But with the introduction of BisCover and the repositioning of Fuji Coat LC, this category is beginning to expand outside its previous small niche. Certainly applying them to provisionals is still an important use, especially for the four products that are not oriented toward intraoral utilization. But using them judiciously intraorally can definitely take the pressure off achieving a high polish to every restoration. None of these products can be properly cured with most LEDs. And while they all will appear polymerized after 10 seconds of curing with a halogen light, their intraoral durability may be enhanced by curing for 40 seconds. Use on Provisionals Polishing provisionals always seems to be a rushed procedure, somewhat like an afterthought. This task usually comes at the end of the appointment when the local anesthetic may be wearing off and the next patient has already been seated in an adjoining treatment room. While bis-acryl composites and acrylic can be polished reasonably well (especially for non-critical posterior areas) and quickly using a polishing brush, an enamel-like gloss still requires more a time-consuming effort. These products eliminate the polishing step and allow you to create a high shine with very little effort. They can also fill surface voids and mend seams that may appear when a repair or add-on is done. In addition, they can facilitate provisional cement removal. Application Procedure After contouring and smoothing, scrub provisional with soapy water using a toothbrush to remove any grinding debris. Dry well, dispense material directly onto a disposable brush or into a dappen dish and apply a thin coating to the provisional. Cure with a halogen light The Ratings 2005 REALITY Publishing Co. 3 Criteria for Material Selection All of these materials can be applied to provisionals, but only two are indicated for intraoral use. The four materials that are just indicated for extraoral application are very similar and could just about be used interchangeably. There are only subtle differences between them, with the most obvious distinguishing criteria being: If the material is very thin, it will not obliterate any surface anatomy you may have created. On the other hand, if you have surface voids, a thicker material will be more beneficial. Some of these products have a very strong smell, which can be offensive to your staff and patients. Only one of these products is currently available in a convenient syringe, which means the type of bottle can make a difference. Use Direct composite restorations While it can be placed over uncured composite, you will most likely contour the restoration first and instead of polishing, etch the surface of the restoration (as a cleaning agent) and adjacent tooth structure, rinse, dry, apply BisCover, and light cure. If you use the Modifier, do not exceed a 1:1 ratio and gently air-dry to evaporate the acetone BEFORE light curing. If you do choose to apply BisCover over uncured composite, do not use the Modifier. Provisional restorations and acrylic appliances Contour and scrub provisional of grinding debris. Wash, dry, apply. While it can be used over the entire restoration, you may choose to confine it to the facial surface and quickly polish the other surfaces. This application protocol will give you the best surface gloss on the visible area of the provisional and prevent over tightening of contacts and/or creating premature occlusal contacts, both of which would cause you to make post-application adjustments. Using the Modifier to minimize the film thickness certainly helps, but it is still faster to quickly polish the nonvisible areas. Since it does not contain methyl methacrylate, the typical strong acrylic smell associated with these products is greatly reduced. It has a very slight odor. Bottles Both BisCover and the Modifier come in typical plastic squeeze bottles with integral droppers. 8 REALITY If you appreciate the value of glazing provisionals instead of polishing them and would like to do the same to definitive restorations intraorally, BisCover will fill the bill. With a minimal (virtually no) air-inhibited layer, no methyl methacrylate (minimizing the typical strong acrylic smell), and its syringe delivery system, it is a one-of-a-kind product, since it can also be used intraorally. However, our evaluations show the gloss will be present for at least two months (as evidenced on provisionals). Fuji Coat LC has been formulated to seal glass ionomer or resin ionomer restorations. And it performs this task very admirably it produces a very acceptable gloss. However, you must manually remove the airinhibited layer from its surface with a 2x2. When we compared its gloss with that of BisCover, it was only minimally less shiny. And, its cost is significantly lower than that of BisCover. QuikGlaze is the original glaze created for provisionals. It is very fluid, has a strong acrylic odor, applies quickly, and produces a very nice, shiny, rock-hard surface that will not obliterate the facial anatomy. From our clinical evaluation, we found the glaze would not fade at all anteriorly for at least two weeks, but was less apparent after three months. It was less durable when used on a posterior provisional. However, the glass bottle is not user-friendly. TempART GlossCoat is the least expensive product by far in this category. As a matter of fact, all the products in this section just designed for placing a glaze on a provisional are over five times the cost of this product. In any event, applying it was not a simple matter. The glass bottle makes it difficult to dispense and its very fluid consistency is difficult to control. In addition, its odor may be the strongest in this category. On the other hand, its performance once thoroughly cured is satisfactory, although several evaluators felt the glaze dissipated rather quickly during the provisional phase. Tempglaze is a virtual clone of QuikGlaze. It is a liquid with a strong acrylic odor, applies easily, and creates the typical hard, shiny surface. Its plastic bottle is much easier to use compared to glass bottles. LuxaGlaze is different than the other two products due to being thicker in viscosity as a result of its silica thickener. While this is an advantage if you are trying to fill large surface voids, the increased viscosity makes it more difficult to apply. When used on methyl methacrylate provisional restorations, one evaluator reported that it was difficult to achieve a totally glossy surface, as there seemed to be streaking and bubble inclusions. After light curing, an uncured air-inhibited layer remains on the surface which, when wiped off, does not leave as high a polish. Due to its viscosity, it can create heavy occlusal contacts that may require an occlusal adjustment. Unfortunately, the initial glaze in the majority of cases was lost after about two weeks. In our twomonth aging group, there were rough patches on the surface on which LuxaGlaze was applied. On the other hand, it does not have a strong acrylic odor.
