Going to the Dentist Expressing Obligation and Necessity 9:30am - 9:45am Ice Breaker What was the best thing that happened this last week? What was the worst thing that happened this last week? Every six months, I visit my dentist for a regular dental check-up. At the dentist's office, a dental hygienist will bring me into one of their private patient rooms and x-ray my teeth and gums to detect any problems inside my teeth. Then, the dentist reviews the x-rays and checks my teeth to see if I have any dental problems like cavities. If she sees any cavities, she will clean and fill them. Of course, she first will give me a shot so I don't feel any pain. After that, the dental hygienist will clean my teeth by removing any plaque buildup on my teeth. Plaque contains bacteria that can damage your teeth. The hygienist will also polish and floss my teeth at the end. I will also have the dentist whiten my teeth this time using a special procedure in her office. My dental insurance covers part of the cost of the dental cleaning and teeth fillings, but it doesn't cover non-essential procedures like tooth whitening. 9:45am - 10:00am Vocabulary and Conversation Directions: Explain and give examples of any new vocabulary. Complete and practice the conversation below using has/have to, must, have got to, or an imperative (command). Check your answers with the conversation at the end of the lesson brush your teeth floss your teeth fill a cavity get a dental cleaning 11. have your wisdom teeth pulled 12. remove tartar buildup 13. make a dental appointment 1

Novocaine 18. use toothpaste 19. visit the dentist 20. discomfort/pain Hello, Bobby, I m Doctor Bruce. So you re here today for your regular dental check-up and cleaning. Have you been taking good care of your teeth and gums -- brushing your teeth twice a day? Well..sometimes. Bobby, you (1. (brush) at least twice a day. Do you floss your teeth? (2. (floss) my teeth? You (3. (not floss) your teeth only the ones you want to keep! What else (4. (do)? It also helps to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, especially desserts, for example, cookies, cakes, soft drinks and candy. (5. (stop) eating desserts? Bobby, you (6. (not stop), but you (7. (limit) sweets in your diet. And you (8. (brush) and floss more often as we discussed. Here are some other things you (9. (do) to have healthy teeth and gums: (10. (brush) lightly. Brushing too hard can damage your gums. It can cause them to recede (move away from the teeth). Plaque attaches to teeth like jam sticks to a spoon. It can't be totally removed by rinsing, but a light brushing will do the trick. Once plaque has hardened into calculus (tartar), brushing can't remove it. (11. (brush) for at least two minutes. (12. (always use) a toothbrush with "soft" or "extra soft" bristles. The harder the brush, the greater the risk of harming your gums. 2
(13. (change) your toothbrush regularly. Good news, Bobby, I don t see any cavities today! Thanks, Doctor Bruce. Well, another painless visit! The hygienist is ready for you now. If time permits, choose one or two role plays to act out with your students. One student is the dentist, while the other student is the patient. 1. You want to telephone your dentist and make an appointment. 2. You want to change your appointment. Call and change it. 3. Your dentist just filled two of your cavities. Ask him or her for some advice on how to take better care of your teeth. (The student should be the dentist.) 4. Your gums usually bleed when you brush your teeth. Ask your dentist from some advice. 5. Your child s teeth are crooked. Talk to the dentist about braces. 10:00-10:40 Questions and Practice Part I: Questions 1. Discuss a past experience at a dentist. Why did you go? What procedures did you have done? 2. What do you think about when you hear the word dentist? 3. How important is a beautiful smile to you? 4. How often do you visit a dentist? 5. Do you like visiting the dentist? 6. What do you think of the smell and sounds at the dentist? 7. Do you think trips to the dentist are reasonably priced? 8. Do you have good or bad childhood memories of dentists? 9. Would you like to look inside people s mouths all day as a job? 10. Talk about a good and bad dentist you ve had. 11. Are your teeth and gums in good condition? 12. Do you think there is a good choice of dentists in your town? 13. What thing do you most dislike about going to the dentist? 14. What s your favorite toothpaste? 15. How many times a day do you clean your teeth? 16. How often do you have a check-up? 17. What is the worst smell on someone s breath? 18. Do you know anyone with really bad breath? 19. How many times in your life have you had a toothache? 3
20. What do you think of the idea of false teeth/implants? 21. Have you ever worn braces? 22. What do you do when you sit in the dentist s waiting room? Part II. Grammar Practice: Expressing Obligation and Necessity 1. What are some things you have to do today? Tomorrow? Every day? 2. What is something you had to do yesterday? 3. What is something you ve got to do soon? 4. What is something you ve got to do later tonight? 5. What is something a driver must do according to the law? 6. What are some things a person must do to stay alive? 10:40-11:00 Bible Study Mark 4:35-41 Jesus Calms the Storm 35 That evening, Jesus said to his followers, "Let's go across the lake." 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him in the boat just as he was. There were also other boats with them. 37 A very strong wind came up on the lake. The waves came over the sides and into the boat so that it was already full of water. 38 Jesus was at the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a cushion. His followers woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we are drowning!" 39 Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind stopped, and it became completely calm. The Word You May Not know: followers = followers of Jesus who believe His teaching; drown = to die under water; command = to tell someone to do something; completely calm = fully quiet Questions from Mark 4: Did the experienced fishermen handle the storm well? 2. What would you do if you were one of the disciples in the boat? 3. What do you do when you face an unexpected life storm (illness, relationship, financial challenge, job loss)? 4. Do you think such a powerful Jesus can help in your unexpected life storm? 5. Jesus followers woke him and said, "Teacher, don't you care that we are drowning?" The disciples seemed to think Jesus didn t care. Do you think Jesus cares about your storms? What would you say to him if you needed his help? 4
6. Have you ever experienced any life storms? What are they? (Ex., difficult relationships, health, financial challenge, death of someone you love, and etc. ) How did you overcome the life storm? If you are in the middle of a storm right now, ask your teacher to pray for you! 7. Quiet! Be still If Jesus said this word to your life today, what would it mean to you? Grammar: Expressing Obligation and Necessity Has/have to Must Has/have to shows that something is necessary or required now or in the future Must is used to explain rules, laws, or requirements. It is used more in writing than in speaking and it is not as common as have to. a. Parents have to teach their children good oral hygiene. take b. She has to take better care of her teeth and gums. c. Everyone must brush their teeth twice a day. d. Every driver must obey the traffic laws. Have got to Imperatives The past tense of must is had to. Have got to is used in speaking and is somewhat informal. It has the same meaning as have to. Imperatives are commands that are used to give directions, orders, or warnings. e. When Barb was a child, she had to wear braces. f. I have got to go now. g. He s got to be home by 9:00. h. Don t speed on the highways. i. Be more careful next time. j. Call me when you arrive. Completed Conversation Hello, Bobby, I m Doctor Bruce. So you came today to have your regular dental check-up and cleaning. Have you been brushing your teeth twice a day? 5
Well..sometimes. Bobby, you must brush at least twice a day. Do you floss your teeth? Do I have to floss my teeth? You don t have to floss your teeth only the ones you want to keep! What else must I do? It also helps to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, especially desserts, for example, cookies, cakes, soft drinks and candy. Do I have to stop eating desserts? Bobby, you don t have to stop, but you must limit sweets in your diet. And you ve got to brush and floss more often as we discussed.
