Midwest Regional Student Research Conference Held April 10, 2010 The Midwest Regional Student Research Conference was held at the UI College of Dentistry on April 10, There were 48 student presenters from the University of Colorado, Denver; University of Minnesota; University of Illinois, Chicago; University of Missouri, Kansas City; Manitoba; and the University of Iowa (22 student presenters). Other attendees included Dr. Phillip Marucha, University of Illinois- Chicago; Drs. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Clark Stanford. Introductions for the event were given by Deborah Dietrich, Dr. Teresa Marshall, Dean David Johnsen, Dr. Stanford, Dr. John Keller, Dr. James Wefel, Dr. Christopher Squier, and Dr. John Warren. A tour of the Oral B plant in Iowa City was given during the day. The banquet reception was held at the One Twenty Six Restaurant in downtown Iowa City. Lobotomy began as an experimental treatment for psychiatric disorders, but it entered the medical mainstream by the 1950s. Neurologist and psychiatrist Walter Freeman popularized the procedure by refining it and demonstrating it around the country. Jack El-Hai, author of the award-winning biography, The Lobotomist: a Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness, explains how Freeman s controversial career and the advance and decline of lobotomy are closely linked. 4 Page 4 Enjoying Life After Retirement A group of retired women from the College of Dentistry meet for lunch on the first Monday of each month. This month, the women met at the Hilltop on North Dodge Street. Diane Dautremont, who took the photo, thought it might be interesting to include it in the DSB Weekly, to let everyone know that there is life after retirement. 5 Page 5 Dr. Jon Juhlin Creates T-Shirts for His Patients Dr. Jon Juhlin (DDS 89, MS and certificate, 91) is an endodontist in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This year he celebrated Root Canal Awareness Week, March 28-April 3, 2010 by creating a t-shirt logo. Dr. Juhlin says, When I first introduce myself to patients, many feel a great need to tell me why they are not great fans of dentists and are not pleased to see me for the root canal. I thought it would be cool to reward them with a t-shirt. Dr. Juhlin s hope is that by wearing the t-shirts, the general public will learn that they shouldn t fear root canals. (Below photo: Dr. Juhlin s children, Molly and J.P., each model the t-shirt. Dr. Juhlin plans to hand out the t-shirts to his patients throughout 2010.)

6 Student Go Green Committee Tips for Earth Month Page 6 College of Dentistry Green Tips for the Clinic Reduce/recycle clinic items that we often forget are reusable/recyclable. These include: 1. Lab coats: Keep until soiled or unsightly, then recycle in bins at both ends of the back hallways. 2. The paper portion of autoclave sleeves, even if it s just one piece (please remove all blue plastic). 3. Cardboard containers for gloves, paper towels, etc. 4. Plastic sleeves from irrigating syringes, empty alginate containers, etc. Minimize waste Here are some easy ways: 1. Only change your trash bag if it is over 1/2 full. 2. Find a convenient place to store your recyclable items until you can take them to the bins. 3. Use as few pairs of gloves throughout an appointment as possible. 4. Minimize the use of paper towels; only use what you need to get the job done.

8 Page 8 Absences Due to Severe Weather With the possibility of upcoming severe storms, it seems appropriate to seasonally remind departments of the University's severe weather policy. Even when severe weather makes travel difficult, the University remains open because of many functions that cannot be halted. Employees should therefore make every reasonable effort to report to work, consistent with safety. Guidelines for handling tardiness or absence due to bad weather are listed in Part II, Division I, Chapter 22.3 of the University Operations Manual. Time lost due to extreme weather conditions can be made up by arranging the following with the DEO/ Manager/Supervisor, as applicable: Employees may be authorized to make up the time absent through an alternate work schedule within the same work week to the extent an altered schedule is practical, feasible, and provides appropriate accountability. Employees may utilize accrued compensatory time or accrued vacation, if available, to remain in pay status; or be placed on leave without pay. Employees may be authorized to perform work at home or an alternate location, to the extent such is available, practical, and feasible, and provides appropriate accountability. The options outlined above should be available to all employees. Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement should refer to their bargaining agreement for any additional terms or conditions provided therein. Early Dismissal - During severe weather conditions, employees may be offered early dismissal. Time lost due to early dismissal must be handled consistent with the options outlined above. Only the President of the University has the authority to excuse employees without any provision for make-up of lost time. - Due to the concern for patient care, all clinical departments and units involved in patient care services will coordinate early dismissal of employees through the Associate Dean for Patient Care, Dr. Mike Kanellis or Director of Clinics, Dr. Ron Elvers. All other departments and units will coordinate similar action through the Dean's Office, Dr. Jed Hand. University policy requires that absence reports be completed for all time lost. In cases where the time missed is being charged to leave without pay, the hours missed should be recorded as code 24 (hours of absence without pay) on the employee time and leave record. 10 Page 10 UI and Palmer College Jaw Pain Study Invites Participants People age 21 or older with chronic jaw pain classified as temporomandibular disorder may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study investigating whether the Activator Chiropractic Technique can reduce head and neck pain and the need for prescription pain medications, and improve quality of life. The collaborative study involves the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science's Dental Clinical Research Center, and the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. Study participants will be randomly assigned to one of four different treatment groups. Participation, including follow-up, will last six months and involves examinations and treatment at the UI Dental Clinical Research Center. Participants assigned to chiropractic care will be referred to a private practice in Coralville. All examinations and treatment are provided free of charge. The UI College of Dentistry is recruiting subjects for a research study to evaluate dental fillings of the back teeth.
