2 LESSON 1 MENTAL DISORDERS 1. Define the term mental disorder. An illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person, preventing him or her from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life. 2. Approximately what percentage of the U.S. population is affected by some form of mental disorder each year? 20 % or 54 million people.

3 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED Of the children and adolescents who suffer from mental health problems, what fraction receive the help they need? One-third. 3. What distinguishes mental disorders that are classified as organic disorders from those classified as functional disorder? Organic disorders caused by physical illness or an injury that affects the brain. Functional disorder has a psychological cause that does not involve brain damage.

4 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED 4. List 2 possible causes of organic and functional disorders. Organic disorders brain tumor, illness, and injury. Functional disorders heredity, stress, and events in childhood such as abuse. 5. Define the term anxiety disorder. A condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control.

6 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED Panic Disorder sudden unexplained feelings of terror. Post- traumatic stress disorder a condition that that may develop after exposure to a terrifying event that threatened or caused physical harm. Symptoms may include flashbacks and/or nightmares Define the term mood disorder. An illness, often with an organic cause that involves mood extremes that interfere with everyday living.

7 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED 8. List 2 types of mood disorders. Clinical depression. Bipolar disorder Describe how clinical depression differs from the blues. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair last for more then a few weeks and interfere with daily life. Clinical depression is a result of a chemical imbalance.

8 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED 10. List 2 eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa. 11. What are conduct disorders? A pattern of behaviors in which the rights of others or basic social rules are violated. Give five examples of a conduct disorder. Theft, aggression, violence, truancy, and vandalism.

9 LESSON 1 - CONTINUED 12. What is schizophrenia? A severe mental disorder is which a person loses contact with reality. 13. List 4 ways you can help defeat the social stigma of mental illness. Use respectful language when referring to a person with a mental disorder. Emphasize abilities over limitations. Express disapproval if someone disrespect toward people with mental disorders. Encourage people with emotional problems to seek help.

10 LESSON 2 SUICIDE PREVENTION 1. Define the term alienation. Feeling isolated and separated from everyone else. 2. Define the term suicide. The act of intentionally taking one s own life. 3. What are the risk factors of suicide? Depression. Suffering from another disorder. Alcohol/drug abuse. History of abuse/previous suicide attempts.

11 LESSON 2 - CONTINUED 4. List 4 recognizable verbal warning signs of someone s intent to commit suicide. Direct statements. Indirect statements. Writings that deal with death. Suicide threats. 5. List 4 recognizable nonverbal or behavioral warning signs of someone s intent to commit suicide. Unusual obsession with death.

12 LESSON 2 - CONTINUED Withdrawal from friends. Hygiene/appearance. Bizarre behavior. 6. What is the leading cause of suicide? Untreated depression. 7. Why is it important to show concern and empathy for someone who is talking about suicide? Believe their death will not matter, important to show concern.

13 LESSON 2 - CONTINUED 8. What are 3 ways you can show a suicidal person you care? Start meaningful conversation. Ask questions. Convince person to get help. 9. What are cluster suicides? Series of suicides occurring within a short period of time and involving several people in the same school or community.

14 LESSON 2 - CONTINUED 10.Describe 2 scenarios that sometimes result in cluster suicides. Suicide pact. Suicide of a friend has been sensationalized in the media. 11.List 2 recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control for preventing cluster suicides. Evaluate people close to suicide victim high risk. Media should not glorify the victim.

15 LESSON 3 GETTING HELP 1. Describe 6 persistent feeling or behaviors that signal the need to seek help dealing with mental or emotional problems. Feel alone, unable to face problems. Feel trapped, no way out. Feelings affect sleep, school, work, and relationships. Family/friends become concerned. Using drugs and/or alcohol. Become aggressive, violent, and reckless.

16 LESSON 3 - CONTINUED 2. What are the 4 questions to ask when evaluating sources of self-help? Are you being advised to try medication? Qualifications of author? Material comes from nationally known and well respected mental health organization. Is cost involved? 3. List 7 signs of mental illness. Prolonged sadness no specific reason.

17 LESSON 3 - CONTINUED Overwhelming fear, and anxiety. Frequent outbursts of anger. Difficulty concentrating and making daily decisions. Anger at the world. Change in sleeping habits. Social withdrawal. 4. Where are children and teens most likely to receive treatment? School.

18 LESSON 3 - CONTINUED 5. List 3 facts that might help you or someone you know to seek help with mental/emotional problems. Asking for helps shows strength not weakness. Probably can t get better without help. Unloading problems can be a great relief. 6. Describe the role of the following mental health professionals. Psychiatrist diagnoses and treats mental disorders, can prescribe medicine. Neurologist organic disorders of the brain/nervous system.

19 LESSON 3 - CONTINUED Clinical psychologist diagnoses and treats emotional/behavioral disorders, NO medicine. Counselor helps people with personal and educational matters. Psychiatric social worker provides guidance and treatment in mental hospital or clinic. School psychologist assessment of learning, emotional/behavioral problems of schoolchildren. 7. List and describe 5 commonly used therapy methods.

20 LESSON 3 - CONTINUED Psychotherapy ongoing dialogue between a patient and a mental health professional. Behavior therapy treatment process that focuses on changing unwanted behaviors. Cognitive therapy treatment method designed to identify and correct distorted thinking patterns and behaviors that may be troublesome, self-defeating, or self destructive. Group therapy treating people with similar problems. Biomedical therapy use of medication to treat disorder.

21 LESSON 4 UNDERSTANDING DEATH AND GRIEF 1. Define the following terms. Coping dealing successfully with difficult changes in your life. Grief response an individual s total response to a major loss. Closure the state of reaching an acceptance of a loss. 2. List 3 factors that might affect the way a person responds to a loss. The manner of the loss (long term illness/unexpected). Perspective on the lost relationship. Ability to remain open to interaction in other relationships.

22 LESSON 4 - CONTINUED 3. What is the purpose of the grieving process? To reach closure. 4. What do the stages of grief identified in part by Dr. Kubler-Ross reflect? A variety of reactions that may occur as people work through the grieving process.

23 LESSON 4 - CONTINUED 5. List the stages of grief and experiences within that stage. Denial or numbness person cannot believe the loss has occurred. Anger feeling powerless and unfairly deprived. Depression beyond the natural feelings of sadness. Bargaining as the reality of the loss become clear, the person may promise to change if only what was lost can be returned. Acceptance feeling a sense of power, facing reality in constructive ways.

24 LESSON 4 - CONTINUED 6. List 2 suggestions that help when you are experiencing the breakup of a relationship. Allow yourself to feel the pain. You can t control another person s behavior or decisions.

25 LESSON 4 - CONTINUED 7. List 4 things you can do to help cope with the death of a relative or friend. Reflect on who you were before the loss/who you will be after grieving. Remember wonderful things about the person and the things you did together. Seek support. Write a good-bye letter.

26 LESSON 4 - CONTINUED 8. List 4 effective coping mechanisms that can ease the process of coping with disasters and crises. Spend time with other people/discuss your feelings. Get back to daily routines as quickly as possible. Eat nutritious foods, exercise, and get enough rest and sleep. Do something positive to help your community through the event.
