4 Product Information IPS InLine The Conventional Metal-Ceramic Description of the material IPS InLine is a leucite ceramic which is based in part on natural raw materials (feldspar). Natural feldspars are mixtures of potassium feldspar (KAISi3O8; orthoclase) and sodium feldspar (NaAlSi3O8; albite). The potassium feldspar provides the dental ceramic with ideal abrasion resistance, higher thermal expansion (leucite), as well as chemical resistance. The leucite crystals embedded in the glass matrix increase the strength of the restoration. The propagation of cracks is slowed or deflected by the leucite crystals. In the process, the crystalline phase absorbs fracture energy. As a result, the propagation of cracks is arrested or slowed down. In the development of IPS InLine, Ivoclar Vivadent has harnessed the experience gained over the past few years to achieve simplified ceramic processing. The targeted grain size distribution and the fabrication procedure represent the basis for the extraordinary advantages of IPS InLine. ACCURATE shade matching! IPS InLine facilitates the application of the opaquer and speeds up the placement of Dentin and Incisal materials. The result is excellent shade matching with minimal time and effort. FAST results! Given the favourable firing properties of the ceramic, restorations can be completed with one to two main firings. IPS InLine shows optimum sintering behaviour, which makes complicated and repetitive corrective firings a thing of the past. BEAUTIFUL restorations! Restorations made of IPS InLine ceramic materials impress users with their overall natural appearance. Moreover, there are various additional materials to achieve special effects. 5 IPS InLine PoM Press-on-Metal Ceramic The Touch Up materials are leucite-containing glass-ceramics, which are pigmented according to the ingot shade concept. The coefficient of thermal expansion and firing temperature of the materials are adjusted for application in the cervical area after pressing and prior to the characterization firing cycles. The press-on technique is an ideal solution to meet the changes in the dental market and an increasing interest in optimizing working procedures. The Press-on-Metal technique! IPS InLine PoM ideally combines the advantages of the press technique with the casting technique that has been proven for years using popular laboratory equipment. The result is a leucite ceramic that can be pressed with precision fit on stable metal frameworks. What does Press-on-Metal mean for your laboratory? The Press-on-Metal technique helps to streamline working procedures without compromising the quality of the work. You can concentrate on the essentials, such as shade selection, function and surface structure of the restoration. Thus, you are able to easily achieve consistent, reproducible quality. The wax-up corresponds to the final shape. The shrinkage behaviour associated with conventional metal-ceramics is a thing of the past. As easy as that The restoration is processed according to the lost wax technique. The opaqued metal framework is first waxed up in the desired shape and function and invested with the IPS PressVEST (conventional) or IPS PressVEST Speed investment materials. After investment and burning out of the wax restoration, the IPS InLine PoM ingot is pressed into the investment mould using the EP500, EP600, EP600 Combi or Programat EP 5000 press furnace. After divesting the pressed objects, they are individually finished and characterized. The new Shade/Stains and Glaze materials endow the restorations with their final shade. Consequently, it meets the highest aesthetic demands. The colour of the press material is completed by colour pigments. The base material in powder form is processed to monolithic press ingots after shaping them under vacuum. The structure of the processed material is homogeneous and free of pores. The firing stability of the ingot allows Touch Up materials, Shades, Stains and Glaze materials to be applied without compromising the accuracy of fit of the restoration. 5 Important processing restrictions Combination with any other ceramic materials The frameworks and connectors must not fall below the required minimum thickness The press ceramic must not fall below the required minimum thickness Layering with IPS InLine Dentin, Incisal, Deep Dentin, Margin, Impulse and Gingiva materials Pressing over metal frameworks that do not exhibit the required minimum thickness Side effects If patients are known to be allergic to any of the components in the materials, IPS InLine PoM restorations should not be used.

