Description: The research objective of this dissertation grant is to understand the effects of poor medication adherence on intermediate outcomes of blood pressure and cholesterol and long term outcomes of stroke and heart attack over the course of a patient s lifetime. A Markov decision process model will be developed to determine the optimal (or near optimal) time to initiate blood pressure and 2

3 cholesterol medications given uncertainty about the patient s future health status and adherence to medication.
