2 Dear Student, WELCOME T0 DENTAL MORPHOLOGY COURSE! I would like to welcome you to the Dental Morphology Course. Dental morphology is a branch of dentistry that provides one of the basic components of skills needed to practice all aspects of dentistry. Without the correct knowledge of tooth morphology it is impossible to accurately replace a tooth or part of it in the oral cavity. Lectures will cover the major aspects of the subject. This, at the same time, means that you are required to put more effort on selfdirected learning strategies. Ultimately, you should be guided to become a lifelong learner. Being aware of the fact that students worry too much about examinations, we have made an effort to disperse the assessment over the whole period. In the section on assessment you will see the details of this process. As a coordinator, I will be there to receive your feedback and comments and to try to resolve any difficulties during the implementation of the course. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time if you need any help. The other staff members teaching the course are also available for any help you may need in case you have subject-related enquiries. I wish you an enjoyable and successful experience with the Dental Morphology Course. The Coordinator 1

4 CURRICULUM MAP INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE Dental morphology is a continuous course that focuses on theoretical knowledge of the anatomy of teeth and related structures and carving of teeth from wax blocks. This course comprises lectures for 1 hour and practical sessions for 2 hours every week. It introduces you to : 1. The oral cavity 2. The morphology and anatomy of each permanent teeth within the oral cavity 3. The inter-arch and intra-arch relationship between the teeth 4. Replicating the anatomy of individual teeth in wax for future application to fixed prosthetics and dental materials. The lecture will stress nomenclature (to learn the language of dentistry) and morphological concepts of the teeth. You need to accurately reproduce the appropriate anatomy in a large sized wax block. These skills are important to future practice of dentistry such as resin and amalgam restorations and to communicate what is right and wrong with the anatomy of crown to your laboratory technician. GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: Apply the terms and expressions used in dental anatomy and morphology with proficiency. Record teeth, using different notations, but with particular emphasis on the method recommended by the International Dental Federation (FDI). Outline the relationship of teeth to one another as well as the relation between the adjacent and opposing teeth Explain the teeth alignments, articulation and the self-protective feature of the dentition. 3

5 Distinguish the morphological characteristics of different kinds of teeth. Thus, there are traits which separate the teeth of the upper from the lower arches, the molars from the incisors and the first molar from the second molar. Restore in casting wax, the full missing surfaces in Dentoform by carving to normal anatomical and morphological features. Develop his/her manual skills by carving in wax the different missing surfaces of all teeth. Outline the alignments, articulations and the self-protective feature of the dentition. Draw to scale two dimensions of all teeth following the lectures outline, using the table of measurements provided. COURSE CONTENTS N.
