Wa Technical College *Seattle Central Community College Shoreline Community College **Yakima Valley Community College Dental Hygiene in WA PIMA Institute = Proprietary School -- 3 year program, prerequisites imbedded into the program no degree awarded *Offer a Bachelor s degree **In the Process of completing approval for Bachelor s degree
3 Employment Venues for RDHs Current graduates = approximately 200/year Employed primarily in private dental practices Work 2 to 3 days a week in several offices to make up a full 5 day work week No benefits (medical, vacation, holiday pay, sick leave, pregnancy leave with pay, etc.) Supervision requirements = Close = Dentist is physically in the office General = Dentist does not have to be physically present; patients of record; diagnosed by dentist
4 Alternative Practice for RDHs (Requires 2 years clinical experience) Settings include: Nursing homes, assisted living homes, Sr. Centers, group homes, state operated institutions, homebound patients if delegated by a dentist School based programs sealants, cleanings, fluoride application Hospitals Collaborative Supervision Written Practice Agreement with a WA licensed dentist; offsite; performing authorized dental hygiene services without dental supervision Limited procedures no Local Anesthetic or Nitrous Oxide delivery; no diagnosis of dental treatment
5 Licensing for RDHs Graduate from a CODA accredited program Complete the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam 8 hour exam Complete the WA Law and Jurisprudence Written Exam Complete 3 clinical exams WREB Clinical on a patient Restorative on Typodont teeth Local Anesthesia on a patient and a Written Exam
6 Scope of Practice for an RDH Chapter RCW Defines functions that may and may not be performed by licensed RDHs Defines level and type of supervision required Reviewed and updated Changes require a Legislative change
7 Supervision Created 110 years ago by Dr. Alfred Fones Taught his cousin, Irene Newman, to clean the visible deposit off patient s teeth took too long for him to do it They went on to create the profession of dental hygiene and instituted a school to teach this skill The elements of Supervision have remained in place since that time and changed little
8 Dental Therapist A member of the dental team who provides preventive and restorative care; practices in conjunction with a dentist and is under Personal Direct Supervision Indirect Supervision or General Supervision Collaborative Management agreement Specific, limited scope of practice including cavity preparation and placing fillings, extractions, pulp caps on primary teeth, temporary crowns, etc.
9 Dental Therapists Training programs are Accredited by CODA All CODA programs specify the foundational education is to be a Registered Dental Hygienist Duties include the scope of practice of a Dental Hygienist as well as the duties allowed to Dental Therapists Therapist duties can be determined by the Collaborative Dentist

Do we have the workforce to provide more and better care? Do we have the willingness to deliver care in new and innovative ways? What is in our way of changing?
