Persky, MD Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Co-Director, Head and Neck Institute COURSE DESCRIPTION The oral cavity is the most common site for cancer to develop within the upper aerodigestive tract. The majority are squamous cell carcinomas and often their development is preceded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) such as leukoplakia or erythroplakia. This course will examine the entire spectrum of oral cavity carcinomas and OPMDs including epidemiology, etiology, evaluation, treatment strategies (including surgery, reconstructive options, radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted/ immunotherapy regimens), treatment-related complications, and post-treatment surveillance. The goal of this course is to foster cooperative multidisciplinary and interprofessional care in order to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life. It will include presentation of pertinent topics as well as audience interactive panel discussions of timely and controversial issues. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES After participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to: Describe the current classification of oral cancer and OPMDs Recognize and evaluate the most recent trends in the epidemiology of oral cancer and OPMDs, including risk factors Determine how to translate the latest omics research (genomics and others) into practice Recognize the variable clinical presentations of oral cancer and OPMDs Implement clinical algorithms for the diagnosis of OPMDs and the evidence for the use of diagnostic adjuncts Integrate pathologic and contemporary imaging parameters to facilitate staging (i.e. utilizing recently updated AJCC staging criteria) Describe the various protocols of adjuvant treatment and recognize the indication for adjuvant therapy Describe the acute and long term consequences of oral cavity surgery and the various modes of adjuvant treatment Recognize the need for multidisciplinary reconstructive expertise with diverse experience in complex compound flap reconstructive methods Provide patient supportive personnel to optimize post-treatment oral/swallowing function and quality of life
