2 The New Standard of Care for Implant Supported Overdentures The 2008 Sterngold Implant Symposium will be held at The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and will feature a patient surgery, hands-on session and multiple educational components. The patient surgery will be performed by Dr. Joe Carrick. In addition, the program lineup includes leading clinicians from around the world. Participants will have the opportunity to learn techniques for successful dental implant procedures. A hands-on session is scheduled for May 10, 2008 at 1:45 p.m. For the hands-on portion of the course, participants will learn the step-by-step surgical and prosthetic protocol for the ERA Implant System using synthetic mandibles. Enrollment for the hands-on session will be limited. 3 Mini-Implant Retained, Immediate Load Overdentures for GP s; An Evidence Based / Risk Assessment Protocol There are over 30 Million edentulous patients in the United States today. By incorporating these procedures into your restorative arsenal, you can improve masticatory efficiency affordably and reap significant practice income doing it. Participants will gain an understanding in an evidence based, and risk assessment protocol for this procedure. The unmet need, financial impact on your practice, and marketing will be evaluated. We will also cover treatment planning, surgical procedures, healing and prosthetic sequencing in detail. An optional follow up course is available that include hands on training on simulated mannequins and prosthetic mock ups. Murphy, DDS, FAGD Mark Murphy is a featured presenter for National Dental Network and the National Lab Network, and practices general dentistry part time in Rochester, Michigan. Mark graduated from UDM School of Dentistry in 1981 and continued teaching Anatomy and Crown and Bridge part time for several years. He has served on the Visiting Faculty of The Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education since 1991 and on its Board of Directors and Trustees until taking a position as Director of Professional Relations in Mark has lectured throughout North America on Practice Management, The Philosophy of Dental Practice, Communication, Quality Issues facing Dental Practices and Labs Today, Occlusion, TMD, and Esthetics. Implant-Supported Overdentures: A More Predictable and Satisfying Treatment Option for Totally Edentulous Patients Implant supported overdenture is one of the most cost effective types of treatment for the patients among all of the various implant supported prosthesis. This treatment modality can enhance the quality of life for the fully edentulous patients and add a significant source of new income to dental practices. During this lecture, the restorative dentists will be educated on how to make the implant supported overdenture without generating a lot of expenses for their patients and avoiding high overhead for their practice. Objectives: a. Give a guideline for patient selection, indications and contraindications for Implant-supported overdentures b. Biomechanical analysis of implant-supported overdentures c. Give an attachment selection guideline for implant-supported overdentures d. Describe various occlusal schemes for implant-supported overdentures e. Maximize the communication between dentist and lab technician f. Teach marketing and practice management aspects of implant practice Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: a. Fabricate an implant supported overdenture over following attachment assemblies: 1. Two individual attachments 2. A single bar attachment 3. Multiple bar attachments b. Execute clinical and laboratory steps required in fabricating an implant- supported overdenture c. Know how to set appropriate charges for this type of treatment Hamid R. Shafie, DDS, CAGS Dr. Hamid Shafie received his certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Prosthodontics from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. He is the founder of the Center for Oral Implantology at Johns Hopkins University where he has trained many dentists in different aspects of implant dentistry. Dr. Shafie currently is the President of the American Institute of Implant Dentistry in Washington DC. He is a faculty member
4 of Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Washington Hospital Center, where he teaches postgraduate implantology courses. He is an adjunct faculty member at The Boston University Center for Implantology. In addition, Dr. Shafie is the author of a book on Implant Supported Overdentures published by Blackwell Publishing in He lectures nationally and internationally about innovative aspects of implant dentistry and is renowned for his unique way of making implant dentistry fun to learn for both specialists and general dentists. Computer-Guided Implantology: Evolution of a New Technology Proper positioning of dental implants is integral to the success of implant treatment. Computer-Guided Surgical (CGS) therapy utilizing VIP 3D Software and the CompuGuide Surgical Template System provides the implant surgeon and restorative dentist with new and exciting treatment capabilities. The practitioner can achieve precision case planning as well as accomplish timeefficient and minimally-invasive surgical implant placement. The result is predictable and straightforward prosthetics. Clinical implementation of the techniques as they apply to various clinical situations including application to the immediate load implant case will be addressed and illustrated with live surgical video. Objectives: Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to: understand the treatment protocols necessary to implement CGS therapy in their practice; be familiar with the technical considerations and limitations of CGS; and apply the principles of CGS as it relates to the immediate load implant case. Michael E. Abrams, DDS Michael Abrams is Vice President of ILS. In collaboration with Dr. Klein, Dr. Abrams has co-invented and developed the technology, products and services offered by Implant Logic Systems, Ltd. Dr. Abrams is an experienced periodontist specializing in dental implantology and bone regeneration, and is a nationally recognized speaker on Computer Guided Surgery and Oral Implantology. He is an active member and clinical lecturer for the Second District Dental Society of New York. He is a member of the Academy of Osseointegration and the American Academy of Periodontology. In the 80 s, he was an instructor of Biochemistry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine.
