Winter 2016 Foot Pain Solutions for Everyday Problems We applaud the many people who have set a goal to walk 10,000 steps a day. But, if each step takes the brunt of 3 to 4 times our body weight, is it any wonder that 75% of us will experience foot health problems during our lifetime? At the Werkman Foot & Orthotic Clinic we provide caring and professional footcare for people of all ages and stages. You may be perfectly healthy, except for that thick and yellow toenail or plantar wart on the bottom of your foot. Have a painful bunion? Perhaps you have trouble cutting your toenails so they don t dig into your skin and hurt like the dickens. Are you a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic? You are in a growing segment of the population, and education is critical to maintaining healthy feet when living with diabetes. Love participating in sports, but hate the pain afterwards? Your qualified and licensed foot health professional, also known as a Chiropodist or Podiatrist, takes care of everyday foot problems and foot pain so you can get on with the business of living! Book your appointment for a consultation/assessment today and together we can stamp out foot pain for good! 1
Put the Win in Winter with Custom Orthotics! Whatever your sport, whether it s walking, running, skating, skiing, hockey or building snowmen, custom orthotics with dynamic cushioning provide comfort and that will help you perform better! Custom orthotics are made especially for YOUR feet. They support or supplement weakened or abnormal joints. Orthotics are custom devices (inserts worn in your shoes, boots, or skates) designed to alleviate the pain and discomfort you may suffer from conditions such as arthritis and joint pain and foot disorders such as fallen arches, heel spurs, bunions, sport injuries, etc. Ouch! Why continue to suffer when there may be an alternative to pain? Speaking of arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation recommends orthotics to relieve pressure on the joints. You can read the article at If you would like to learn more about custom orthotics that will help you put the WIN in winter, book an appointment with us for a consultation. The Werkman Foot & Orthotic Clinic is conveniently located in Oakville on the northwest corner of Maple Grove and Cornwall. You and your team will be happy you did. Cheers to winter! What has 12 feet and sticks on ice? (a hockey team) 2
Diagnosed with Diabetes? You Need Special Footcare! Avoid complications from diabetes! Find specialized diabetic footcare, wound care and learn more about the disease. Education is vital in order to avoid complications. Diabetic patients must pay attention to their feet as problems may occur as a result of either circulation or nerve changes. Learn more about living with diabetes. Here are some foot complications that diabetic patients may encounter and some possible treatment options that are available from your Chiropodist/Podiatrist. Callus This is an area of thickened skin where excessive pressure and friction exists due to abnormal biomechanics. If left untreated these lesions may bleed under the skin causing tissue breakdown, and possible infection. Treatment consists of simple debridement of the callus and pressure relieving padding or insoles/orthotics to address biomechanical abnormalities. Corns Unlike callus that is diffuse, corns are an excessive skin buildup in a localized area usually with a hard central core. Some possible causes are abnormal foot biomechanics and improper footwear. Management includes simple debridement and deflective padding or insoles/orthotics to address any biomechanical problems. Ingrown Toenails This occurs when a spike from the side of the nail starts to grow into the surrounding skin. This usually results from improper nail cutting or tight footwear. Treatment options include footwear education, reshaping the nail or nail surgery procedures for permanent resolution of persistent ingrown nails. Tell your physician, general practitioner or health care provider the office of J. Richard Werkman in Oakville provides professional diabetic footcare along with treatment and surgery for ingrown toenails. 3
Ulcers Are open wounds due to circulation problems, lack of sensation, or pressure. Management consists of evaluation, debridement, and appropriate dressings, deflective padding or orthotics may be necessary. Any of the above conditions, if left untreated, may result in serious complications requiring more aggressive therapies and/or hospitalization. If you are living with Diabetes, you are special! Make an appointment for specialized diabetic footcare and education from a Chiropodist/Podiatrist in your area today. A doctor s referral is not required to see a Chiropodist/Podiatrist. Make your appointment today or call Painful Ingrown Toenails? Is there anything worse than the pain caused by an ingrown toenail? We don t think so. Shooting pain caused by pressure placed on the surrounding nerves, reminds you with every step you take, that your toe is not happy or healthy! Ingrown toenails develop when the edge of the toenail is driven into the toe by shoes (or boots) that are too tight. Ingrown toenails occur most frequently alongside the big toe. The nail cuts into the side of the toe, creating a shooting pain as it puts pressure on the nerves. Ingrown toenails may also be caused by injury, fungal infection, psoriasis, heredity, or poor foot structure. Here is what an ingrown toenail looks like at first (left); and then as the condition progresses (right): 4
Ingrown Toenail initially Ingrown Toenail as it progresses Rather than waiting and hoping for the condition to resolve on its own, we suggest that you contact us at the Oakville Foot & Orthotic Clinic and make an appointment with Rick Werkman, a Registered Chiropodist, Licensed for Nail Surgery and Local Anesthesia. You do not need a doctor s referral to consult with a Registered Chiropodist regarding Ingrown Nail Surgery, Local Anesthesia, or Injections for the relief of heel pain, bursitis, metatarsalgia, and/or Morton s neuroma. Please contact our office today to book your appointment. You may want to check your Third Party/Extended Health Care Plan as you may be covered for our services. We want you to get back to the business of living and leave foot pain behind! Is Ugly Nail Fungus Ruining Your Day? Talking about nail fungus probably isn t high on the list of topics to discuss over dinner with family or friends. Unfortunately, toenail fungus is a reality; and it can be an embarrassing condition, especially when you d like to wear open toed shoes or sandals that is, until you look down. There is an answer to fungal nails. It s here at the Werkman Foot & Orthotic Clinic in Oakville. The Noveon Nailaser is the safest and most effective laser treatment option for nails available today. The laser kills fungus using certain light wavelengths that are known to disrupt the metabolism of fungal cells. Once their metabolism has been altered, the fungal cells die. Meanwhile, healthy skin and tissue cells are left unharmed. 5
Before Noveon NaiLaser Nail Laser Treatment for Fungal Nail After series of Noveon NaiLaser Nail Laser Treatment for Fungal Nail The Noveon Nailaser includes several features to ensure effective toenail fungus treatment: Light, not heat While most toenail fungus lasers use designs that can cause pain and may not kill the fungus, scientists have identified two laser wavelengths that are particularly effective at destroying fungus cells without producing high levels of heat. The Noveon NaiLaser uses both. Automatic operation A computer program controls the operation of the Noveon NaiLaser. This increases treatment effectiveness and reduces the possibility of heat buildup. Patient guards & control Instead of a hand-held wand, the Noveon NaiLaser uses laser pathways connected to patient guards treating up to four toes at a single time. A patient can instantly stop treatment with a pause switch. Make every day a great bare toe day! Show us your fungal nail and we ll show you how to get rid of it for good! Contact us today. What would you get if you crossed a centipede with a parrot? (a walkie-talkie) 6
Thanks from McMaster Children s Hospital Families Together with our patients at Werkman Foot & Orthotic Clinic, we were able to raise approximately $200 for the Ronald McDonald Family Room located in McMaster Children s Hospital. With these funds, we were able to purchase much needed supplies, fresh fruit and treats for the families to enjoy while visiting the room. The Family room volunteers were very enthusiastic to receive fresh fruit as it is always in high demand! The Ronald McDonald Family room is a great place for parents and family members of sick children to recharge, either by grabbing a quick coffee and snack or providing a space to just relax on a couch.
