3 CE Points: Participants can earn a total of 7 CE points in Category 2 and 5 CE points in Category 3 over the two days of the New Dentist Symposium for a total of up to 12 CE Points. In order to receive all eligible CE points for each day of the symposium attendees must scan their badge in the morning and again in the afternoon (after lunch). Attendees cannot claim CE points for attending a half day of the symposium. Checking in on-site: (Registration & badge pick-up begins each morning from 8:00 9:00 am) Upon arrival, all attendees must check-in and pick up their badge and handout package at the registration desk. SMEs will be seated at individual round tables where participants can gather and ask their questions directly to them. Session Descriptions Day 1 Saturday October 27, :15 10:45 am Tips and Tricks That Would Make Your Operative Professor Proud John Maggio, DDS Most dentists spend a lot of time each day placing direct restorations. With the right techniques, restoring these teeth can be predictable, and even fun! This fast-paced, interactive course will have an immediate impact on your daily treatment of patients. A wide variety of operative procedures and cases will be presented. Attendees will learn a stress-free technique for back-to-back class 2 composites, how to prevent post-operative sensitivity in posterior class 1 occlusal composites and how to avoid pulp exposures in very deep carious lesions using the stepwise technique. Evidence-based techniques for repairing existing restorations in patients with a high caries risk, when to use composite resin, flowable composite, amalgam and glass ionomers will also be discussed. Create ideal class 4 composites with invisible margins and solid proximal contacts. Recognize indications for sandwich restorations and the best materials to make it happen. Use a great technique that simplifies restoration of challenging carious root lesions. 11:00 12:00 pm Dental Recordkeeping: Just the Essentials Michael Gardner, DDS Professional, ethical and legal responsibilities require that a complete chart and record documenting all aspects of each patient s dental care be maintained. A detailed chart accurately records the patient s 4
5 Session Descriptions dental condition when first presenting at the office, assists and supports a proper diagnosis and treatment planning, and provides a clear description of the patient s ongoing care. Good records are also the dentist s best defence in the event of a formal complaint or lawsuit. In this presentation, RCDSO representatives offer guidance and practical advice in understanding the dental recordkeeping requirements in Ontario. Understand and appreciate the reasons for keeping good patient records. Describe the requirements for various components of a complete chart. Identify problem areas and take advantage of helpful tips to keep better patient records. 1:00 2:30 pm Practical Clinical Tips in Prosthodontics Mark Lin, DDS, MSc (Prosthodontics), FRCD(C) As a new dentist, the field of fixed, implant and removable prosthodontics may be challenging or confusing depending on the clinical scenario. This presentation will aim to clarify the complex topic of prosthodontics for the clinical dentist. The top 10 practical prosthodontic clinical principles will be presented with the objectives to aid new dentists in this discipline of dentistry. Achieving accurate diagnosis, predictable clinical procedures and satisfactory clinical outcomes will improve the quality of life for our patients and the dental practice. Day 2 Saturday October 28, :15 10:45 am Perioperative Management of the Oral Surgery Patient Keyvan Abbaszadeh, DMD, FRCD(C) Our evolving understanding of physiology and advances in instrumentation and pharmacology is making it possible to ensure that our patients are more comfortable than ever to undergo safe and predictable care. Regardless of the area of practice all dentists would need an understanding of basic peri-operative assessment and management of oral surgical patients. This is even more paramount when we deal with medically challenging patients. Evaluate a patient for appropriate oral surgery treatment. Manage common post-operative sequelae and/ or arrange for appropriate referral. Understand the potential complications associated with common oral surgical procedures. 11:00 12:00 pm Solving the Money Puzzle David Chong Yen, CPA, CA, CFP Many new dentists struggle to navigate the difficult financial maze in their first few years of practice. This session will provide attendees with key financial and accounting advice, essential for the first 10 years of practice. Through a case study of a new dentist, 18 ways to accumulate wealth will be identified. What to look for and traps to avoid when buying or opening a dental practice. Which loans to pay off first and comparing paying off loans vs. investing. Pros and cons of buying a home vs. a practice and leasing vs. buying a car. 5
