5 Introduction Periodontal diseases are a common cause of tooth loss after the age of 35 Most elderly Americans use many medicines; some of these can cause dry mouth The American Dental Association has reported that: 70% of older adults require any dental 95% of people over 65 have periodontal disease

8 Changes in the mouth during Alteration or loss of taste It is a normal change over time the aging process Medications and certain diseases increase the incidence of loss of taste Removable dentures can cause discomfort and alter taste

9 Changes in the mouth during DRY MOUTH (XEROSTOMIA) the aging process The flow of saliva decreases with age because of certain medical conditions and the use of some medications Chemotherapy, psychological conditions, endocrine and nutritional disorders cause the same Removable dentures that are not well adapted and cause discomfort Increased plaque formation and loss of tooth structure Increases the risk of periodontal disease

10 Periodontal Disease The term periodontal disease refers to a group of inflammatory conditions affecting the tooth supporting tissue, gingiva, periodontal ligament and bone It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults Mainly caused by the bacteria in plaque The two most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis

11 Gingivitis The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis It is often characterized by bleeding, tenderness and swelling and redness in the gums You can use a toothpaste or mouthwash to help reduce bleeding and inflammation in mild gingivitis

12 Periodontitis More advanced stage of gum disease involving bone and ligament surrounding the teeth If not treated, can damage the bone and supporting tissues The gum is removed from the tooth and bone level deteriorates It is the cause of tooth mobility in elderly

13 Symptoms of periodontal Bad breath disease Dull yellow discoloration of teeth and gum edges, especially in molars and premolars Edges of the red gums Receding gums leaving exposed the roots of the teeth Difficulty in chewing Pain

14 Treatment The main goal is to control the infection. The treatment may be: Perform deep cleaning Use of medications Surgical treatments
