Dr. William Johnson Nominated by the ABE as a Member of the ABE s Review Committee on Endodontics Education During the August meeting of the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Education (CODA), Dr. William Johnson, Department of Endodontics, was nominated by the American Board of Endodontics (ABE) as a member of the ABE s Review Committee on Endodontics Education. Dr. Johnson will serve a four-year term beginning in October Review committees serve as advisory committees to CODA and are comprised of content experts, a general dentist and a public member. Dr. Susan McKernan Receives a CDC Grant September 2, Noon-1 pm, Oral B Classroom Noon Seminar Series: Dr. Robert Cornell, September 6, noon-1 pm, Galagan 14C 6 7 Dr. Susan McKernan, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, has been awarded a one-year, $174,999 Special Interests Projects grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for studies that address oral health and cancer. Dr. McKernan will explore the integration of oral health and primary care. The CDC funding is channeled through the Prevention Research Center based in the College of Public Health. The researchers will conduct an environmental scan of what is currently occurring within state and local governmental and non-profit public health entities surrounding oral health and chronic disease prevention. They will also collect information about how oral health is being included in state and national efforts to reform the U.S. health care system. Examples of medical-dental integration will be identified and best practice approaches will be recommended. Results of the proposed activities will allow policymakers to maximize existing public health resources by addressing common risk factors for non-communicable diseases and oral disease based on evidencebased best practices. Recent national efforts to reform health care delivery provide an ideal opportunity for policymakers to advocate for the inclusion of oral health in these changes. Dr. McKernan will be principal investigator. Dr. Raymond Kuthy, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, is a co-principal investigator, and Dr. Julie Reynolds, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, is a co-investigator. Dr. Arwa Owais Elected as North American Regional Councilor of the IADR Dr. Arwa Owais, Pediatric Dentistry, has been elected as a North American Regional Councilor for the International Association of Dental Research Pediatric Oral Health Research Group. This is a very highly prestigious, competitive and sought-after position. She begins her term immediately.

2 Page 2 An Interview with Dr. Saulo Sousa Melo Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine In July, Dr. Saulo Sousa Melo joined the College of Dentistry as a clinical assistant professor and oral & maxillofacial radiologist. Q: Where were you raised? A: I grew up in Aracaju, on the northeastern coast of Brazil. Q: How did you become interested in dentistry? A: As an orthodontic patient, I was impressed with how the orthodontist could correct my teeth. Q: Where did you attend dental school? A: I received my DDS from Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil, in After that, I received an MSD from Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil in 2010, and a PhD from the University of Campinas, Brazil, in Most recently (spring 2016), I graduated with an MS in oral science and certificate in oral and maxillofacial radiology from the University of Iowa. Q: How did you become interested in oral radiology? A: After taking oral radiology in my third year of dental school, the instructor offered me the opportunity to do some radiology-related research on radiation protection at the local dental offices. The following summer, after an internship at a private radiology clinic, I realized that radiology was the way for me to go, to help others. Q:What brought you to Iowa? A: During my PhD work, I was awarded with a scholarship to conduct part of my thesis research abroad. I came to the University of Louisville (KY) for one year, then returned home to complete the program. But I always wanted to return to the U.S. because of the advanced radiology opportunities and the chance to improve my diagnostic skills. My University of Louisville mentor (Dr. Allan Farman) suggested coming to the University of Iowa to complete a certificate in oral & maxillofacial radiology under Dr. Axel Ruprecht s supervision. I received my certificate this spring. (Dr. Melo was hired to replace Dr. Ruprecht after his retirement.) Q: What are your challenges as a new clinical assistant professor? A: I have some big shoes to fill (with Dr. Ruprecht s retirement)! One goal is to give dental students more opportunity to be in contact with up-to-date technologies (e.g., cone beam computed tomography or CBCT). Besides attending lectures on the foundations of CBCT, dental students are now learning how to use the software, and they are shadowing OMR residents during their CBCT interpretation reports. That way, the dental students can familiarize themselves with the technology and recognize their personal limitations; it is always better to rely on a radiologist s help than to miss something that could potentially jeopardize a patient s health. Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? A: Growing up 10 minutes from the ocean (in Brazil), I do enjoy all of the beach activities. I also like going to the movies, trying local foods, and traveling I ve been to 26 states already and counting!

3 Page 3 Office of Student Affairs Hosts Family Program for D1 Orientation On Friday, August 19, the Office of Student Affairs hosted the Family Program to conclude the D1 Orientation. Parents, spouses and loved ones were greeted by Herky, who enthusiastically welcomed our D1 class. Dean Cathy Solow facilitated the half-day Family Program. Additional faculty and staff supervened the event at the University Club. Dean Johnsen welcomed the group, followed by speeches from UI President Bruce Harreld; Dr. Thomas Peek, Iowa Dental Association; Dr. Sara Stuefen, Iowa Dental Association; and Sean Harvey (D4), president of the Iowa American Student Dental Association. Jan Lawler and Lisa Piper, Dental Administration, coordinated all event logistics. Welcome, D1 students!

The UI College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics Biorepository Advancing Research for Healthy Teeth and Gums Are You Interested in Participating? We will conduct a short interview and collect your biological specimen. Do not eat or drink for 90 minutes prior to your biological specimen collection. Please allow 30 minutes for your specimen collection. All data/biological specimens will be coded, de-identified, and stored in a locked biorepository lab at the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. The specific nature of the research it may be used for will vary but will always relate to health research. Patients will receive a $5 gift card or 4 hours of free parking at the DSB.
