Course Description This laboratory course provides an introduction to the theory, fabrication and use of several representative removable and fixed orthodontic appliances. 7. Course Purpose The purpose of this course is to provide the student an understanding of orthodontic treatment concepts and basic skills necessary to fabricate several types of devices typically used or observed in a dental practice. Laboratory sessions present specific techniques used in the formation of such appliances and include wire bending, cold-cure acrylicing procedures, manipulation of thermoplastic materials, band placement and soldering procedures. Presentations of clinical situations using removable and fixed appliances reinforce the laboratory assignments. 8. Course Goals This laboratory course is designed to provide students with opportunities to: a. Learn principles and develop skills in bending orthodontic wires. b. Fit orthodontic bands. c. Use cold-cure acrylic. d. Learn orthodontic soldering techniques. e. Learn principles for designing and fabricating orthodontic appliances that may be used to treat limited orthodontic problems. 9. Wirebending Exercises (maximum -18 points/6 grading categories) Exercise 1 and 2 must be complete and on time. Instructor will select which exercise to submit. 2. Maxillary Acrylic Plate with Pontic (maximum -15 points/5 grading categories) o Ball clasps between 1 st and 2 nd bicuspids on each side of the arch. o Left central incisor pontic placed on patient's left edentulous space. o Upper course model with properly trimmed and finished acrylic plate. 3. Maxillary Active Plate (maximum -18 points/6 grading categories) o 3 x 3 Hawley labial bow. o Arrow clasps between 1 st and 2 nd bicuspids. o "S/Z" springs placed lingual of patient's right and left lateral incisor. o Properly trimmed and finished acrylic plate. 4. Maxillary Pressure Laminated Mouthguard Over Orthodontic Brackets (maximum -12 points/4 grading categories) o Block-out brackets, archwires, dental spacing, and eruption of permanent teeth. o Detail of formation using dual lamination procedure. 3 o o Place student name between layers. Trim and finish appliance. 5. Mandibular 6x6 (maximum -12 points/4 grading categories) Lower course model containing: o Bands placed on first permanent molars. o Properly adapted lingual wire. Adjustment loops mesial to molar bands are required. o Correct union of lingual wire and molar bands with silver solder. o Smooth and high shine metal framework. 6. Quizzes (maximum -25 points/5 quizzes, 5 questions each) Five open book pop-quizzes each containing 5 multiple-choice questions will be given throughout the year. Each quiz will be graded. Course Failure and Remediation Students who earn an "F" grade in this course may be given the opportunity to remediate. Remediation will be permitted only at the discretion of the School of Dental Medicine's Executive Council. If permitted, remediation will take the form of retaking the course. A grade of < C > will be required to remediate this course. The resulting grade will be listed on the transcript as "F/P". Incomplete grades will be awarded under those conditions as described in the student handbook B. Please review the student handbook for how to proceed in these instances, and advise me accordingly, or the Office of Student Affairs if there is an emergency or medical illness. D. Canceled Classes If, for any reason, a scheduled session is not held, the scheduled event will occur at the next session unless otherwise announced. E. Distractions in the Classroom/Behavioral Expectations As students in a health professions school, students are expected to display conduct consistent with their status as entering members of the profession. In recent years, cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices have been sources of disruption in classrooms. All electronic devices except those specifically required by the course director or lecturer are not permitted in class. If these devices go off during class, the student with the device will be asked to leave. H. Professional Conduct The University has a responsibility to promote academic honesty and integrity and to develop procedures to deal effectively with instances of academic dishonesty. Students are responsible for the honest completion and representation of their work, for the appropriate citation of sources, and for respect for others academic endeavors.
