1 Mental Illness and Disorders Notes Stigma - is a negative and often unfair about mental illness and disorders can cause people with these to not seek help. Deny problem, feel shame and -feel as if they will lose on a, job scholarship, leadership role, because of their condition. Defining Mental Illness - is a medical condition that is characterized by a mental or emotional problem so severe that it interferes with daily functioning. Example: Fear of being in public space. - not going to school, work, or to visit family/friends. Illness or. disorder =, both refer to serious mental health conditions involving thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Anxiety Common signs include- increased heart rate,, sweaty palms, and upset stomach. Anxiety Disorder - a mental illness characterized by extreme or worries about daily events, experienced, or objects. Panic Disorder/ Attacks = episodes of fear that something bad is going to happen. They also include severe physical symptoms like heart palpitations and nausea. Generalized Anxiety Disorder = have a pattern of constantly about many different activities and events, even when these worries are not based in. Phobias = have extreme anxiety caused by specific or situations. Social Anxiety = have a strong fear of being by other people of feeling embarrassed. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) - people who have persistent and thoughts or feelings that they manage by engaging in behavior. Post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - People who live through a terrifying event involving harm or the threat of harm,, natural disaster. Experience when

Depression Major life event - - loss of a job divorce or 2 weeks or more depending on the situation should be aware of major depression/clinical Major Depression - a mental illness characterized by and ongoing negative feelings. Hopelessness, sadness, or loneliness. Causes for Depression Family history Trauma and stress Physical conditions Other psychological disorders. Symptoms include a decrease interest in previously enjoyed activities extreme tiredness and difficult sleeping difficulty concentrating irritability, anger and hostility recurrent thoughts of death The key difference between depressed moods and serious depression is the length of symptoms. A person may be suffering from depressive symptoms and take drugs in the hope of Depressive may develop as a direct result of taking drugs, or as part of withdrawal symptoms when drug-taking stops. (Low mood in withdrawal may be brief and, but sometimes it can lead to a, prolonged depressive illness.) A person may take drugs to from a problem during a particularly stressful time in their life; this stress may also be the trigger for an episode of depression. A person taking drugs is likely to have more of these, which may trigger depression. Bipolar Disorder - a mental illness characterized by periods of

3 depression closely followed by extreme manic feelings. Manic mentally and physically moods. During the depression phase major symptoms can occur. During the manic mood, little need of sleep, lack of self control binge drinking/ eating,, sexual behavior or out of spending. Schizophrenia - a mental illness characterized by,hallucinations, and irregular though. against them. Threatened against them. OR... emotional reactions such as laughing when then hear somebody has died. Show consistent behavior. Antisocial Personality Disorder - a common mental illness by disregard for social rules, a tendency for behavior, and indifference toward other people. Autism spectrum disorder complex mental disorders. People with ASD typically have a problem with normal interactions. Difficulty communicating and other people's point of views. have difficulty making eye contact fail to respond to verbal attempts

People with ADD have paying attention. Anorexia nervosa - an eating in which a person has intense fear of gaining weight, eats too little, and loses far more than is healthy for his or her height. Bulimia nervosa -an eating in which a person has recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by -. eating disorder - an eating disorder in which a person repeatedly consumes huge amounts of food in a short amount of time. Sometimes people are addicted to a particular substance. Alcohol, nicotine, or other drugs. Sometimes to a behavior. - or using social media.

5 Alcohol and drug addiction also increases the risk of developing certain types of mental disorders. - Depression, anxiety, and paranoia. - Self -injury occurs when people intentionally harm themselves. - Self mutilation or cutting. (most common) - burning, harmful substances (bleach). It's not a mental disorder its addiction. Shows links to and borderline personality disorder. Self injury occurs because people are unable to effectively or control their emotions.
