Harrell The late Dr. Jim and Mrs. Isabel Harrell and members of the Harrell family recognize the value their father placed on continuing education for practitioners of dental medicine. To encourage others in the profession to share this lifelong commitment, they have established a continuing education lectureship in his name. Course Description Dr. Roy B. Harrell was a 1916 graduate of Southern Dental School, later known as Emory University School of Dentistry, and was a member of OKU. Dr. Harrell practiced general dentistry in Elkin, North Carolina for 60 years. He believed in the value of continuing education and participated in it throughout his professional career. The Roy B. Harrell Dental Education Symposium is a tribute to his dedication and commitment to excellence in the profession. One hour of the day will be devoted to prescribing practices for controlled substances and chronic pain management and will fulfill the North Carolina General Assembly s requirement. This six hour presentation will be divided into two sections. The morning session provides the nuts and bolts of practical pharmacology useful in the dental office. Using commonly prescribed drugs as a starting point, the presentation explores the control of post-operative dental pain, the antibiotic(s) of choice for oro-facial infections, the antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines for the cardiac and/or orthopedic prosthesis patient, management of patients taking the newer anticoagulants, and potentially harmful drug interactions. The afternoon session will provide a snapshot of marijuana and the issues surrounding its legalization/medicalization. Inevitably, some of these marijuana users will be treated by the dentist or hygienist. What is it? How is it used? Does it have any medicinal use? Are there any drug interactions between marijuana and dental drugs? What are the oral effects of marijuana? Can a dental staff member use marijuana medicinally and still practice? Why are written post-op instructions so important with a person under the influence of marijuana?

3 About the Speaker Dr. Harold L. Crossley, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland Dental School. A native of Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island in He later was awarded the Master of Science (1970) and Doctorate degrees (1972) in Pharmacology. The University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley the D.D.S. degree in The liaison between the classroom and his parttime dental practice produced a practical approach to understanding the pharmacology of drugs used in the dental office. Dr. Crossley has co-authored a number of articles and four books dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology. Other areas of expertise include the pharmacology of street drugs and chemical dependency. He serves on the Maryland State Dental Association s Well- Being Committee, is an active member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and an honorary member of the Thomas B. Hinman Dental Society. He was the recipient of the 2008 Gordon Christensen Lecturer Recognition award presented by the Chicago Dental Society and the recipient of the 2012 Award of Distinction presented by the Academy of Dentistry International for his efforts in Continuing Dental Education. He has been a consultant for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and other law enforcement agencies since Drawing on this unique background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.
