Just two thousandths of slot deviation (common with many appliances in the market today) can eliminate the torque potential of your system when using popular finishing wire sizes. Additionally, undersized rectangular wire engagement is often characterized as providing 0 degrees of actual torque expression. Most torquing applications can be performed using less than full size archwires relative to the bracket slot. This allows for easier wire insertion and a reduction in applied forces. Yet these choices ultimately have a profound affect on archform, arch length, anchorage requirements, interactions with the bracket prescription, extraction verses non-extraction therapy, class I molar relationships and so on. Our goal in providing this guide is to provide the framework for informed choice. We offer one of the broadest selections of torque, offset, and tube configurations in the industry. Our goal? To meet the treatment objectives of all orthodontists, regardless of technique or preference. We invite you to call us directly with your questions. We feel, as you certainly do, that this is one of the most important decisions to be made in selecting the proper appliance. And we thank you for choosing us to provide it. 1 Higher torque values are associated with a greater lingual inclination and may reduce arch width and length. It is increasingly popular to see increased torques in the upper to reduce dangling cusps and decreased torque in the lowers to promote more upright posterior segments. SELECT THE PROPER TORQUE -0 Promotes free sliding and offers the most upright inclination possible. -10 The most common upper 1st and 2nd molar torques for Roth and MBT Rx. -14 A increasingly popular choice for the upper arch. Promotes a more pronounced lingual orientation. 2 Anti-rotational distal offsets are designed to rotate the buccal surfaces of molars distally (see illustration opposite page). They are especially helpful to counteract the effects of heavy class II elastics or springs but can also promote a lingual crown orientation. It is common to see higher offsets in the upper arch and little or no offset in the lower arch. SELECT THE PROPER OFFSET 0 Promotes more upright posterior segments and free sliding without binding. Most popular in the MBT lower 1st molar Rx. 5 The most common lower 1st molar Rx. Modest yet effective anti-rotation effects without excessive lower lingual inclination. -20 A popular choice with MBT users for the lower arch. Promotes upright posterior segments, especially when combined with a 0 degree offset. 8 The most common upper offset. They will reduce the incidence of dangling cusps and mesh ideally with 0 and 5 degree lower offsets. -25 This Roth Rx is still the most common lower torque value for both 1st and 2nd molars. 12 This high offset is recommended only for the upper arch and promotes a pronounced lingual inclination. CONVERTIBLE -VS- NON-CONVERTIBLE Convertible This design is important if you experience difficulty when inserting large finishing wires into 2nd molar tubes. They can also be ligated when necessary with conventional elastics or ligature wires. They are by far the most popular choice for 1st molars. Non-Convertible These tubes are smaller and more rounded for patient comfort. Bondable non-convertible singles are quickly replacing second molar bands and can be effectively used on first molars when your only requirement is a hook for class II auxiliaries. 42

47 DIRECT BOND BUCCAL TUBES 4PAD DESIGN: INDENTED -VS- NON-INDENTED Either the cast tube or the bonding pad can be flat (non-indented) or offer a pronounced dimple that fits into the buccal groove of molars (indented). Indented The most popular style. The bonding pad will adapt more easily to the crown to promote seating and placement. Fully seating the bracket into the buccal groove also reduces the potential for trapping bacteria or bond failure should the adhesive wash out during treatment. Non-Indented These pad types allow the clinician to seat the bondable assemble in any position, such as mesial to enhance the offset or on the lower gingival margin to reduce interferences. Non-dimpled pads are also generally larger and cover more tooth surface verses dimpled pads. 5HEADGEAR OPTIONS Occlusal: This is by far the most popular option. Clinicians have the option of placing class II corrective devises in occlusal tubes and they reduce the risk of gingival impingement and patient discomfort. The headgear bow also has less opportunity to interfere with elastics or inflame swollen gingival tissues. Gingival: This headgear tube placement has the advantage of being much closer to the center of resistance of molars and should provide more efficient distalization. They will also reduce the risk of posterior occlusal interferences..045 vs..051 Tubes: The overwhelming majority of headgears are.045 in diameter. There appears to be no clinical advantage to either design except that the.051 style is not offered by many companies. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF MESIAL/DISTAL TUBE POSITIONING ON MECHANICS? 6 Positioning is an important variable in both bonding and welding attachments. Non-indented bonding pads will offer the greatest flexibility in placement. We can also custom weld to your specifications based on the considerations listed below. We can also suggest preadjustments that best fit your needs If you routinely require custom welding and repositioning of molar bonds. Standard Two millimeters of forward (mesial) placement of the buccal tube on the band will add approximately 10 degrees of distal offset. Mesial 1/ The standard welding position is designed to deliver the distal offset manufactured into the buccal tube.
