This program examines trends in disease management and suggests how dental professionals can connect the dots between oral and overall health, and proactively guide patients toward reducing their

2 22 nd ANNUAL DENTAL HYGIENE LECTURE Course Description Morning session: Current evidence suggests that common risk factors are shared between cancer, chronic illnesses and periodontal diseases. However, how do clinicians determine hype versus science? What role does inflammation play in disease development? This program examines trends in disease management and suggests how dental professionals can connect the dots between oral and overall health, and proactively guide patients toward reducing their risks. Afternoon session: New technologies, practice standards, and approaches to person-centered care are providing enhanced options for treating patients with periodontal disease. Approximately 1/3 of the adult population has a genetic variation for periodontal disease and current studies estimate that 50% of disease progression is related to genetic differences. Using a person-centered approach with tailored risk assessments and salivary diagnostics can identify specific pathogens implicated in periodontal disease and genetic variations that can impact susceptibility. Emerging technologies including sub-gingival air polishing devices are accompanying improved approaches to care by targeting and removing diseasecausing biofilms that harbor dangerous pathogens. Today, clinicians can personalize care and target pathogenic biofilms using a shift in protocols that includes incorporation of new technologies and a holistic approach to care. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: 1. Identify how inflammation influences disease initiation and progression. 2. Differentiate between periodontal pathogens, diet, genetic influences and lifestyle choices. 3. Guide patients toward strategies to take ownership of their health. 4. Explain why pathogenic biofilm is an enemy to health. 5. Describe how DNA information can alter periodontal care. 6. Discover the science and safety of subgingival air polishing. 7. Recognize how to shift paradigms and clinical protocols to manage biofilm. 8. Define methods to personalize treatment. She is an international speaker and practices dental hygiene in Dallas, Texas. No refunds will be issued after Friday, April 13, The UNC School of Dentistry Continuing Dental Education Program cannot be responsible for the refund of any part of the registration fee as a result of emergencies, unforeseen circumstances, or events beyond its control after the cancellation date. The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances.
