1 Spring 2010 President s Message It is now a year since I wrote my President s message in the Spring 2009 Newsletter. I welcome the re-election of Dr. Roch Lee Kwing Hong, Professor Leung Wai Keung, Dr. John Ling Yu Kong and Professor Edward Lo Chin Man to the Council for another term of 3 years. The composition of the Council remains unchanged for another year and this continuity will help us to fully implement the improvement measures on governance of the College introduced last year. I am glad to report that the Joint Winter Scientific Meeting with the Faculty of Dentistry was a success with over 200 participants. We hope that the fee waiver would encourage more Fellows to participate and contribute to College activities. I would like to thank Prof. Leung Wai Keung, Prof. Urban Hägg and all the speakers for their hard work. As far as scientific meetings are concerned, we are in the process of planning a Spring Scientific Meeting in April as well as a Joint Congress with the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO) in November. The Conjoint Examinations with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) went smoothly and we had 15 trainees who sat the Conjoint examinations and a number of non-local candidates who set the hip examinations of the RCSEd. The Specialty of Community Dentistry held its 1 st intermediate examination in November with Prof. Cynthia Pine from UK as external examiner. We also had 8 higher trainees who recently passed their exit examinations in Orthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Paediatric Dentistry. I would like to congratulate all candidates who passed your examinations and I look forward to your support and participation in College activities

13 Visitation Report Report on Visitation to the School of Stomatology, Peking University HKAM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Minister of Health in Mainland China in April 2006 to facilitate the development of a specialist registration system in Mainland China. Stomatology has been chosen as one of the four pilot specialties, the others being ophthalmology, paediatrics and orthopaedics. The School of Stomatology, Peking University was chosen as the pilot training centre for our specialty. The first visitation to the School of Stomatology, Peking University was conducted in October 2007 and the lists of grand-father specialists for Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics were confirmed. Subsequently, a second visitation was conducted on 17 April 2009 to review the progress of training. The two representatives of our College were Dr John Ling and Dr KH Lee. It was noted that three other sub-specialties were established, namely Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics. The training programs for the five sub-specialties were reviewed as well as the physical facilities in the hospital. Useful exchanges were conducted and the problems facing the specialist training in the three new sub-specialties were presented by the School of Stomatology. The Vice-Minister of Health, Professor Huang Jie-fu and his team visited Hong Kong and met with representatives of the four Colleges involved on 24 June At the meeting, reports of the four Colleges were considered and discussion was held to suggest the way forward. HKAM would prepare a further summary report and shall meet with the Minister of Health later this year to discuss future plans. Prepared by Dr KH Lee 6 August

14 hip of General Dentistry A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (CDSHK) and the Hong Kong Dental Association (HKDA) on the 13 July The signatories were Dr Joseph Chan, President of the CDSHK and Dr Sigmund Leung, President of the HKDA. The MOU confirmed that the HKDA is the program administrator of the hip in General Dentistry (MGD) and is responsible for organizing the lectures and other training activities for the MGD trainees. 15 Conjoint Winter Scientific Meeting The Conjoint Winter Scientific Meeting co-organized with the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong was held on 15 th November 2009 at the HKAM Building. The title of the whole day meeting was: Advances and High-tech Dentistry The invited overseas speaker was Dr Nils-Gunnar Berg from Sweden speaking on CAD/CAM restorative dentistry. Local speakers include fellows and members of the CDSHK as well as teaching staff from the Faculty of Dentistry. The speakers presented the most updated procedures and the latest state of the art equipment in dentistry to the audience. The event was well-attended and was supported by the dental trade. 16 Future Events 2010 Joint Congress on Implant Dentistry (3-5 November 2010) The College has collaborated with the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), represented by the Global Council for Osseointegration (GCO), to hold a 3-day congress on implant dentistry. The venue will be the HKAM Jockey Club Building. The provisional list of speakers includes local and international luminaries in the field of implant dentistry, such as Professor Niklaus Lang, Professor WK Leung, Professor Friedrich Neukam (Germany) and Professor Christoph Hämmerle (Switzerland). Please look out for further details from the College later on this year and mark your calendars to avoid missing this important and unique meeting. College Conferment Ceremony and Dinner The College Conferment Ceremony and Dinner will be held on the evening of Thursday, 4 November This annual event, where fellowships and memberships are conferred on newly-admitted fellows and members, will be followed by a dinner. This is an important occasion to our new fellows, members and their families. It is also a good opportunity for the rest of us to welcome them into our college and share in the camaraderie of the occasion.
