2 PROJECT UPDATE Over the past 6 months, a great deal of progress has been made on the Digital Dentistry Curriculum Initiative. The project is currently in the piloting phase and looking forward to the public launch of the curriculum in April This collaboration with Henry Schein, Inc. (HSI) continues to work towards the common goal of improving dental education and elevating both the academic and practicing communities adoption of digital solutions that improve workflow efficiencies and enhance the patient experience. Serving as an ACP pilot school has helped propel our digital initiative forward by providing us a solid basis to develop our curriculum, clinical workflows and outcome assessment tools. The communication and collaboration that is occurring has engaged faculty, students, and residents in a most positive way. pilot school representative 2 Prepared by Association Development Solutions

3 ACCOMPLISHMENTS & PRIORITIES august december 2015 completed january december 2016 completed Recruit four member Task Force to lead curriculum Development Team Conduct a digital dentistry survey among ACP members to better understand the scope, engagement, and adoption of digital dentistry Public announcement of ACPEF and Henry Schein relationship at the ACP Annual Session and to the wider dental community Identify and recruit initial Curriculum Development Team to create curriculum in 2016 and early 2017 Curriculum Development Team summit to outline curriculum Presentation of curriculum outline and workshop with attendees at the Spring Dental Educators meeting with 110+ educators from 57 of the 65 dental schools Recruitment of additional volunteers for Curriculum Development Team and split into work groups to create first curriculum draft Publication of Defining Digital Dentistry: A Survey of Recent Literature, a digital dentistry abstract compilation with contributions from five journals to provide the community with a collection of the science on digital dentistry Publication of The Current Impact of Digital Technology on Prosthodontics, a white paper to validate why digital dentistry should be adopted Presentation of first curriculum draft to 173 educators from institutions around the world at the Fall Dental Educators Meeting ADEA Dean s meeting presentation on project and call for pilot schools Promotional efforts to inform the dental community of accomplishments in 2016 Prepared by Association Development Solutions 3

5 CALL FOR PILOT SCHOOLS Purpose of the pilot program: Test the digital dentistry curriculum and further refine before becoming an available resource to dental institutions nationwide. Sixteen schools applied and completed an assessment. Five institutions were selected and paired with a mentor. pilot school selections A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health UCLA School of Dentistry Rutgers School of Dental Medicine University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine mentor group Dr. Fatemeh Afshari University of Illinois at Chicago Dr. Gerald Grant University of Louisville Dr. Mark Ludlow Medical University of South Carolina Dr. Keith Mays University of Minnesota Dr. Ramtin Sadid-Zadeh SUNY at Buffalo CODA NEWS Following a year of public comment, the Commission on Dental Accreditation adopted/approved the proposed changes to the Advanced Prosthodontic Accreditation Standards at its summer meeting for a July 1, 2018 Implementation date. The new accreditation standards mandate that all students/residents will be taught at the in-depth level didactically. Students/residents must also graduate competent in the application of digital dentistry as it relates to planning, design, provision of restorations, and the replacement of missing teeth and associated structure applying digital technologies. 6 PILOT SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS A.T. Still University, Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health The Digital Curriculum document is an excellent resource to direct and expand digital dentistry efforts. As a pilot school, have met more regularly as a group of digital influencers to formalize digital dentistry efforts. Vet thoughts with the entire group for immediate and long-term future decisions. Fueled to develop more high-quality content for their own purposes. Rutgers School of Dental Medicine pre-doctoral education Twelve intra-oral scanners with Compare self-assessment software delivered in pre-clinical simulation laboratory Faculty training completed CAD/CAD Lab is under construction advanced specialty education programs Two 3Shape intra-oral scanners for post-doctoral clinics school wide purchased Integration of digital technology in the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Prosthodontics through collaboration with Stoneglass Industries AU Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine Center for Implant and Digital Technology Working Group established Digital curriculum implementation: Class of 2021 full course integration with simultaneous training of all other classes Dental Anatomy, Operative Dentistry, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics years 1 and 2 Advanced Esthetic Concept and Implant courses year 3 Integration of axium in all aspects preclinic and clinic Core Faculty Champions trained and Digital Study Club formed Communication Plan developed and implemented Digital Dentistry integrated in Graduate Prosthodontics and GPR 8 Scanners/Laptops for Preclinic, 3 Emerald scanners for Clinic 6 Prepared by Association Development Solutions

7 UCLA School of Dentistry The establishment of the IT infrastructure for a robust, cross-disciplinary integrated digital dentistry identified as a schoolwide strategic imperative. The Dean has allocated significant space and financial resources to create a modern, state of the art digital dentistry center. A schoolwide committee, led by Ben Wu, has been formed to make the final recommendations for the digital center, equipment selected, the curriculum changes, and the research opportunities. University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Successfully navigated IT challenges including connectivity, obtaining licenses and workflow. Began training of faculty despite delays during summer due to late arrival and setup of equipment. Established open communication channels between vendor(s) and school to install equipment and software. The digital dentistry initiative is an exciting way to transition students and faculty alike into a new era of digital dentistry and it has been my pleasure to be a part of the pilot initiative. Having conducted research in digital technology application for clinical purposes, I can say that I am excited to see the digital curriculum expand in both pre-clinical and clinical settings. As the digital curriculum matures at the school, I believe this educational exposure will help to generate critically thinking dentists who are both competent at using digital technology as well as open to embracing new technological advances when they graduate and enter the work force. pilot school student Prepared by Association Development Solutions 7
