Message for Sunday Night, November 28, 2010 SERIES: Psalms For Everyday Living MESSAGE 13 in series Christian Hope Church of Christ, Plymouth, North Carolina by Reggie A. Braziel, minister As The Deer Message 13 in Psalms For Everyday Living Series Psalm 42:1-11 As we continue with our series from the Book of Psalms, I would like for you to open your Bibles to PSALM 42 and just keep your Bibles open to that scripture. We ll be reading it in just a moment. ************ I m going to ask you a question. Let s see if you can give me the answer. What do Moses Elijah..Jeremiah.David Charles Spurgeon..Abraham Lincoln..and the late, Mickey Mantle all have in common? ANSWER: They all suffered through periods of deep, dark depression. Do you ever get depressed? I do. In fact, I think it is safe to say that every one of us has spells of depression from time to time. Even the most optimistic, happy-go-lucky person you know, likely has periods of depression. And you just don t know about it. More often than not, DEPRESSION comes after a LOSS in life. -The loss of a mate -The loss of a marriage -The loss of good health -The loss of a son or daughter -The loss of a close friend -The loss of a parent -The loss of a job or income
Its not uncommon at all for a young mother to suffer post-partum depression after giving birth to a child. Parents, especially mothers, often go through a period of depression when the nest is empty after all the kids have grown and moved away from home. Many people suffer from seasonal depression, which often occurs during the long winter months when the days are colder and shorter. Over 4 MILLION Americans are classified as clinically depressed and have to have routine visits with mental health counselors and take medication every day just to function. There are at least 2,000 SUICIDES in the world every single day. And at the root of most of those suicides is SEVERE DEPRESSION. **************************************************************************** Christians are not immune to depression. In fact, Satan, our enemy, will do everything he can to discourage us, defeat us and depress us, because he knows it robs us of JOY and hinders our service to the LORD. ********************************************************
Now, a little bit about this Psalm we re looking at this evening. Psalm 42 was written in a time of severe depression. In fact, it is classified as a song or psalm of lament. A lament is a heart-felt cry to God when it seems as though GOD is absent. One often laments in times of sorrow, loss, or depression. Most commentators agree that PSALM 42 and PSALM 43 actually go together and should not be separated by a chapter break. In fact if you will notice the footnote on Psalm 43 it reads something like this: In many Hebrew manuscripts Psalm 42 and 43 constitute one Psalm. One other thing I want to point out before we read this Psalm is the author. This Psalm and likely Psalm 43 as well, were written by the Sons of Korah, not David. The sons of Korah were the priestly descendants of Levi. They were the ones who led the worship services for the Jewish people in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. While the date of this 42 nd Psalm cannot be determined, it is believed to have been written during the Babylonian captivity, when the Israelites were hundreds of miles away from the Temple in Jerusalem. This would explain what was at the root of their depression and why this psalm has such a tone of lament. Now, having said all this, let s look at this 42 ND PSALM together. B R I E F P R A Y E R READ: PSALM 42:1-11
In this Psalm we find two ways to effectively deal with depression. First of all.. I. Stop Looking At Yourself and Start Looking at God (vs. 1, 2 ) 1. There are 51 personal pronouns in Psalm 42 and 43. The writer uses the personal pronoun I fourteen times..the personal pronoun me sixteen times.and the personal pronoun my twenty one times. 2. When we are depressed we tend to be very selfish. When we are depressed the three people we think of most are ME..MYSELF.and I. When we are depressed its as though the whole world revolves around our troubles our problems our miseries our pain our burdens our sorrows and our situation. In other words, when we are depressed most of us tend to respond in the worst way possible and that is to turn all thoughts INWARD. And when we turn all our thoughts inward all we do is dig our pit of depression deeper and deeper.
3. As you look down through these verses its obvious the writer of this Psalm is having a good, old-fashioned pity party. Ever have one of those? Of course you have. We all have pity parties every now and then. Look at vs. 5a Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? vs. 5c My soul is downcast within me. v. 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? 4. The best thing we can do when we are depressed is stop looking at ourselves and start looking at GOD. Its interesting that the Psalmist did just that at the very beginning of this Psalm before quickly turning all his thoughts back on himself. READ-----VERSES 1, 2 5. What does the psalmist mean when he says, As the deer pants for streams of water? When a deer is intensely thirsty the pace of its breathing will speed up causing the deer to make a panting sound. Does the deer think to itself, Boy, I sure would like to have a drink of water? NO! The deer is instinctively drawn to water and it will wander through fields and forest until it finds the stream that can satisfy its thirst.
6. And when a deer is in trouble, like when it is being chased by dogs or being hunted down by a wild animal, that thirst that panting intensifies all the more. 7. Just like a deer pants for water when it is intensely thirsty or in serious trouble, that is how you and I should search for GOD. 8. Rather than looking GOD as our last resort we instinctively turn to GOD as our first line of defense in times of depression or trouble or discouragement. 9. Only GOD can satisfy our thirst. Only GOD can calm and soothe our troubled soul. Only GOD can give us the peace of mind and heart and give us the assurance everything is going to be alright. 10. So tonight, if you are depressed if you are down in the dumps and discouraged, STOP LOOKING AT YOURSELF and START LOOKING AT GOD. ***************************** Now here s the second thing we need to do when we are depressed (STARTS ON NEXT PAGE )
II. Stop Dwelling On The Past and Start Dwelling On The Future (vs. 3, 4) 1. As the psalmist pens this 42 nd Psalm we find him dwelling on the past. READ-----VERSES 3, 4 2. I have known some severely depressed people in my time. And one thing I have noticed ALL SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED people seem to have in common is they tend to look BACKWARDS rather than FORWARDS. Instead of looking out the windshield of life with HOPE for what lies ahead, they look at life through the rear-view mirror. DEPRESSED people long for the good old days as though their best days are behind them not ahead of them. DEPRESSED people dwell on past regrets past sorrows past troubles, past injustices past failures past problems and past losses as though they are a victim of life s unfairness. 3. Now if one does not have GOD in his or her life it is understandable why they would have trouble looking forward to the future. I mean if one doesn t have GOD in his or her life they have NO FUTURE!
4. But Christians, even though you and I will go through times of depression and discouragement, we can look forward to our FUTURE with HOPE rather than HOPELESSNESS, when we put all our FAITH, all our HOPE and all our TRUST in GOD. v. 5b Put your HOPE in GOD, for I will yet praise HIM, my SAVIOR and my GOD. Then notice the Psalmist repeats this again in the last part of the last verse of this 42 nd Psalm. 5. DEPRESSION never goes away by dwelling on the past, in fact, it only gets worse! 6. But when you and I put our HOPE and TRUST in the LORD we can start moving toward a brighter future one day at a time. ****************************************** C O N C L U S I O N History remembers Abraham Lincoln as one of the greatest presidents this nation ever had. Yet in spite of his strong character and great leadership abilities, Abraham Lincoln battled severe depression most of his life. Listen carefully to his words: I am now the most miserable man living. If what I feel were equally distributed to the whole human family, there would not be one cheerful face on earth. To remain as I am is impossible. I must die or be better. How did Lincoln survive? How did he lead this great nation through the dark days of the Civil War? He did it by seeking the presence of almighty GOD, as a deer pants for streams of water.
