The symposium is cosponsored by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry and the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Society. The symposium is supported by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, ADEAGies Foundation, Procter & Gamble Co., and the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation. Zack s abstract was titled In Vitro Assessment of Three Dentifrices Containing Fluoride in Preventing Demineralization of Overdenture Abutments and Root Surfaces. Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics and Dows, is Zack s mentor. Nicole presented Community-Based Dental Education and Clinical Performance Among Fourth-Year Dental Students. Dr. Michelle McQuistan, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, is her mentor. November 15 Diversity Events for November Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, who received a pediatric dentistry certificate from Iowa in 2003, has been elected second vice president of the American Dental Association (ADA). He has been an ADA member for 21 years and is past chair of the ADA Council on Communications. He has also served as a consultant for the ADA Council on Access, Prevention, and Interprofessional Relations. Dr. Shenkin is also past president of the Maine Dental Association.

2 Page 2 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. David Bohnenkamp Dr. David Bohnenkamp was born in Quincy, Illinois, and raised in Columbia, Missouri. He received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1979 and his M.S. in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) in His postdoctoral prosthodontics clinical training was completed in 1987 at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. In 1989, he was awarded diplomate status by the American Board of Prosthodontics and elected as a fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Bohnenkamp retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1995 and was a full-time partner and practitioner for six years in a private dental practice in Louisville, Colorado. In 2002, Dr. Bohnenkamp was appointed in the Department of General Dentistry as a full-time faculty member and assistant professor at the UTHSCSA Dental School. From 2002 to 2006, he was active in the predoctoral dental education program as a primary attending faculty and general practice group leader responsible for the supervision and evaluation of senior and junior dental students in all phases of clinical dentistry and patient management. Dr. Bohnenkamp received the Dental School Faculty Assembly Teaching Excellence Award in 2005 and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society in From , Dr. Bohnenkamp served as director of the International Dentist Education Program (IDEP) at the UTHSCSA Dental School. In 2009, he was promoted and tenured as an Associate Professor. David is married to Dr. Lily T. Garcia, associate dean for education, and they have a son who works for Outward Bound in Key Largo, Florida, and a daughter who is a sophomore at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. His hobbies include golf and snow skiing. Dr. Bohnenkamp is proud to be an alumnus of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and especially pleased to have the opportunity to return to Iowa City as a full-time faculty member at the dental school. The College of Dentistry Welcomes Dr. Nidhi Q. Handoo Nidhi Handoo, visiting assistant professor in Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine, completed her BDS training at Vasant Dada Patil Dental College, University of Kolhapur, India. She subsequently completed an internship at VPDC in Sangli, Maharashtra, India and spent a year as a house surgeon at Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, India. She subsequently completed the advanced training program in oral and maxillofacial pathology and an MS in stomatology at Iowa. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Handoo joined the faculty in 2010 as course director for Experiential Learning I and II. Beginning this year, she also teaches in the Oral Diagnosis Clinic and participates in DSP. Nidhi is married with two children who keep her quite busy. Her family loves to travel and are ardent Hawkeye fans. Nidhi likes reading, pottery, coffee with friends, volunteering, spending time with children, and putting a smile on someone s face.

3 Page 3 Dental Students Participate at the Sycamore Mall Halloween Event (Above, left to right): Staci Friese (D4), Heather Stillman (D4), Katie Nagel (D4), Justine Stemper (D4), Casey Goetz (D1), and Nicholas Luke (D2) are pictured at their booth during the Sycamore Mall Hal- On Monday October 28, several dental students (some in Halloween costume attire) participated in the annual Halloween event at the Sycamore Mall. The dental students provided oral health information and distributed stickers, bracelets, pencils, brushing calendars and magnets to over 600 children parading through in their Halloween costumes. The children had the opportunity to brush the teeth of the various puppets and interact with the dental students. The annual event has become a popular Iowa City tradition, and the College of Dentistry s students have been notable participants for several years. They are pictured in front of one of the banners recently developed and produced by Dr. Jarod Johnson (DDS 13). With funding from a Delta Dental mini-grant, Dr. Johnson also developed and produced several other banners and table top displays that can be used at health fairs and dental student events. Final Breast Cancer Awareness Day Tribute for October These faculty, students, and staff donned their pink t-shirts on October 31, as a final tribute to October as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
