Difficult patient due to age, language barrier and attention span. This experience helped me better understand patient management. L.T. II III 4/26/07 Caucasian 29, Early adulthood Assessments, OHI (Stillmans), probe evaluation, hand scaling, 2% NaF. There were no surprises with this patient, the appointment went smoothly. I learned that although the focus is on removing subgingival calculus, one should not forget the supragingival plaque. T.S. II III 5/10/07 Caucasian 37, Early adulthood Assessments, OHI (Stillmans/floss pick), hand scaling, coronal polish, 2% NaF. This patient was late twice, so I learned how to be efficient with my time. I also learned how to instrument on a patient with strong cheek muscles. A.T. III III 6/19/07 Middle Eastern 31, Early adulthood Assessments, OHI (power TB, floss), hand scaling. Patient may have aggressive periodontitis and has been referred to UCSF/private practice for a perio evaluation. This experience taught me how to work with a high maintenance patient with hypersalivation, 4-6mm pockets, heavy bleeding and heavy calculus on the lingual anteriors. J.D. The patient is very nice but somewhat difficult to work with due to memory problems, which make it hard for the patient to focus his thoughts. This case has given me a better idea of what deep subgingival calculus feels like and the kind of firm working stroke that is needed to remove it. M.K. 2 very healthy and cooperative. The patient had toothbrush abrasion and needed to be educated on technique. He also had light subgingival calculus and moderate supragingival calculus on the lingual anteriors. R.S II III 7/25/07 Caucasian 57, Adulthood Medically compromised competency. Assessments, FMX, OHI (Bass). This patient suffers from a number of ailments including depression, recent hip replacement that resulted in a staph infection, arthritis, high cholesterol, apnea, and anemia. He takes ~10 different medications. I have realized the challenges that go along with working on a medically compromised patient e.g. the health history takes longer, the patient may need more breaks, chair positioning considerations, etc. M.O. I IV 7/26/07 Caucasian 23, Early adulthood Assessments, FMX, OHI (Bass). This patient had good OHI but accumulated a moderate amount of subgingival calculus on her mandible. The calculus was fairly easy to remove. This patient required frequent restroom breaks. J.A II III 10/8/07 Caucasian 60, Adulthood Assessments, OHI (Bass). The patient late and seemed unmotivated about his oral health (plaque/caries) until the last appointment and scheduled a DDS appointment. Patient management and motivation were important lessons. Hard calculus that required new instrumentation techniques (toe down, flipped end). Pt. was very O.F III III 10/30/07 African American 39, Adulthood Assessments, OHI Stillman s, floss technique, BWX. 3 restoration with this patient. Patient cancelled and came late. K.J. I II 11/13/07 Caucasian 17, Adolescent Adolescent competency. Assessments, OHI (Bass), floss technique, nutrition, caries risk. Required M.D. clearance for antibiotic premed for heart murmur. A.H. II III 11/15/07 Caucasian 29, Early adulthood Assessments, OHI (Stillman s), floss technique. Patient was sensitive and had generalized recession. Advised patient about sensitivity TP and F rinse for recession sensitivity. Also, advised patient about smoking cessation options. Used USS on lower anteriors. V.M I III 11/21/07 Hispanic 27, Early adulthood Assessments, OHI (Bass), floss technique. Patient was 5 mos. pregnant and incredibly sensitive. Bled profusely. Had to schedule 2 nd appointment due to sensitivity. Patient was V.C I V 11/28/07 Hispanic 26, Early adulthood Mock board patient. Assessments, OHI (Bass), floss technique, FMX, S/RP with LA.