7 The coordinated Ivoclar Vivadent alloys IPS InLine... is suitable for alloys with a CTE of approx to 15.0 x 10-6 K -1 at C. If the recommendations regarding scallop-type framework design (as described on page 28) are observed, and ceramic layers do not exceed 1.5 mm, these alloys may be processed in the Programat furnaces using standard cooling. IPS InLine PoM... is suitable to be pressed on alloys with a CTE of 13.8 to 14.5 x 10-6 K -1 at C and up to max. 10% silver. The following Ivoclar Vivadent alloys have been tested regarding their compatibility with IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM. 8 Important IPS InLine If these minimum requirements cannot be observed, cooling to *800 C, or **700 C (depending on the alloy type), is required in conjunction with all main firings and glaze firings. In the case of ceramic layers thicker than 1.5 mm up to max. 2.5 mm, as well as extensive reconstructions (e.g. implant-borne restorations) in combination with high gold alloys and predominantly base alloys, cooling to *800 C, or **700 C, is required. This also applies to soldered restorations. Important IPS InLine PoM In conjunction with alloys in the CTE range of below 13.8 (x 10-6 K -1 at C) and above 14.5 (x 10-6 K -1 at C), no ceramic shoulders should be applied. For this framework design (ceramic shoulder) or if non-metal supported areas are present, the cooling and tension conditions are critical. If ceramic shoulders are applied, alloys in the CTE range of approx (x 10-6 K -1 at C) should be used. In the case of single restorations, in particular if ceramic shoulders are present, the 200-g investment ring should be exclusively used, as it ensures optimum expansion values as well as ideal cooling and tension conditions. 8

9 Preparation guidelines and minimum thicknesses A stable and aesthetic metal-ceramic restoration is achieved by preparation with sufficient space available. The usual preparation guidelines known for metal-ceramics apply for IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM. Your dentist can apply a conventional cementation protocol as usual. A ceramic shoulder provides an aesthetic advantage for single and bridge abutment crowns. For this purpose, shoulder preparation is required. It is also possible to restore preparations with a tapered metal margin, for which a chamfer preparation is suitable. For metalsupported inlays, partial crowns and inlay-retained bridges that are conventionally cemented, a bevel should be prepared to reduce the cement margin; the margin, however, should be made of metal. For adhesive cementation, the margin can be kept in ceramic. However, the margin must not be bevelled, since bevelled ceramic margins that are not supported by metal are susceptible to fracture. IPS InLine - the conventional metal-ceramic IPS InLine PoM - the Press-on-Metal ceramic Minimum thickness of metal frameworks: Crowns min. 0.3 mm Abutment crowns min. 0.5 mm Due to the optical properties, the following layer thicknesses have to be observed if IPS InLine PoM is pressed onto metal frameworks: Metal framework: crowns min. 0.3 mm, abutment crowns 0.5 mm IPS InLine PoM ceramic: min. 0.8 mm >1, > >1.2 > With conventional cementation, a minimum height of 3 mm of the prepared tooth and a convergence angle of approx. 6 must be observed. Observe the minimum connector dimensions for bridges. The connector dimension depends on the selected alloy and the pontic width (see Manual on Framework Design, page 9). 26 IPS InLine Conventional Layering Criteria for framework design The framework design is the key to the success of durable metal-ceramic restorations. The more attention given to the framework design, the better the final results and the clinical success will turn out to be. 1. Functional support of the veneering ceramic The framework reflects the shape of the tooth in a reduced form. It should be designed in such a way that it supports the cusps and incisal edges so that a nearly even layer thickness of the veneering ceramic can be achieved in the cusp-fissure area. In this way, the masticatory forces occurring during functional chewing are exerted on the framework rahter than on the veneering ceramic. Therefore, the framework should not exhibit any sharp angles or edges (see diagram), so that the masticatory forces do not cause stress peaks, which may result in cracks or delamination. To achieve this, the framework is reduced exactly to the inner edge of the chamfer or shoulder preparation. In this way, functional support of the framework by the prepared tooth is achieved. A framework that accurately fits the prepared tooth is essential in order to keep the shoulder material from reaching the inner surface of the framework. Framework stability The dimensions of the interproximal