3 London and South East Annual DCP Conference Speaker Biographies Professor Stephen Lambert- Humble MBE Stephen is a Consultant in Dental Public Health, and following a full career in the Royal Navy, he moved sideways from being the Dental Dean for all the Armed Forces, to being appointed as the Dean for KSS. Passionate about lifelong learning and professional development, he was awarded an MBE in the Queen s Birthday Honours in 2012 for services to Dental education. He is also Lead Dean nationally for Dental Care Professionals, is currently working on Dental Apprenticeships for DCPs, Leading the Mouth Care Matters initiative, putting Oral Health back into General Health and is very proud of the team he has the privilege to lead and all their achievements. Jacqui Elsden Jacqui Elsden qualified at Kings College Hospital Dental School in 1983 as a Dental Nurse. She obtained both the Hospital and NEBDN National Certificate and continued as a Senior Dental Nurse at Kings until Jacqui continued to work in general practice until 1988 when she took a three year break to start a family, then continued in general practice until Since 2004, Jacqui has been employed by the post-graduate education and training department of the NHS now known as Health Education England London & South East (LaSE). During this period, she obtained awards in Vocational Assessment, Internal Quality Assurance, Teaching and Mentoring together with Certificates in Practice Appraisal and Radiography.
4 Jacqui has an interest in research and has presented nationally at the Royal College of Surgeons and internationally at the Association of Dental Research in Barcelona and has been published in the dental press. More recently Jacqui has obtained an MSc distinction in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare (Applied Dental Professional Practice) at the University of Kent and was awarded the annual Dissertation prize for the highest achievement. Jacqui is currently a member of BADN and is their Education Representative of the Association s Executive Committee. Jacqui is Chair of NEBDN s Quality Assurance committee and continues her role with LaSE as their Dental Education Facilitator, which includes the role of Learning Set Facilitator and tutor for HEEKSS RCS FGDP Diploma for Clinical Dental Technicians. John Darby John has a considerable breadth of experience in general dental practice extending over 37 years, 35 of those as a practice owner. His six surgery practice in Croydon supported 9 dentists working both full and part time, with a supporting team of hygienist, reception staff, and dental nurses. For much of this time he has been heavily involved with Foundation Training as Training Programme Director and Primary Care Associate Dean in KSS. John has recently become Postgraduate Dental Dean for Thames Valley and Wessex. He is currently course director for the Foundation Degree in Advanced Dental Nursing (University of Kent). He is also the immediate past Chair of the NEBDN Board of Trustees and chaired the working group which developed the new NEBDN Diploma. He has recently completed an MSc. researching the OSCE process established in the NEBDN Diploma (University of Kent). Annabel Brown Following a career as a rhythmic gymnast representing Great Britain at various international competitions, including Commonwealth Games and World Championships; Annabel trained to become a physiotherapist at St George s Hospital Medical School. Once qualified in 2005 Annabel specialised in the rehabilitation of patients with neurological disorders before pursing interests in the area of neuro-palliative rehabilitation. In 2009 Annabel completed an MSc in Palliative Care at King s College London and worked as a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist at the North London Hospice for five years.
5 In 2015 with a desire to have a role in improving the standards of health and social care delivery, Annabel applied for a role as inspector with the Care Quality Commission. On returning from maternity leave Annabel took the opportunity for a position within the Dental inspection team. Annabel is married with one daughter. Her social pursuits include windsurfing, snowboarding, dancing, mindfulness and travel. Sampana Banga Sam has worked in Regulation for ten years joining the Healthcare Commission in 2007 as Head of Region for London and the South East. In 2009, Sam joined the Care Quality Commission where he has worked in the Intelligence directorate before moving to Primary Medical Services. As Head of Inspection, Dentistry. Sam has helped develop the current inspection model for dental service inspection and has geographical responsibility for London and the South o England. Prior to joining the Healthcare Commission Sam spent over 10 years working in Primary Care commissioning and development roles in the NHS, the most recent of which was a as a director of Primary Care in an inner London PCT. Debbie Reed Debbie is the academic Head of the University of Kent s Centre for Professional Practice; a trans-disciplinary academic centre founded on the belief that employers can benefit from academic and research excellence, quality teaching and design, to create positive change and forge new knowledge within organisations. She first qualified as a dental nurse in the Royal Navy in 1987 and has had a long and productive career, and has worked nationally and international during the past 30 years. Debbie was the Chair of the British Dental Nurse Associations (BADN) Executive Committee in and was involved in developing BADN s Educational Strategy; a framework for education, training and on-going career development, to guide and equip DNs to meet the challenges predicted to face the dental workforce in the future.
6 In her current role as an academic, Debbie works collaboratively with employers to create distinct work-related developmental and educational undergraduate and postgraduate solutions, which respond to the unique workforce challenges, both with and outside healthcare. Debbie teaches, publishes and speaks on the Professionalisation agenda; part of an emerging discourse related to the contribution Dental Care Professionals make to the dental workforce. Irene Pepper Irene Pepper is a Senior Dental Nurse with extended duties training in -Topical Fluoride Varnish Application. She works part-time in a General Dental Practice in South East London, which comprises of nine surgeries. She is the nominated staff member responsible for infection control. She has over 30 years experience working in general dental practice. Irene has worked on various training projects with HEEKSS, Eastern and London Postgraduate Dental Deaneries, including DNSTART, DNNET ii, Clinical Dental Technician training as a Senior Learning Set Leader and Clinical Governance projects. Victoria Keats Vicky has been working in dentistry on and off over the last 30 years. After her successful career as a Dental Nurse, she became a Practice Manager and went on to be a member of an investigating committee member for the General Dental Council. Vicky is currently working as an examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses, while continuing working part time as a Dental Nurse. Samantha Bazargan Samantha Bazargan qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1995 gaining the National Certificate. Whilst continuing to work as a dental nurse in general practice for many years Sam studied for her Certificate in Dental Radiography in 2008 and the Certificate in Oral Health Education in 2013.
7 Sam started working part time as a Dental Nurse Tutor in 2004 gaining the City & Guilds Certificate in Further Education Teaching. Starting with a private training provider and eventually gaining employment with the London Deanery post graduate dental department as a DCP Tutor. Sam is currently an examiner for the NEBDN national diploma qualification and in the past was an examiner for the Certificate in Oral Health Education. More recently with a brief stint as a dental nurse tutor for the NVQ at King s College London in 2015 gaining the City & Guilds award in Assessing she is currently employed as a part time dental nurse tutor at the Eastman Dental hospital. Since 2014 Sam has also been employed part time by Health Education England as a DCP Associate Dean. Most recently completing the Post graduate Certificate in Dental Education at the University of Bedford (2017). Lawrence Mudford Lawrence Mudford qualified as a dentist from Cardiff Dental Hospital in 1981 and following a period of time working at the Dental School and within the Community Dental Services in Gwent, entered General Practice in Sussex, becoming a partner at the same practice in He developed an interest in postgraduate education through his involvement as a Vocational Trainer and attained the MGDS RCS (Eng) in 1992 and a Master s degree in Prosthetics in His passion is to see all members of the dental team attain their full potential and teaches extended Scope of Practice courses to support DCP teaching. Lawrence is currently the Course Director for the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology, a Regional Dental Tutor for Health Education: Kent, Surrey and Sussex and serves as a GDC Council member.
