1 South Central College: Dental Assisting - Associate of Applied Science Degree Waiver Rationale The goal of the Dental Assisting program is to provide opportunities for the student to develop a sound fundamental background for the practice of dental assisting by identifying and integrating the curricula to support the outcome of a professional member of the dental health team. The program promotes knowledge which is grounded and reinforces the comprehensive retention of new material being presented with greater application to build basic knowledge though the use of additional applications incorporated throughout the program. This allows for the retention of basic knowledge and skills through continuous application resulting in the development of advanced techniques and the building of the concept of continuous learning allowing for industry growth in requiring professional expansion of technology and skills. The South Central College dental assisting program offers courses beyond what many colleges are offering with the 60 credit program. The Dental Assisting AAS degree is a 63 credit program comprising of 43 dental assisting credits, 3 technical credits (CPR, First Aid and Safety) and 17 liberal art credits. The Dental Assisting program was redesigned from an eleven month program with two semesters and two summer sessions to a four semester, one summer session program reformatting existing courses and incorporating liberal art courses in the curricula. The changes include a reduction in the number of liberal arts credits from 20 credits to 17 credits to include the elimination of one course with materials cover in other courses. The South Central College dental assisting program focus is within the perimeters of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation national specialized program accreditation requirements of clinical and behavior sciences which mandates a specific direction of selected liberal arts. Specific courses that address accreditation requirements are as follows: psychology, interpersonal communications and ethics. The liberal art courses required for the dental assisting program are directly linked to the nationally required clinical and behavioral sciences within the designated program format and to the dental assisting student learning outcomes. Utilization of the correlation within the dental assisting program demonstrates an effectiveness in creating an academic environment that support ethical and professional responsibility. Dental Assisting Program Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate practical application of infection control, biohazards/quality assurance procedures, and treatment area maintenance. 2. Demonstrate skills in patient preparation, including health data and charting, accurate patient records, tray setups, unit preparation and medical emergency situations. 3. Apply current dental assisting concepts and techniques through competency skill levels and clinical/laboratory dental assisting, radiology, expanded functions, general and specialty dental procedures. 4. Demonstrate competency / skill in business office procedures and equipment, dental practice management systems, and financial transactions including oral /written communication.
2 The Dental Assisting student learning outcomes listed show the correlation of the required liberal arts: Philosophy 100, Communication 140 and English 100 are linked to student learning outcomes #2 and #4 through accurate patient preparation, accurate patient records and business office procedures; Math 115 to student learning outcome #4 business and financial transactions; and Goal area 3 Psychology to student learning outcome #2 and #4 demonstrating patient and dental practice management. Based on a comparative analysis of all technical and liberal art courses within the MnSCU AAS Dental Assisting programs, the average liberal art course range varied from 15 to 20 credits. The liberal arts courses have limited access to transferable credits within the MnSCU goal areas. Parameters for liberal art courses are limited to 3 and 4 credits. The 63 credit curricula results in a reduced credit load for students generating the ability for time and life management skills resulting in increased retention of students. The formatting of the curricula allows for educational growth within the program for new professional expansion of technology and skills expansion within the profession for extended job exposure and placement. Students who graduate from the dental assisting program are eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board, INC. certification examination and the Minnesota state licensure examination allowing them to apply to the Minnesota Board of Dentistry for licensure to practice dental assisting. Dental Assisting Program Description The Dental Assisting curriculum is designed to provide opportunities for the student to develop a sound fundamental background for the practice of dental assisting. The specialized knowledge in the field of dental assisting prepares the student and graduate to contribute to the world of dentistry for today's changing environment. This program identifies necessary competencies and integrates the curricula to support these outcomes to produce a dental assistant who is a vital member of the dental health team. The student will become grounded and prepared to function as a Chairside and Expanded Functions clinician, a Business/Office Dental Assistant and a Laboratory Dental Assistant. Graduates of the program are capable of practicing in a general dental practice or in a dental specialty. Progression through the program is sequential. Due to the limited amount of space in the clinical area, students will be admitted on space available basis. Successful completion of all courses in the dental assisting program require passing with a C/2.0 GPA or above. The program is designed to meet the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation Standard for Dental Assisting with the clinical skills and competencies as designated by the State Dental Practice Act of Minnesota State Board of Dentistry. A unique aspect of the South Central College's Dental Assisting program is its
3 location on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus in a newly refurbished 12-unit dental clinic, with restorative facilities, shared by MSU's Dental Hygiene program. Program Delivery: Students will be admitted Fall Semester of each year. Basic Entrance Requirements Due to accreditation regulations, only students who have a high school diploma or GED and are over the age of 18 are eligible for admission to this program.

Discussion regarding # of grads who are employed: enrollment needs to be high enough to be financially responsible. 55 applicants, see attachment d. Current program (Curriculum) i. 60/120 program reductions or waiver for AAS degree with the DA program Waiver: (MnSCU) Legislature pushing all programs are to be at 60/120 credits to keep costs down and time in college lower for students. AAS most common for CC colleges such as SCC, requests these programs be at 60 or file for a waiver. Most technical programs cannot reduce anymore content so waivers are needed for these programs. 66 credits yesterday, down to credits by reducing LAS content. Input from members needed for the waiver: maintained soft skills courses, kept Comp 100, ethics, math, speech, and Psychology (Goal area #3), eliminated Sociology (Goal area #5). We have removed as much LAS as possible, cannot remove any technical content. Members agree that the waiver understood and the program should go forth with the waiver process. Members agreed not to remove any technical content, all is necessary. ii. 2 year Scope of Program: stretched out to 2 years, allows students to have life outside of school 4 semesters and 1 short summer internship. 4.