connector surface greatly influences the stability of the restoration during the laboratory procedure, as well as the clinical long-term success after cementation. Therefore, the corresponding forces must be transferred to the framework rather than the veneer. Particularly in bridge reconstructions, the stability in the connector area between the abutment and the pontic must be ensured by the framework design and its adequate thickness. The design of the framework and its thickness must meet the visual, functional and periodontal hygiene requirements of the patient. A full wax-up reduced to allow space for the ceramic material is the optimum prerequisite. During the laboratory procedures, the framework is repeatedly exposed to high temperatures. These firing temperatures may cause the framework to distort and compromise the accuracy of fit if it has not been properly designed and if the required thickness has not been observed. A scallop-type design with interproximal reinforcements will provide the necessary strength needed to avoid deformation of the framework. Furthermore, to ensure even cooling of the bridge pontic, the addition of a lingual metal band to aid in cooling is advantageous. The accuracy of fit (sinter shrinkage) has to be optimized by means of a 2 nd Margin firing. Use the same Margin materials as for the 1 st Margin firing for that purpose. First, however, isolate the die again using IPS Ceramic Separating Liquid. Then, supplement the missing areas by carefully applying the Margin material in the space created by the 1 st Margin firing, thus providing the ceramic shoulder with optimum accuracy of fit. After that, complete the ceramic shoulder and dry. Carefully remove the framework from the die and place it on the firing tray. In this way, the ceramic material is prevented from drying out or sticking to the model respectively. Use IPS Model Sealer followed by IPS Ceramic Separating Liquid to seal the stone die and the adjoining areas of the model. IPS InLine Conventional Layering Tip: To achieve an optimum bond between the ceramic material and the opaquer surface, apply IPS InLine Deep Dentin or Dentin material in small increments in the cervical and interdental areas (for bridges) and slightly roughen it. In this way, the adaption of the ceramic material on the opaquer surface is enhanced. Make sure to over-contour the restoration when layering so that the required tooth shape is achieved after firing. Condense the ceramic surface (after contouring) using a large, dry brush to make it more homogeneous. This prevents the ceramic from pulling away from the cervical margin. After lifting the bridge off the model, supplement the contact points using Dentin and Incisal materials. Additionally, the interdental area must be separated using a thin blade and cutting through the ceramic down to the opaquer before firing. The ceramic material is applied according to the layering diagram. For an optimum firing result, the interdental area must be separated. The interdental areas and proximal contact points must be given special attention. Fire the restoration using the firing parameters for the 2 nd Dentin and Incisal firing. Place the completely layered restoration on the firing tray and make sure it is adequately supported. Place the firing tray with the restoration into the firing chamber only after the furnace head is completely open and the buzzer has sounded. Use the firing parameters stipulated below to fire the restoration. If another consistency is desired, the material can be slightly diluted with IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Glaze and Stains Liquid. Next, apply the glazing material in the usual manner using a brush. Avoid excessively thick layers of glazing material, as well as thinning the glaze with too much Glaze and Stains Liquid. Small shade adjustments can be made together with the Glaze firing cycles. If no Shade/Stains and Characterization firing is required, the glazing material is first applied as a Wash layer, followed by a second Glaze firing. 56 Wax-up Fabricate the wax-up using wax that burns out without leaving residue. The following procedure has to be observed for the fully anatomical technique: Separate the dies with a commercial wax separator, particularly in the marginal area. Weigh the opaquered metal framework and write down the weight. The weight serves to determine the wax weight after the wax-up. Subsequently, secure the framework on the model in the proper position and wax the margins first. Design a fully anatomical wax-up as usual. Observe a layer thickness of at least 0.8 mm. Make sure not to exceed a thickness of 1.5 mm in order to ensure optimum shade reproduction. The wax thicknesses of at least 0.8 mm have to be observed, as otherwise miscasts e.g. incomplete pressing may be the result. Design a fully anatomical wax-up on the metal framework. 56

