The efficacy of ozone on carious diseases without cavity formation in permanent molars. A controlled-prospective clinical study. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Within a period up to 3 months, the application of ozone gas for incipient carious diseases without cavity formation reversed and/or slowed the progression of the carious disease process in patients at a high risk for carious diseases. 2. Clinical reversal of root caries through the use of ozone in an 18-month controlled double-blind trial with a randomly allocated control group. CONCLUSIONS: Leathery non-cavitated primary root caries can be predictably arrested non-operatively with ozone and remineralising products. This treatment regime is an effective alternative to conventional "drilling and filling" 3. It proved that KaVo HealOzone can be used to reliably stop root caries progression. Four groups of root caries were compared: I. Not treated II. Treated with ozone alone III. Treated with ozone followed by sealant IV. Treated with sealant alone The follow-up examinations were performed using the electrical carious monitor (ECM), using DIAGNOdent and a clinical index over a three-month period. The values in groups II - IV improved after one and three months, respectively. The values in the untreated control group I worsened compared to baseline. Ozone can consequently be used as a non-invasive treatment modality for treating root caries. The 12-month follow-up examination confirmed this result.
