SUICIDE The act of intentionally killing oneself. 3 rd leading cause of death in the U.S. among young people ages Most of the time, young people don t want to die; they just want their problems to go away. It results in approximately 4400 lives lost each year. Suicide is a PERMANENT solution to a TEMPORARY problem!
SUICIDE RISK FACTORS Several factors can put a young person at risk for suicide. Having these risk factors does not always mean that suicide will occur: History of previous suicide attempts Family history of suicide History of depression or other mental illness Alcohol or drug abuse Stressful life event or loss Easy access to lethal methods Exposure to the suicidal behavior of others
What We Know about Bullying and Suicide We know that bullying behavior and suicide-related behavior are closely related. Youth who report any involvement with bullying behavior are more likely to report high levels of suicide-related behavior. We don t know if bullying directly causes suicide-related behavior. Most youth who are involved in bullying do NOT engage in suicide-related behavior. It is correct to say that involvement in bullying increases the chance that a young person will engage in suicide related behaviors.
Quick Write So what do you think about bullying and suiciderelated behavior? Do you think there is a connection? Explain in 2-3 sentences.
SUICIDE WARNING SIGNS Talking about death or mentioning methods of suicide Previous attempts Personality changes Withdrawal from others Changes in eating/sleeping habits Losing interest in hobbies/sports Depression Giving away prized possessions
HELPING A FRIEND If someone you know talks about suicide: Let the person talk. Remain calm. After you ve listened, talk to your friend. Tell your friend that his or her life is very important to you. Point out that this bad time will pass. Urge your friend to get help. Let your friend know that you will stand by him or her.