57 Sprueing The sprue diameter should be 3 mm. For multi-unit bridges, each bridge unit must be provided with a sprue. Always place the sprues in the direction of flow of the ceramic and at the thickest part of the wax-up in order to ensure unimpeded flow of the viscous ceramic. Depending on the number of objects to be invested, either a 100-g or 200-g investment ring base is selected. Bridges must be pressed using the 200-g investment ring system. 58 Investing Investing is carried out using either IPS PressVEST (e.g. overnight) or IPS PressVEST Speed. For that purpose, the IPS Silicone Ring with the matching investment ring gauge is used. Determine the precise wax weight as follows: Weigh the investment ring base (seal the opening of the investment ring base with wax). Position the waxed-up objects on the investment ring base and secure with wax and weigh again. The wax weight is calculated as follows: Total weight minus the weight of the investment ring base minus the framework weight (including opaquer). The investment material contains quartz powder. Therefore, the inhalation of dust must be avoided. Use a suitable instrument for filling the cavity of the wax pattern. Make sure that the delicate wax margins are not damaged. Carefully position the IPS Silicone Ring on the investment ring base without damaging the wax objects. The silicone ring must sit flush on the investment ring base. Subsequently, carefully fill the investment ring with investment material up to the marking and position the ring gauge with a hinged movement. Allow the investment material to set without manipulating the investment ring. Do not use IPS PressVEST for investment over the weekend to prevent crystallization. 58

59 Preheating After the stipulated setting time of the respective investment material (IPS PressVEST or IPS PressVEST Speed), the investment ring is prepared for preheating as follows: Remove the ring gauge and ring base with a turning movement. Carefully push the investment ring out of the IPS Silicone Ring. Remove rough spots on the bottom surface of the investment ring with a plaster knife and check the 90 angle. Investment material residue must not enter the sprues. Blow into the sprues if necessary. If several investment rings are preheated together, mark them with the respective ingot shade. When placing several investment rings in the preheating furnace using the Speed method, make sure that the furnace temperature does not drop too much. The indicated holding time starts when the preheating temperature is reached. Place the investment ring towards the rear wall; tipped with the opening facing down. Do not preheat the IPS InLine PoM ingot and the IPS e.max Alox plunger. In order to ensure smooth working procedures in the laboratory on a daily basis, impeccable functioning of the infrastructure and the preheating furnaces is essential. This includes their maintenance, cleaning with a vacuum cleaner in a cool state as well as regular checks of the temperature controls and heating elements, etc., by the manufacturer. 59

60 Selection of ingots Select the proper ingot. Only seven shades are sufficient to reproduce all the Chromascop, A-D and Bleach shades. Therefore, it is possible to press fully anatomical restorations for different patient cases in one press cycle. The final tooth shade is achieved by individual characterization using the new Shade/Stains and Glaze materials. The grid ensures quick and even cooling of the investment ring and prevents undesired heat accumulation. 61

62 Divesting After cooling of the investment ring (approximately 1 hour), remove the investment material at the height of the Alox plunger using a separating disk. After that, remove the investment ring around the pressed object using a polishing jet medium. The following parameters must be observed: After removing the Alox plunger area, a polishing jet medium at approximately 4 bar pressure can be used until the pressed objects become visible. For fine divestment, reduce the blasting pressure to approximately bar and carefully blast the object. Make sure that the edges or shoulders are not damaged or even lost. Cover the marginal areas thoroughly with the glove. Mark the length of the Alox plunger. Separate the investment ring using a separating disk. Tip: The Alox plunger is already very clean if it is removed with tongs from the investment material. Check the cleanness and blast with Al2O3, if required. Sandblasting the objects 62

