He completed the program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Wright Patterson and was in active duty in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, serving as Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Ramstein AFB in Germany. Dr. Thikkurissy obtained his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Master s Degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry/Nationwide Children's Hospital. He was Director of the Predoctoral Program in Pediatric Dentistry from and Director of Inpatient Dental Services at Nationwide Children's Hospital from Dr. Thikkurissy is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, serves as current chair of the AAPD Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, and is the AAPD representative on the ADA Committee on Dental Education and Licensure group on Sedation. He has also published in the areas of morbidities, quality of life, and pain management in children. Overview The spectrum of pharmacologic behavior guidance techniques in pediatric dentistry includes procedural sedation. In the morning session, Dr. Thikkurissy will outline the current state of procedural sedation in pediatric dentistry, including potential legislative and practice act changes that may impact HOW we sedate, train and document. The remainder of the morning will be spent covering, in a decision tree-fashion, which child may be appropriate for procedural sedation and which child may present a lower chance of success. Literature on behavioral development and sedation morbidity will be examined. He will also examine the possibly fading role of passive immobilization/ the papoose board in pediatric dentistry. Transitioning into the afternoon, Dr. Thikkurissy will focus on: the specific points in successfully completing a procedural sedation; local anesthetic toxicity and techniques; formalizing pre-sedation evaluations and preparation of the operatory for sedation. Closing out the session, he will do an indepth examination of physiologic monitors and show how to identify the numbers in an integrative manner. Cases of sedation morbidity have been widely reported in which the child s distress and compromise was not recognized until it was too late. This workshop will utilize 20 case based scenarios to outline recognition, assessment and management in 4 topical areas: Respiratory Depression, Anaphylaxis/Allergy, Airway Obstruction and Utilization of the Dental Team. The last topic will specifically examine risk management principles in how your office should be set up and how your staff should be deployed in an emergency. Attendees will utilize Turning Point audience participation technology to collectively walk through scenarios with Dr. Thikkurissy facilitating discussion and highlighting key concepts for understanding. Attendees should be able to incorporate scenarios into their staff huddles to keep the entire office one step ahead of a medical emergency.
