3 FOREWORD TO THE DELEGATES Dear Colleagues, Implant dentistry is taught in many academic institutions in Europe and US, both clinically and scientifically. However, in most cases the number of students enrolled remain limited to a few selected residents who have to follow Full-time program that stretches over a minimum of two years. For the students from overseas, the proposed length of stay outside their homeland where their practices are located and the overall financial commitments are frequently dissuasive factors. On the other hand, there are an increasing number of two to four-day courses, that are essentially organized and promoted by implant manufacturers. These courses focus mainly on the technical aspects of a particular implant system, with the motive of selling the system. Lille II University Medical School, was the first worldwide academic institution that created in 1986, simultaneously an independent University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Implant Surgery and two official post graduate diplome in implant and reconstruction surgery. I had the great honor of being at the origin of both these Creations. With the marked increase in life expectancy of our patients, it soon became clear to me that mastery of the surgical and prosthetic phases of contemporary implantology had a relatively limited influence on the mid term (15 years) and long term (beyond 20 years) success rate of the procedures, if they did not accompany the full understanding of the basic applied medical sciences. The study of such basic sciences including anatomy, bone and periosteal histo-physiology and metabolism, radiology, anesthesiology, general health and medical evaluation of the patients, management of complications had to become an integral part of a credible teaching program. My aim is to bring all these aspects of contemporary implant and reconstructive surgery to India. The didactic program has been meticulously prepared to cover all aspects of the basic and clinical sciences related to this developing discipline. The clinical program has been divided into two distinct parts with the obligation for the students to carry out a minimum number of surgeries on their own patients under the strict supervision of experienced teachers. The first portion will cover successively all the surgical and prosthetic procedures available routinely to a dental or oral surgeon at his or her dental practice. The second portion will cover the more sophisticated surgical techniques requiring bone and soft tissues manipulation and reconstruction in hospital environment. This part will be taught in the second portion of the curriculum (Fellowship Year) to a limited number of students who will have successfully completed the first year program. Furthermore, during this year, the Fellow students may be allowed to join the residents of Lille II University in France and attend some of the courses (advance clinical anatomy and cadaver dissection) that may not be available in India. In conclusion, through this ambitious program, my wish is to bring to India my thirty eight years of academic experience of comprehensive and multidisciplinary implant and reconstructive surgery and help to train the implant surgeons of tomorrow who will be capable of utilizing any implant system of their choice and managing any complication that might arise. He is an HHonored Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the Past President of the Board of Governors of AAID Research Foundation. He is affiliated with a large number of scientific associations in implantology, maxillofacial surgery, anatomy, radiology and physiology. He has been President, Scientific Chairman and keynote speaker in over 156 international scientific meetings. Professor CHANAVAZ has also over the years published two university text books, one on Serial Anatomy of Head and Neck and another on Medical Evaluation of Patients Prior to Invasive Dental Procedures and over 88 papers of which 52 have been based on implant related topics. His research on Quantification of Periosteal Blood Supply won him a national scientific award in In 2002 he received an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeon of England (Faculty of General Dental Practitioners) in recognition of his collaboration with the Faculty since 1996.
