See page 6 Henry Husemann, MDT, CDT, Department of Prosthodontics, has successfully completed several years of rigorous coursework and an exam to raise his professional level from a certified dental technician (CDT) to a master dental technician (MDT). Henry purchased the MDT home study program in 2004 for $6,500. In 2011, with mentoring from his Iowa colleagues, he finished the coursework, which consisted of typical and non-typical academic agenda, quizzes, a final, and a full mouth wax-up he presented to a New York University (NYU) Board of Review before their final oral exam. The curriculum that Henry studied covers the stomatognathic system; occlusion; TMJ (temporomandibular joint); TMD (temporomandibular disorders); THA (true hinge axis); CR (centric relation); CO (central occlusion); pantograph tracings; face bow transfer materials sciences; etc. Henry says in the U.S. there are two dental technician organizations: the National Board for Certification (NBC) and the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NDL). A member of either organization must be a certified dental technician (CDT). CDT specialties include crown & bridge; ceramics; dentures; partials and orthodontics. He has been certified in crown & bridge as well as ceramics since Henry joined the College of Dentistry Department of Prosthodontics in 2004.

2 Page 2 Family Dentistry Faculty Conference and Grading Day Includes Years of Service Awards and Oral B Plant Visit The Department of Family Dentistry held its Faculty Conference and Grading Day on September 22, The Years of Service Awards were given to the following faculty and staff: Five years: Ms. Ann Powers, Ms. Twila Grieser, and Ms. Diane Duwa. Ten years: Ms. Cheryl Jennings. Fifteen years: Mr. Brian Kinser Twenty-five years: Adjunct Associate Professors Mark Marz, Peter Pauly, Bob Blew Thirty-five years: Dr. John Doering and Mr. Doug Aunan The group also had a tour of the Iowa City Oral B Plant (photo below). Lunch was provided by Catered by Charlotte. Ms. Rebecca Van Horn, Procter & Gamble, contributed to the cost of the lunch.

3 Page 3 Dental Assistants in Pediatric Dentistry Create Beautiful Art The dental assistants in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry wanted to make the clinic atmosphere friendlier and livelier for the children, faculty, and staff. 6 Page 6 Sustainability: Single Stream Recycling The University of Iowa has transformed the way it manages recyclable materials and will phase in a new single-stream recycling program across campus, effective Thursday, Sept. 1. The new recycling system integrates a user-friendly approach that will help colleges and departments meet the UI's 2020 Vision goal of 60 percent waste diversion. Single stream recycling means that newspaper, office paper, cardboard, lab plastics, nonredeemable drink containers, plastics, tin, aluminum, and most food containers can now be placed in the same collection bin instead of being sorted into individual containers. Redeemable plastics and landfill items will continue to be treated separately as in the past. The new recycling program encourages the campus community to become actively involved in recycling and waste diversion and allows them to contribute to success of the program, said Liz Christiansen, director of the UI Office of Sustainability. The College of Dentistry Go Green Committee is working with campus planners to help with the transition to single-stream recycling. The committee invites interested faculty, staff, and students to join the effort and help as facilitators here in the DSB, with the goal of having a Go Green Committee member from each department who will serve as a Go To person for questions. The committee is reviewing options for chair side and office recycle bins so the college will once again be a campus leader in recycling efforts by meeting the Vision 2020 The University of Iowa s Sustainability Targets. The University of Iowa s Staff Council Sustainability Committee and the Office of Sustainability are encouraging faculty, staff and students to learn more about recycling practices on campus by participating in Train the Trainer Sessions. If you are passionate about recycling and would be willing to share your knowledge with others in your work area, you are encouraged to sign up for these classes and become part of the University s Sustainability Education efforts. Participants will be given information concerning the UI s new single stream recycling program, talking points, FAQ guides, and contact resources that will allow them to effectively teach others throughout campus (as well as our community) about recycling. It will take a village all UI staff, faculty, and students to reach the University s 60% waste diversion goals by 2020 and make our campus a better place. If you are interested in learning about the new recycling practices and sharing that knowledge with other by conducting learning sessions in your work area, please contact joshua-smith@uiowa.edu to sign up for either of the following class times (see below).
