1 Abnormal Psychology PSYC 259 Spring 2019 Class time: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday pm Name of Faculty: Contact details: Dr John Felton jf35@evansville.edu Office hours: Course Description PSYC 259 Abnormal Psychology (3) Examines abnormal behavior with emphasis on anxiety disorders, affective disorders and schizophrenia. Includes the biological and psychological bases of mental disorder and psychological factors involved the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder. Prerequisite: Psychology 121. Credit Hour Policy Statement This class meets the federal credit hour policy of: Standard lecture e.g. 1 hour of class with an expected 2 hours of additional student work outside of class each week for approximately 15 weeks for each hour of credit, or a total of hours for each credit. General Education Objective This course meets the General Education requirements for:- None apply. Learning Objectives Listed below are the Learning Objectives for the course: Following abnormal psychology, the student should be able to describe the distinction between normal and abnormal behavior. He/she should also be able to describe the behavior associated with the standard categories of psychopathology. The students should be able to delineate various conceptions and theories of the etiology of these disorders. Some understanding of various techniques used to assess abnormal behavior should result from participation in the course. A grasp of various techniques, both psychological and organic, for altering psychopathological behavior should also occur. 4 Assessment and Grading Criteria GRADING SCALE Grades will be based on total accumulated points based on the following distribution: A A B B B C C C D D F 259 & below EVALUATION: Your final grade will be based on points earned from: A. Three multiple-choice exams worth 100 points each, covering both the textbook and lecture material. B. Attendance will be taken at every class, to include field trips, and 1 point will be awarded for each class attended up to a maximum of 35 points. C. You will write a paper on a topic of your choosing related to abnormal psychology, but which must be approved by me. Send me an with your choice of topic and I will respond with my approval if that topic has not already been assigned. The topic will come from one of the PsychWatch, MindTech or InfoCentral boxes placed throughout the textbook. You will supplement what the author has to say in the box of your choosing with at least 2 recent scientific references from journals in the field. It will be written in accordance with APA writing format. I will place a link to a useful website on APA writing style in your Announcements section of the BlackBoard site for this course and there may be a workshop held in our Writing Center during the semester on the topic. The paper will be due no later than 4/6. 5 Attendance Policy Harlaxton College operates a mandatory attendance policy that is binding on all faculty and students. The number of unexcused absences that are allowed before incurring a penalty is related to the number of times a class meets during a week. This means that for courses which meet three times a week students are allowed a maximum of three unexcused absences during the semester without attracting penalty points, for courses meeting twice a week two such absences are permitted and for courses meeting just once a week a single absence is allowed. N. B.For this course attendance is required and is evaluated as a part of your class grade. Roll will be taken in class. Roll will be taken on our field trips and again your attendance on these trips becomes a part of your class grade. A comprehensive final exam will be given on the scheduled day and time for this class period. If, however, you are satisfied with the grade earned as of the third exam, you may opt out of the final. If you choose to take the final and you do better than you did on any of the previous three exams the final grade will be substituted for the previous lowest exam. If you do worse than on any of the three previous exams the final will not count into your grade. Keep in mind though that since the final will be comprehensive it will be more difficult to prepare for than any of the regularly scheduled tests during the semester. Students are responsible for the academic consequences of their failure to attend class. If any assessment (e.g. in-class test, exam, paper, presentation, etc.) is missed, there is no expectation or requirement that a faculty member will accept the work after it is due, provide an extension to a deadline, or offer an alternative assessment opportunity for a student with an unexcused absence. Drop/Add and Withdrawal Policy There is normally about a 10 day period at the beginning of semester when a student may drop and class and/or add a class. The deadline date is published in the Semester Guidance handbook. Drop/Add forms are available from the library and completed forms should be returned to the same place. Faculty signatures are required for all classes being added Students may withdraw from a class, with the exception of British Studies, for a longer period of time. Again the deadline date is published in the Semester Guidance handbook. Forms are available from the College Secretary, to whom completed forms should be returned. Forms must be signed by the faculty member of the class being withdrawn from and the Principal. All students must register for, and be continuously enrolled in, 12 credit hours of study to be eligible to study at Harlaxton and remain in the United Kingdom.