63 Separating / Finishing After separation of the sprues and smoothing of the attachment points, the pressed object is fitted to the master model. For that purpose, the usual rotary instruments (as those used for IPS Empress) are used (without pressure and over-heating). After that, carefully sandblast the restoration. Finally, clean the restoration under running water or with steam. Dry thoroughly with oil-free air. IPS InLine PoM Precision press-on technique Bridge with sprues Special attention is required for separating the palatal metal retainer. Make sure to separate the retainer carefully after glazing without creating too much heat and polish. Adjustments with IPS InLine PoM Touch Up For minor shape adjustments, the 7 Touch Up materials are available in the respective ingot shade. The Touch Up materials must only be used for metal-supported IPS InLine PoM restorations. Processing The restoration must be free of dirt and grease prior to adjustment. For that purpose, clean the restoration thoroughly with a steam jet. Mix IPS InLine PoM Touch Up material with IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Build-Up Liquid, apply the material in the necessary areas using a brush and slightly blot them with an absorbent cloth. Place the restoration on the firing tray and fire it. Next, finish the restoration or apply second Touch Up adjustments with the same parameters. 64 Individual finishing Final finishing and preparing for Stain and Glaze firing Finally, the restoration is finished. Provide a true-to-nature surface structure, such as growth lines and convex/concave areas. If gold and/or silver dust was used to visualize the surface texture, the restoration has to be thoroughly cleaned with steam. Make sure to remove all gold or silver dust in order to avoid any discolouration. Provide a true-to-nature shape and surface structure Stain and Characterization firing The restoration must be free of dirt and grease before the Stain and Characterization firing. Any contamination of the restoration after cleaning must be prevented. Please observe the following procedure: For better wetting of the stains, a small quantity of IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Glaze and Stain Liquid may be slightly rubbed into the surface. More intensive shades are achieved by repeated staining, rather than by applying thicker layers. The cusps and fissures can be individualized using stains. If only minor shade adjustments and individual characterizations are applied, the materials may be fired together with the Glaze firing. Extrude the desired amount of IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Shade from the syringe and mix with the IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Glaze and Stains Liquid to the desired consistency. Avoid pooling and applying excessively thick layers. More intensive shades are achieved by repeated staining and firing, rather than by applying thicker layers. IPS InLine PoM Precision press-on technique Firing in the Programat furnace: Firing parameters for the Shade/Stains firing (Stain and Characterization firing) NEW T 800 / 1472 B 403 / 757 S min. 6 t 60 / 108 H min. 1 V / 842 V /1470 Additional Stain and Characterization firing cycles can be conducted with the same firing parameters. Glaze firing - If a Shade/Stains and Characterization firing has been conducted, a one-time Glaze firing is conducted according to the description below. - Remove IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Glaze paste from its container and mix thoroughly. If another consistency is desired, the material can be slightly diluted with IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Glaze and Stains Liquid. Next, apply the glazing material in the usual manner using a brush. Avoid excessively thick layers of glazing material, as well as thinning the glaze with too much Glaze and Stains Liquid. Small shade adjustments can be made together with the Glaze firing cycles. - If no Shade/Stains and Characterization firing is required, the glazing material is first applied as a Wash layer, followed by a second Glaze firing. Firing in the Programat furnace: Firing parameters for the Glaze firing NEW T 800 / 1472 B 403 / 757 S min. 6 t 60 / 108 H min. 2 V / 842 V /1470 If furnaces from other manufacturers are used, these parameters have to be adjusted accordingly. Finally, check the shade of the completed restoration. If the gloss is unsatisfactory after the first Glaze firing, further glaze firing procedures may be conducted using the same firing parameters. 65

66 Add-On firing After the completion of a restoration, small adjustments, such as contact points, pontic rests, shoulder adjustments, may be necessary. Depending on your working habits, the IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Add-On 690 C/1274 F material may be used. Mix IPS InLine/IPS InLine PoM Add-On 690 C/1274 F (alone) with the desired modelling liquid, apply the material in the missing areas, and fire.
