Raoul Kirschbaum climbed from the smoking wreckage of the time machine. He looked at the control panel. It read 20 February but the year was broken. This would be hard to fix. What year was it? He had set the machine for Random Presidents Day, planning to take his father s invention for a quick trip before his parents woke up and found out. And now this! He walked into town. This wasn t the Philadelphia he knew the buildings were much smaller, and most of the streets narrower. He looked at a newspaper in a shop window: The Pennsylvania Mercury, it read. February 20, Uh-oh, Raoul thought. Where was he going to get the parts he needed to fix his time machine? What had his father always said? If you don t know who to ask, start at the top. But who was at the top in Philadelphia in 1792? He walked past a large home just as some men ran out the front door, chased by a very tall man waving a walking stick. And stay out, the tall man hollered. I do say, one of the other men remarked as he hurried out the gate past Raoul, President Washington is in a foul mood today. The other man nodded in agreement. Raoul remembered his history class the nation s capital had not moved from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., until Start at the top, he thought. He walked to the front door of the house and knocked. A servant opened. My name is Raoul Kirschbaum, and I am here to see President Washington, Raoul said. The servant tried to wave him away, but then a voice thundered from inside the house, asking who it was. A wee lad is here to see you, Mr. President, said the servant. Raoul thought quickly. His father used to talk about Washington s wooden dentures, and how uncomfortable they must have been. Maybe that was why the President was in such a bad mood. The dentist sent me to fix your dentures, Raoul said. You mean the goldsmith? Washington asked. Right, the goldsmith, Raoul replied. Very well, then, Washington said. I ll have the servant bring them out, and some proper tools. Soon, Raoul was sitting at a table in front of a large tray of a collection of dentures. Some were carved out of ivory, some were made from real teeth. None, however, were made of wood. That must be an old-wives tale, Raoul thought. Most had hinged gold plates connected by springs. No wonder they were so uncomfortable, Raoul thought, the springs are incredibly stiff. He adjusted the springs and told the servant to have the President try them. Washington came into the room personally. That s much better, lad. You re very skilled. What can I do to repay you? Raoul asked to borrow the tools. He used them to repair his time machine. With luck, he figured, he could be home before he left.
Choose the best answer for each question. 1. In what year did Raoul meet President Washington? a b c d Where was the capital of the United States in 1790? a. Philadelphia b. New York c. Washington, D.C. d. Boston 3. Who opens the door for Raoul at the President s house? a. two visitors b. a servant c. President Washington d. Raoul himself 4. What does Raoul guess is irritating the President? a. visitors b. ill-fitting dentures c. goldsmiths d. servants 5. What were none of Washington s dentures made of? a. ivory b. gold c. real teeth d. wood 6. What is the story that Washington had wooden dentures? a. a myth b. a true fact c. something an old woman tells Raoul in the story d. a story Paul Revere told
Answer these questions in complete sentences. 1. Why did Raoul wait until his parents were asleep to take the time machine? 2. How does Raoul find out what date it is? What would be another way to find out? 3. Explain Raoul s father s advice, If you don t know who to ask, start at the top. 4. Why does the servant think a goldsmith, and not a dentist, sent Raoul to fix the dentures? 5. When does Raoul hope to return home with his repaired time machine?
Name Date Answer this question using information from the text and your own experience/research/understanding/etc. President George Washington suffered from a bad temper, and bad teeth (he had only one tooth left when he became President!), and many infections that may have been worsened by his dental problems. He never had wooden dentures, but he really did have ill-fitting dentures, as dentures were primitive in his lifetime. He eventually died of an infection. How do you think modern dentistry and modern medicine might have made his life (and history!) different?
ANSWERS MULTIPLE CHOICE 1. c 2. a 3. b 4. b 5. d 6. a SHORT ANSWER (answers will vary; accept reasonable responses that include the following ideas) 1.
