2 Overview The 4 th William H Bell Northeast Orthognathic Symposium features outstanding faculty in the field of orthognathic surgery. Dr. Bryan Bell will highlight the contribution of William H. Bell to the field of orthognathic surgery. Faculty will address the spectrum of care, including contemporary approaches to orthodontics, computer-assisted planning, surgical techniques and adjunctive esthetic surgery. Physicians and orthodontists who manage facial trauma and deformities will find this Symposium offers contemporary evidence-based treatment strategies. The Symposium provides lectures and discussion time with ample opportunity for audience interaction. Target Audience This CME course is designed for residents, fellows and practicing physicians in the specialties of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Orthodontics and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery who desire a refresher of the fundamentals and a clinical update of best practices. Needs Assessment Advancements in imaging, devices and techniques have created improvements in the care and outcomes for patients with facial traumas and deformities. These advancements require physicians to expand their knowledge, update their care algorithms and consider new technologies in their practice setting. Practice Gaps Optimum practice reflects the incorporation of evidence based algorithms, which include the consideration of conventional and new surgical and orthodontic strategies, and the appropriate use of technological advancements in imaging and devices. Currently, some physicians may not be aware of expanded choices in care, and therefore may be missing opportunities to provide better patient outcomes. Objectives Upon completion of this course, physicians will be able to: 1. Discuss the contributions made by William H. Bell to the field of orthognathic surgery. 2. Delineate care algorithms for managing patients with facial trauma and deformity, including evidence for orthodontics-first and surgery-first approaches. 3. Review dentofacial deformity and presurgical orthodontics. 4. Assess the incorporation of advanced technologies to improve diagnosis and treatment; such as virtual surgical planning, computer- assisted imaging software, techniques and devices. 5. Discuss fixation of the sagittal split ramus osteotomy and mandibular narrowing. 6. Describe steps to prevent complications and improve outcomes in orthognathic surgery. 7. Discuss the advantages and patient outcomes related to adjunctive esthetic surgery.