6 1:00 2:30 pm Creating Endodontic Predictability: New and Exciting Standards in Endodontic Treatment Gary Glassman, DDS, FRCD(C) This lecture will address and detail the skills necessary for performing the highest quality endodontics with expertise and confidence. Attendees will become familiar with performing a systematic diagnostic protocol to accurately assess and treat the endodontically compromised tooth, as well as understand the complexity of the root canal system. Tips and tricks will be revealed that will help prevent procedural misadventures and allow you to provide your patient with predictable success. Cases showing successes and failures will be presented, allowing you to see how reallife situations are handled. Glide path preparation and the crown-down approach to canal shaping with nickel-titanium instrumentation will also be discussed and demonstrated. Shape the root canal space using NiTi technology in a safe and efficient manner using Adaptive Motion technology. 2:45 3:45 pm Introduction to the ODA Suggested Fee Guide Leslie Redmond, RDH Recognizing that the ODA Suggested Fee Guide is an important part of running a business both ethically and economically, this session is designed so that dentists can interpret and use the Fee Guide accurately and effectively. Participants will hear best practices in choosing the correct procedure codes, determining fees and communicating with patients. Identify and apply principles required to develop fees and report services using the ODA Suggested Fee Guide, acknowledging the link to professional conduct. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the dentist as they relate to patient relations. Become familiar with the key aspects and the importance of record keeping and documentation as it relates to procedure code verification. Remove the smear layer and biofilm with stateof-the-art irrigation protocols using apical negative pressure and ultrasonics. Obturate the root canal system in 3D to capture the natural anatomy with the continuous wave of condensation. 6
7 Speaker Biographies The ODA New Dentist Symposium brings together a variety of distinguished speakers to meet the specific needs of new dentists. These industry leaders will provide you with tools to help you excel in your practice, profession and in your personal life. Keyvan Abbaszadeh, DMD, FRCD(C) Dr. Keyvan Abbaszadeh completed his dental training at Tufts University in Boston followed by a general practice residency at Harvard University. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago in Dr. Abbaszadeh is an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Western University. David Chong Yen, CPA, CA, CFP David Chong Yen is an alumnus of the University of Toronto and obtained his chartered accountant designation in David has been advising dentists on tax and financial planning, valuations and accounting for more than 30 years. David is a tax specialist as well as a certified financial planner who founded the chartered professional accounting firm DCYPCCPA. David has also been a speaker at various dental schools and associations across Ontario, has published hundreds of tax articles for the dental community and also wrote the ODA published book titled, Dentist s Tax and Financial Guide. Michael Gardner, DDS Dr. Michael Gardner received his DDS from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, in While maintaining a private practice, he joined the RCDSO staff in 1996 on a part-time basis, serving as an investigator and monitoring officer, and in 1998, he became the College s first Professional Practice Adviser. In 2000, Dr. Gardner left private practice to join the full-time staff of the College, and he was soon appointed Assistant to the Registrar in the Complaints, Investigations and Hearings area of the College. In 2009, Dr. Gardner became the College s Manager of Quality Assurance and in 2016, he was promoted to Director. Gary Glassman, DDS, FRCD(C) Dr. Gary Glassman graduated from the University of Toronto in 1984 and from the Endodontology Program at Temple University in Widely published, Dr. Glassman lectures globally on endodontics, is on staff at the University of Toronto and is Adjunct Professor of Dentistry and Endodontic Chairman at UTech, Kingston, Jamaica. Dr. Glassman is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, the American College of Dentists and the Endodontic Editor for the dental journal Oral Health. He also maintains Endodontic Specialists, a private practice in Toronto. Mark Lin, DDS, MSc (Prosthodontics), FRCD(C) Dr. Mark H.E. Lin graduated from the University of Detroit - Mercy School of Dentistry. He then completed a one-year general practice residency program at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He practised general dentistry for 13 years, then returned to complete his postgraduate training in the specialty of prosthodontics at the University of Toronto. Dr. Lin is currently an Editorial Board Member for Prosthodontics in the Oral Health Journal and serves as an expert consultant for the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO). 7
8 John Maggio, DDS Dr. John Maggio graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in He is currently the Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where he supervises students in the predoctoral dental clinic. He is Course Director of the third year Cariology and Direct Restorations course and has developed protocols for caries management and operative dentistry in the school s dental clinics. Dr. Maggio also teaches interactive, evidence-based continuing education courses in restorative dentistry and caries management to dentists and their teams. Leslie Redmond, RDH Leslie Redmond is the assistant dental information officer in the practice advisory services department of the Ontario Dental Association. She provides technical expertise regarding the use of the ODA Suggested Fee Guide to ODA members and their dental teams. In addition to matters related to procedure codes, she also provides support and direction to members on dental claims adjudication.
