Oral embryology and histology are also presented.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND RELATED COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Identify, take, and record vital signs 1.1 Identify the vital signs essential to the patient's health and well being. 1.2 Take and record a patient's blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration rate. 2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of common dental and medical emergencies and their management. 2.1 Identify various dental emergencies and describe their treatment. 2.2 Identify various medical emergencies and describe their treatment. 2.3 List and describe medicaments that may be used for medical emergencies in the dental office. 2.4 Identify the essential elements of an emergency medical kit and list the uses for each. 2.5 Describe the chain of command in a dental emergency.

3 EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND RELATED COMPETENCIES cont.: 2.6 Identify medical conditions or health changes that may affect a patient s dental treatment. 3. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the types of anesthesia used in dentistry. 3.1 Describe the condition of a patient while sedated, care of the patient while sedated, and post-sedation treatment required. 3.2 Identify the sedatives commonly used in dentistry, their contraindications, and the administration of them (including nitrous oxide). 3.3 State the most common forms of topical anesthetics and describe their use. 3.4 State the most common types of local anesthetics, their components and describe their use and effect on the human body. 3.5 Identify the four stages of general anesthesia, and describe the agents most commonly used to produce general anesthesia. 3.6 Describe the use of nitrous oxide in dentistry and identify the three planes of analgesia. 4. Describe a basic understanding of the drugs commonly prescribed for dental conditions and the assistant s role in drug management. 4.1 Describe the assistant's and the dentist's role in preventing drug abuse in the dental office. 4.2 Locate and interpret information about drugs using available sources and reference materials. 4.3 List the components of a written prescription and prepare a prescription for the dentist's signature. 4.4 Identify, by schedule, the major drugs controlled by the Controlled Substance Act. 4.5 Describe drugs used in dentistry for the control of anxiety. 4.6 Identify analgesics commonly used in dentistry. 4.7 Identify antibiotics commonly used in dentistry and their specialized uses. 4.8 Describe the uses of vasoconstrictors, antihistamines, corticosteriods, atropine sulfate, oxygen, and hemostatics in dentistry. 4.9 Describe and discuss how to take or update drug and allergy history Define and discuss drug interaction, reactions, and effects.

Demonstrate a basic understanding of the clinical features, etiology, and treatment for common oral pathologies. 5.1 Identify common disturbances in dental development and describe their causes. 5.2 Describe disease of the pulp and dental caries, their probable causes and treatments. 5.3 Identify common diseases of the oral mucous membranes, their probable causes and treatment. 5.4 List the symptoms of oral cancer, identify oral cancer, and list the steps in preventing cancer. 5.5 Identify common premalignant oral lesions. 5.6 Identify hyperplastic oral lesions. 5.7 Identify AIDS related lesions and discuss the role of opportunistic infections in AIDS patients. 6. Demonstrate a basic understanding of oral embryology. 6.1 Describe the embryonic development of the palate including the formation of the primary and secondary palate. 6.2 Describe the embryonic development of the mandible. 6.3 Describe the postnatal growth of the maxilla and mandible. 6.4 List the three developmental periods in the life cycle of a tooth and describe the stages within each period. 6.5 Discuss common abnormalities in tooth and jaw development that may occur. 7. Demonstrate a basic understanding of oral histology. 7.1 Describe the following tissues in terms of function, structure, and possible disorders: enamel, dentin, pulp, cementum, and periodontal ligament. 7.2 List and identify the structures which form the attachment apparatus and gingival unit of the periodontium. Written examinations are used to evaluate student progress. A minimum of five tests and a comprehensive final exam will be given. All exam grades are averaged equally to determine the final grade. A grade of C is required for graduation from the Dental Assisting Program. The following grading scale will be used as a guide in determining the final letter grade for this course: A = % B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = 0-59% For attendance and testing policies, see the Dental Assisting Student Handbook.
