2 PURPOSE Lifelong learning in Dentistry is an ongoing challenge as technology and treatment modalities are constantly improving and expanding. Last Chance Dental CE features a wide variety of clinical topics to meet the needs of dentists who desire to improve their diagnostic and treatment skills, and ultimately their efficiency and productivity. This program will provide a wide variety of topics ranging from ergonomics to predictable extractions in addition to updated information pertinent to every general dentist. We are excited to provide such a diverse program for 2017 that will include topics of interest for every dentist, and are confident that it will be an enriching and productive experience. OBJECTIVES Discuss the Beers Criteria, START/STOPP Criteria and its relevance with geriatric dentistry and review over-the-counter drugs commonly used by older adults Manage patient selection to ensure competent and safe surgical care including post-op complications Recognize appropriate indications for socket preservation and perform them with more confidence Determine the restorative potentials of zirconia and highlight its limitations with respect to other restorative materials Know the effect of postural strain as it relates to clinical dentistry Demonstrate corrective exercises to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders Describe how best to use contemporary restoratives including bulk-fill restoratives, bioactive materials, sonic and thermoplastic posterior composites and more Describe conservative clinical techniques for esthetic improvement including white spot removal, tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, and Carolina bridges (all-porcelain bonded pontics) Chronicle steps for treating high risk caries patients including use of xylitol, fluoride varnish, silver diamine fluoride, probiotics, and more We gratefully acknowledge Clinician s Choice Dental Products for their generous support to this course.

3 Guest Faculty Dr. Harold Heymann, Inaugural Thomas P. Hinman Distinguished Professor of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He is a Fellow in the ICD, ACD, Academy of Dental Materials, and is a Fellow and Past-President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Dr. Heymann is Co-Senior Editor of Sturdevant s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry textbook and is a consultant to the ADA. He has authored over 200 scientific publications, given over 1,450 lectures worldwide, is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, and has received the Gordon J. Christensen Award for excellence as a CE speaker. Dr. Jordan Mellinger, received a BS in Exercise & Sports Science along with Athletic Training at the University of Georgia in He worked with Division 1 athletes at UGA along with completing a summer NFL internship with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He later earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy at MCG in 2012 and has been on staff at Sports Medicine since that time. He is also a Certified Athletic Trainer and participates in outreach programs to the local high schools including coverage and clinical education. Dr. Mellinger specializes in the treatment of spine, orthopedic, and sports injury with return to play. Mr. Ted Hanson, graduated in 1994 from King College in Bristol, TN with a BA in Psychology and completed his BS in Physical Therapy at MCG in Mr. Hanson has worked in inpatient and outpatient settings and currently serves as a Senior Physical Therapist in the Sports Medicine Department of West Wheeler Rehabilitation. He is a Certified Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment (MDT) clinician and his clinical expertise is in applying the MDT principles to the upper and lower extremities as well as the spine. He is regularly involved in Augusta University s Physical Therapy program as a part-time classroom instructor and clinical instructor. AU Faculty Dr. Monica Chana, Assistant Professor with joint appointments in the Department of Oral Health & Diagnostic Sciences and the Department of General Dentistry. She received her dental degree from The Dental College of Georgia, and completed advanced education training in General Dentistry with a focus on medically compromised patients in public health settings through NYU s Lutheran Dental Medicine program based in Atlanta, GA. She teaches courses in geriatric dentistry and community oral health, as well as working in the dental student clinics. Her clinical practice is focused on the geriatric and medically compromised population.

4 Dr. Michael Pruett, Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences at the Dental College of Georgia, and Director of the General Practice Residency Program. He received his DMD from the MCG School of Dentistry and completed a two-year GPR at the University of Virginia. He became the Director of Dentistry at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut while also serving as the Assistant Program Director of the GPR program at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He maintains an active private practice with emphasis on implant placement/ restoration, hospital dentistry, management of medically compromised patients, and restorative/sedation dentistry. Dr. Pruett is a member of numerous dental organizations and was selected as The Dental College of Georgia s Distinguished Alumnus for Dr. Ahmed Zaher, Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences. He received his dental degree at Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, Egypt. He completed his prosthodontics residency at Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. His teaching and research interests include fixed and removable prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics and ceramic materials. Barry Hammond and Rhoda Sword 8:00 a.m. Medications in the Elderly Dr. Monica Chana With the Graying of America and the increase in polypharmacy, keeping up with the most current medication recommendations for patients has become more and more complex. A brief overview of the Beers and START/STOPP Criteria for geriatric patients and the relevance of these criteria to patients in the dental office will be discussed. We will also review commonly misused over-the-counter medications and the potential impact of these medications on elderly adults. 9:00 a.m. Predictable Dentoalveolar Surgery for the General Practitioner Dr. Michael Pruett Most general practitioners have the skills needed to perform basic dentoalveloar surgery within their practices. In this program, many of the most commonly performed dentoalveolar procedures (extractions, socket preservation, pre-prosthetic surgery) will be reviewed to enable the practitioner to incorporate many of these basic procedures into their everyday practice. Material Update Dr. Ahmed Zaher During the last decade, zirconia ceramic material has been used extensively in different restorative aspects in dentistry; from single crowns to full arch implant supported restorations. The high success rate reported in studies makes us wonder if zirconia can be the universal restorative material or does it still have limitations?

7 3:00 p.m. Break 3:15 p.m. Musculoskeletal Injury in Clinical Dentistry Dr. Jordan Mellinger and Mr. Ted Hanson This program is a systematic, evidence based treatment approach which will review how practicing clinicians work that may not be favorable to long term musculoskeletal health. What can we implement now to minimize injuries that can place our careers in jeopardy? Dr. Harold Heymann This lecture will provide real-world, time proven information on a variety of topics critical to consistent long-term success in conservative restorative and esthetic dentistry. It will begin with an evidence-based overview of adhesive dentistry focusing on what works and what doesn t. It will cover adhesives, MMP s, composites, crown materials, matrix systems and caries risk.
