Metal/Lung & Sadness - The movement of Metal is downwards and inwards as well as outwards; - The Lung has the function of taking in and letting go (image of a fishing net) - The natural emotion (feeling) is. Wistfulness. Sensitivity,. Perception; empathy. Being in touch,. Capacity for introspection. Capacity to let go Wood H. Montakab M.D. 3 East South Fire Earth Water North Metal. Pathos of things ( mono no aware in Japanese): gentle sadness about the reality of life; impermanence West

Pathological Sadness - Normally the Lung brings Qi down, but also distributes to the surface. - When the movement of Metal (downward and outward) is disturbed there is the emotion of Sadness: it is said that Lung produces sadness - Sadness becomes pathological only if:. very intense Grief. lasting for a long time. not properly expressed (retained grief) H. Montakab M.D. 4

Consequences of Sadness & Grief - Excessive or prolonged Sadness (Grief) harms the Lung: => blocks the Qi in the chest (Ying & Wei Qi): shortness of breath; oppression; weak voice, tiredness; => reduced Wei Qi: loss of instinct of preservation => Affects the Heart Qi (deficiency and stagnation; non communication, loss of joy => depression) => Qi stasis in the chest produces Heat (dries fluids but also destroys Yang-Qi - Qi stagnation in the chest may lead to tumours or breast lumps in women - Produces a Short or Weak pulse in both Cun positions H. Montakab M.D. 6

Other consequences of Grief - In women Grief may cause Liv Blood-Xu - Sadness and Grief may affect the Liver and the Hun: => Confusion => Aimlessness and loss of direction in life => Inability to make choices - Unexpressed sadness (loss of joy) may affect the Kidneys (loss of will to live) => suicidal tendencies => disturbed Water metabolism H. Montakab M.D. 7

Oppression You - Is linked to Grief and represents a condition of lack of circulation, of contraction and immobilisation => weakness of Blood & Qi = lack of Yang-Qi - Usually related to Lung => LU-Qi-Xu (shortness of breath, weak cough) - Also often Heart => HE-Qi-Xu with HE-Yin Xu (mental tiredness, palpitations, agitation, insomnia, amnesia) - When oppression affects Sp-St: it disrupts transformation & transportation, causing reduced appetite, bloating, weakness of the four limbs and injury to Yi - When oppression affects the Liver it causes Liv-Qi stasis H.
