Successful 57th Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of AADR (Above): Senior dental student Mark Sorensen (right) discusses his poster with Jeremy Goodson (D3). The 57 th Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) was held on February 9, 2010, at the College of Dentistry. The Local Research Day guest speaker (pictured left) was Leslie Winston, DDS (Iowa 88), PhD, who is director, North America Professional and Scientific Relations, Proctor & Gamble Professional Oral Health. Dr. Winston presented Learning to Collaborate. Her talk focused on the importance of collaboration, the increasing emphasis on translational research in the laboratory, and the skills needed to make laboratory research relevant to daily patient care through collaboration. The Local AADR Research Day reception and awards, was held on February 9, 2010, at the Coralville Holiday Inn. Go to pages 2-5 to see a list of student research award winners and photos from Tuesday s poster session. Next week s DSB Weekly will have additional photos taken during the awards banquet. Dr. Gerald Denehy Attends Five-Day Intensive Composite Resin Course in Curitiba, Brazil The Live Healthy Iowa 100 Day Challenge is a teambased weight loss and physical activity program that will assist you and your teammates in making positive changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle. UI Wellness Health Coach, Erin Litton, is the Program Administrator for the Live Healthy UIOWA teams. Contact her at erin-litton@uiowa.edu with questions. Dr. Gerald Denehy, head, Department of Operative Dentistry, spent five days in Curitiba, Brazil, helping with an intensive composite resin course, Mastering Composite Artistry, Creating Restorative Masterpieces. The five-day course was taught by Dr. Newton Fahl (MS, operative dentistry, 89), who is considered one of the top direct resin clinicians in the world. Dr. Fahl has a teaching institute in Curitiba and his classes, which are conducted both in English and Portuguese, involve hands-on training in direct resins. The recent five-day class had attendees from around the world including Dubai, Ireland, Sweden, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Columbia, and the United States. Of the class attendees, three were University of Iowa College of Dentistry graduates: Drs. Carlos Sanchez and his wife, Farzaneh Keshmiri Sanchez (both 91), from North Carolina, and Nicole Weatherington Anderson ( 98), from Madison, Wisconsin. Professional charges not reimbursed to dentists in the U.S.: evidence from Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, Community Dent Health. 2009;26: Saw-Whet Owl Adopted Dr. Deborah Dawson, director of the Biostatistics Unit, and Dows staff members, JoElla Willis, Cindy Asmussen, and Chris White, have adopted a northern saw-whet owl (Aegoliu acadicus) through the Macbride Raptor Project (MRP). The donations of the four bird watchers, along with many other contributors, help fund the Raptor Project s rehabilitation, education, and research programs on behalf of Iowa s birds of prey. The Macbride Nature Recreation Area notified the College of Dentistry birders that their adopted raptor for the year is Petra Owlouicious, a little saw-whet owl. The permanently disabled raptors are housed outdoors near the Macbride Nature Center. The public is welcome to visit. From November to March, the hours are from 9 am-6 pm. From April-October, the hours are 6 am- 8 pm. Tom is trying to acclimate to Iowa s winter climate after moving from Los Angeles when he and Michelle were married. According to Michelle, Tom is suffering through his first winter in over 15 years. 10 Page 10 UI and Palmer College Jaw Pain Study Invites Participants People age 21 or older with chronic jaw pain classified as temporomandibular disorder may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study investigating whether the Activator Chiropractic Technique can reduce head and neck pain and the need for prescription pain medications, and improve quality of life. The collaborative study involves the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science's Dental Clinical Research Center, and the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. Study participants will be randomly assigned to one of four different treatment groups. Participation, including follow-up, will last six months and involves examinations and treatment at the UI Dental Clinical Research Center. Participants assigned to chiropractic care will be referred to a private practice in Coralville. All examinations and treatment are provided free of charge.
