1 , pp Effects of an Educational Intervention for the Prevention of Dry Eye Syndrome in Adults Seong-Ran Lee Department of Medical Information, Kongju National University, 56 Gongjudaehak-ro, Kongju, Chungnam, , South Korea, Abstract. This paper is to estimate the effects of an educational intervention for the prevention of dry eye syndrome in adults. The subjects of this paper were 128 patients who had been visited a general hospital which located in Metropolitan area. The pairwise t-test was done to compare the before and after educational effect of eye management in dry eye syndrome patients. As a result of this study, In terms of eye management through the hand acupressure, the mean score(61.38±3.72) after educational intervention significantly increased than mean score(38.74±0.91) before educational intervention(t=-3.94, p=.000). Therefore, systematic adoption of an educational intervention to minimize dry eye syndrome will contribute effectively to the rapid disease recovery and prevention of dry eye disease. Keywords: Educational program, Adoption, Prevention, Dry eye syndrome, Adults 1 Introduction Dry eye syndrome, or dry eye disease, is a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not make enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to the eyes drying out and becoming inflamed, red and swollen and irritated. Dry eye syndrome is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or simply dry eyes[1],[2]. Dry eye syndrome is believed to be one of the most common ocular problems in Korea, particularly among older women. However, there are few studies describing the magnitude of the problem in adult and how this may vary with demographic characteristics. When we first bought a smartphone like the immeasurably, it eliminates the need for numerous features to entertain us. If we use the time to five hours per person per day a smartphone, it leads to a problem. Smartphones are a big part of our lives. But Smartphone in time occurs physically and mentally bad points. We're becoming a slave to the smartphone. In order to solve the urgent problem, we should look for the practical plans. However, there were few studies to deal with effects of the program for the prevention in patients with dry eye syndrome until present. We also don t have any educational program about it[3],[4]. Therefore, the educational program including eye disease is urgently needed to control the increasing prevalence of dry eye syndrome and produce its related desirable outcomes. Thus, this paper attempted to estimate the ISSN: ASTL Copyright 2015 SERSC

2 effects of it on the change of eye health status in dye eye patients for the prevention of dry eye syndrome through an educational intervention. 2 Materials and Methods 2.1 Study Materials Study participants were patients who were treated with dry eye syndrome at least one month ago by ophthalmology of a general hospital in Metropolitan area. The data were collected by interview and self-administered questionnaire. 128 subjects who participated in this study between November 3 and December 26, 2014 were surveyed. 2.2 Study Methods General characteristics of study subjects were measured by percentage and number. The pairwise t-test was done to compare eye management before and after educational intervention. It was also performed to determine the statistically significant differences between the two groups on the satisfaction of an educational intervention for measurement of eye health habits for the prevention of dry eye syndrome. 3 Results 3.1 Comparison of Eye Management Before and After Educational Intervention Table 1 represents comparison of eye management before and after educational intervention. In terms of eye management through the hand acupressure, the mean score(61.38±3.72) after educational intervention significantly increased than mean score(38.74±0.91) before educational intervention(t=-3.94, p=.000). On the other hand, for dietary management, there was a statistically significant difference in practicing the healthy lifestyles of carrot intake after education intervention(t=-4.26, p=.000). For symptoms of dry eye syndrome, the follow-up survey showed a lower rate in the experimental group, regardless of the time elapsed of 40 days after the educational intervention. However, the intervention effect was estimated to increase more rapidly with time elapsed of 60 days after educational intervention in the experimental group as compared to the control group. 122 Copyright 2015 SERSC

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome and healthy lifestyles 4 Discussion The present study conducted to investigate basic data through the effect of a new educational intervention for the prevention of dry eye syndrome by examining the symptom, clinical and dietary management. This attempt of a new educational program was evaluated about a significant improvement of eye management in patients with dry eye syndrome. The intervention effect did not significantly decrease diabetes mellitus in patients with dry eye syndrome. Therefore a multi-displinary approach is required to reduce the factors related to diabetes mellitus. As a result of this study, it showed statistically significantly positive changes of eye management such as eye, foot, hand acupressure and eye movement. Moreover, it had been diminished the symptoms of dry eye syndrome. The findings were similar to previous studies on other eye diseases[2],[3],[5]. This study suggests that individuals with dry eye syndrome should be targeted for specific educational intervention to prevent the progression of dry eye syndrome. Based on the results obtained by the study, it is anticipated that this paper may be used as basic data for developing and interventing eye management for the eye disease patients. However, in order to maintain desirable health behaviors, convergence educational program for dry eye syndrome patients on eye management is more successful than single program. The results of this paper, after receiving intervention, there was a positive change for the eye management after intervention than before intervention in the mean score of healthy lifestyle such as egg intake, eye and foot acupressure. The findings were consistent with the result of earlier research[6],[7]. Therefore, we need to perform an educational intervention for systematic eye management. Copyright 2015 SERSC 123

5 5 Conclusion This paper is to estimate the effects of an educational intervention to promote the healthy lifestyle of eye management in patients with dry eye syndrome in adults. It conducted a positive effect on eye improvement in dry eye syndrome patients. According to this research, systematic adoption of an educational intervention to minimize dry eye syndrome will contribute effectively to the rapid disease recovery and prevention of eye disease. The educational intervention will also give patients much information about practical suggestions for getting more of the eye health that can help prevent dry eye syndrome. References 1.
