3 Continuing Education Program Alumni Weekend Presented by the Classes of 1987 and 1992! ORAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS PRESENTING WITH VARIOUS FORMS OF CRANIOFACIAL ANOMALIES Patients often present with congenital and acquired tooth loss and the clinical team needs to diagnose, educate and provide care plans addressing a range of issues. The diagnostic phase is critical and often involves an orthodontic interdisciplinary team. This leads to progressive care plans engaging removable, fixed and implant Prosthodontics. This presentation will review the critical points of assessment, the process of informed consent and then provide clinical examples of care plans for the transitional adult in your practice. Clark Stanford, DDS, PhD, is UIC Distinguished Professor and Dean, The University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Dentistry, Chicago, Illinois. He was Associate Dean for Research and Centennial Fund Professor for Clinical Research, at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Iowa City, IA until October He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Bioengineering, College of Engineering at UIC. Dr. Stanford received his BS in 1984, his DDS in 1987, and his Certificate in Prosthodontics and PhD in Cell Biology in 1992 from the University of Iowa. He was on the Iowa faculty from He is the author of 22 book chapters, 122 published papers and more than 140 published research abstracts. He receives research funding from NIH, Foundations and from industry. He currently serves on multiple national and international committees. He is the recipient of 15 academic awards including the 2007 State of Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Distinguished Scientist Award (2007). CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL CARIES This presentation will introduce attendees to the ADA Caries Classification System and its use in the management of dental caries. Techniques and materials for the management and treatment of dental caries will be discussed. Rebecca Slayton, DDS, MS, earned her DDS in 1992 and her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry in 1998 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and her PhD in 1998 in Genetics from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Dr. Slayton is a board certified Pediatric Dentist and an examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Oral Clinical Exam. She is the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Slayton is the co-editor of a textbook entitled Early Childhood Oral Health and has authored numerous peer reviewed articles. Her research focuses on caries risk assessment tools and genetic factors that contribute to dental caries susceptibility. THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY MANAGEMENT OF THE CLEFT PATIENT This presentation will review the etiology and incidence of oral clefts and concentrate on the team approach to treating this patient population with particular emphasis on the dental team. With the incidence of a patient being born with cleft lip and/or palate approaching 1 in 700 births it is important for the dental practitioner to be aware of the need for coordinated care and be prepared to treat these very challenging patients. Steve Nelson, DDS, MS, is in private practice in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Nelson followed his father s footsteps and received his DDS in 1987 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He received his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas where he earned a Master s degree in Oral Biology. Dr. Nelson brings expertise in Orthognathic and Reconstructive Surgery to the residents at Denver Health and Hospitals and has been a member of the Rose Hospital Craniofacial and Cleft Palate team since He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons; is active in the American Dental Association (ADA); currently is a board member of the Colorado Dental Association Political Action Committee; and is serving as chair of the Colorado Dental Association Small Donor Committee. Dr. Nelson has been elected for a 14th term as the Speaker of the House of Delegates for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), and has been elected by his peers as a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. At the completion of the entire program, participants should be able to: Stanford: Describe diagnostic issues of tooth loss in the young adult; Know the treatment options for tooth replacement including advantages and challenges; and Know the outcomes of care when electing to perform tooth replacement in this population. Slayton: Understand how to use the ADA Caries Classification System to describe and monitor caries lesions; Learn about techniques and materials to manage early and advanced caries lesions; and Learn the indications and contraindications for the use of silver diamine fluoride. Nelson: Understand the difference in syndromic and non-syndromic etiologies of the cleft patient; Identify environmental factors associated with increased incidence of patients born with cleft lip and/or palate; and Identify the team members and their roles of a Cleft and Craniofacial team with specific understanding of the roles of the pediatric dentist, general dentist, orthodontist, periodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and prosthodontist.
