HANCOCK, DDS SYMPOSIUM Greetings from the Dean This year we salute the Howard University College of Dentistry on the 134th anniversary of the College s founding and honor your commitment to support our efforts to provide excellence in education and service to the community. All of our events will be held on the campus of Howard University. We will reunite with our dental, postdoctoral dental, and dental hygiene classes of 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 00, 05 and 10. Alumni who are not listed in the above reunion years are encouraged to join as well. The Hancock Symposium will have two parts: Part I Sleep Bruxism and Associated Orofacial Pain Complaints and Oro-Sleep Medicine Basics for the Dental Practitioner will be presented by Elmer A Villalon, D.M.D., and Part II The abused mouth: from cocaine to methamphetamine, marijuana to bulimia. A stroll through the oral effects of drugs, products, habits and psychoses. will be presented by Jerry E. Bouquot, D.D.S., M.S.D., FAAOMP, DABOMP, FICD, FACD, FADI, FRSM (UK). Know how to interpret the medical history of a patient to determine if an Oro-sleep evaluation is indicated. Determine the difference between various types of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders. Know which co-morbidities are associated with obstructive sleep apnea. Know how to do an Oro-Sleep evaluation. Understand why snoring can be dangerous. 4 About the Presenters. J. E. Bouquot, D.D.S., M.S.D., FAAOMP, DABOMP, FICD, FACD, FADI, FRSM Dr. Bouquot was trained at the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic and the Royal College of Dentistry, Copenhagen, Denmark. For 26 years, he chaired diagnostic science departments in two dental schools: West Virginia University and the University of Texas in Houston. He is co-author of the most popular textbook of oral pathology and has been President of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, a Senior Visiting Scientist of the Mayo Clinic, President of two national oral pathology organizations and Director of the American Cancer Society s national Board of Directors. He has won more than 50 teaching, service and research awards, including the St. George Medal, the highest award given by the American Cancer Society, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Minnesota, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from WVU and the Distinguished Dentist Award from the West Virginia Dental Association. He has published more than 320 papers, abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Bouquot s precancer, oral disease epidemiology and bone research has been cited thousands of times in the literature. He has received a NIH grant to study HPV and has given more than 1,200 research and continuing education presentations in more than 30 countries. In his seminars, he emphasizes clinical features of disease, differential diagnosis and disease management, with much practical information based on his lifetime experience in an active clinical oral pathology (oral medicine) practice and one of the nation s largest oral pathology biopsy services. He manages the two most popular oral pathology websites, which received 4.4 million hits last year. His Bouquot to Go Power Point presentations of disease are used by thousands of dental professionals worldwide. Elmer A. Villalon, D.M.D. Elmer A. Villalon, D.M.D. is a 1984 graduate of Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine, formerly the Elmer University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. After completing dental school he then completed 2 years of training in the management of orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. He presently has a broad based general dental medicine practice which has an emphasis in the management of Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders and Oro- Sleep Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. He served 3 years as a council member of the AAOP and has served on numerous committees for the Academy. He presently is an oral board examiner of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and recently was appointed as a visiting faculty member at the UCLA School of Dental Medicine for the department of Oral Medicine section of Orofacial Pain and Sleep Medicine. He is the founder of the Pueblo Association for Interests in Neuroscience and TMD Study (P.A.I.N. and TMD Study), a dental and adjunct health care provider study club which hosts nationally recognized lecturers who lecture on topics of orofacial pain, headache, sleep medicine, dental management of Medically Complex patients, head and neck cancer and temporomandibular disorders. He has been married for 33 years to his wife Sharon and they have 2 children, James and Elizabeth. James is a 4 th year dental student at Howard School of Dental Medicine and Elizabeth is beginning her 1 st year of dental school also at Howard School of Dental Medicine.
