1 FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY REPORT: CIL I-02 JPAC CENTRAL IDENTIFICATION LABORATORY 30 September 2005 DENTAL REMAINS The dental remains consist of unrestored teeth #1, #9-11, #20, #22-23, and #26. Restored teeth include #2 (occlusal amalgam) and #15 (occlusal amalgam). There is a portion of maxilla articulating teeth #9-11 and a portion of mandible articulating teeth # Tooth #21 is missing postmortem. A maxillary Removable Partial Denture (RPD) is labeled Shreve H. R. RA 16 (illegible) 07 (illegible)(illegible) 6 and replaces teeth #4-8. A mandibular RPD replacing tooth #19 is unlabeled and has wire clasps for teeth #18, #20 and #21. Both dental prostheses are designated as CIL A-01. The dental remains are in good condition. Digital photographs (Figures 1-5) and radiographs were taken. Figure 1. ANTEMORTEM DENTAL INFORMATION The remains of CIL I-02 are associated with Sergeant (Sgt) Harold Robert SHREVE. The following dental information of Sgt SHREVE was used for comparison with the remains: 1. OQMG Form 371 (DATA ON REMAINS NOT YET RECOVERED OR IDENTIFIED) labeled SHREVE, Harold Robert with a dental chart date of 4 Jan 49. The form is unsigned. Page 2 of 6

COMPARISON The dental remains of CIL I-02 were compared with the antemortem narrative dental records of Sgt SHREVE and show concordance with five explainable discrepancies (Table 1). CIL I-02 includes a maxillary removable partial denture (RPD) that corresponds to an appliance described in the dental record of Sgt SHREVE. The maxillary RPD is labeled with Sgt SHREVE s name and service number: Shreve H. R. RA 16 (illegible) 07 (illegible)(illegible) 6 (Figure 3). Sgt SHREVE s service number is RA A photograph of Sgt Shreve shows a dark area between his maxillary teeth (Figures 6 and 7, red arrow). This area corresponds to the area indicated on the maxillary RPD between teeth #7 and #8 with a yellow arrow (Figure 7). An explainable discrepancy exists with tooth #8. The dental chart of Sgt Shreve indicates #8 as present. The maxillary RPD has a denture tooth replacing #8. This could be due to a clerical error in charting or tooth #8 being extracted at a later date, and the RPD was remade. Another explainable discrepancy exists with the mandibular RPD of the remains. Tooth #19 is indicated as missing in the antemortem records of Sgt SHREVE, but there is no mention of a mandibular prosthesis. The RPD contains a single denture tooth replacing a missing tooth #19 (Figure 4). Additionally, tooth #20 of the remains fits the prosthesis (Figure 5). It is likely that the mandibular RPD was constructed and the associated dental records are not available. Individual 1 (CIL I-01) was also missing tooth #19. However, he can be excluded because the RPD does not fit his mandibular dentition. Tooth #1 is present postmortem, while listed as missing antemortem. Without radiographs, unerupted teeth are not visible during routine dental examination, and as such would be listed as missing. This is a frequent charting error during this time period, as dental radiographs were not commonly taken for routine examinations. Postmortem teeth #2 and #15 display occlusal silver amalgam restorations, whereas the antemortem records indicate these teeth to be unrestored. The presence of these restorations may be explained by unavailability of the pertinent antemortem dental records where such treatment was chronicled. Teeth #1, #2, #9, #11, #15, #20, and #22 were sampled for mitochondrial DNA (mtdna). The same mtdna sequence was obtained from each tooth. Page 3 of 6
