ketac Nano Light-Curing Glass Ionomer Restorative Fluoride uptake in enamel has been known to have a caries preventive effect.* 3M Ketac Nano restorative shows a high fluoride release. Additionally, in vitro tests demonstrate an artificial caries inhibition effect, and the ability to recharge the fluoride release. *CDC MMWR, Recommendations for Using Fluoride to Prevent and Control Dental Caries in the U.S., Aug 2001, Vol 50 No RR-14 Cumulative fluoride release (mg/g) Fluoride Release Ketac Nano vs. Compomer (Dyract) Powered by Days Ketac Nano w/o primer Dyract w/o adhesive Ketac Nano w/primer Dyract w/prime & Bond NT adhesive 7
Choose a ProActive Crown to Fight Cavities Cavity Causing Agents Sugars Bacteria Acid ProActive Cavity Inhibiting Zirconia crown Fluoride-releasing materials are an indispensable tool to lower the risk of caries development. Among the many choices of restorative materials currently available, glass ionomer material is the greatest source of fluoride available to the surrounding tooth structures. Studies have shown that glass ionomers inhibit demineralization of the surrounding tooth structures, and provide protection against recurrent caries under clinical condition for patients with high risk of cavities. This can be attributed to the ability of glass ionomer material to inhibit demineralization and enhance remineralization through release of fluoride to the adjacent tissue and surrounding fluid. 8

Fluoride Release Quantity and Its Interproximal Caries Inhibting Effect * * Cavity Inhibiting Capabilities Ingesting fluoride does not effectively reduce tooth decay; it must be applied topically. Caries penetrate from the surface. With fluoride treatment, a non-cavitated lesion can be remineralized with fluorapatite and have greater resistance to subsequent demineralization than hydroxyapatite (standard tooth structure without fluoride). Even when released in very low concentrations (as low as 0.02 ppm), fluoride is effective as an anti-caries agent. 10 *Please visit for details.
Make a ProActive Decision Now to Improve Your Oral Health for the Next Decade. Fluoride is the only compound recognized by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of dental cavities. The Origin ProActive Crown is the only crown that constantly releases fluoride which restores and protects your teeth. Conclusion The Origin ProActive Crown releases less fluoride than fluoridated toothpaste. Yet, the ProActive Crown, because of it s direct application, is more effective in preventing interproximal cavities and inhibiting of bacterial enzymes. It also restores layers of protection by remineralizing the tooth enamel. 11
